Would like to find out so that we may be able to have a much needed holiday, school just say they will be sending a letter out!

Dds last exam is the 12th and she doesnt need to go in after that.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2014 17:40

Ds1 only in Yr10, but i thought they 'left' last week then went back in just for exams then after the last exam don't go back in at all. Unless there's something i don't know.

headlesslambrini · 18/05/2014 17:42

No the official legal school leaving date is the last friday in June each year. You will be safe to book a holiday in early July.

LIZS · 18/05/2014 17:44

ds has a book return day/6th form induction on 17th. "Leavers Day" was week before last and prom on 20th June. They only pass official school leaving age on the last Friday of June though.

KatyMac · 18/05/2014 17:45

Ours are expected to stay until the end of July (normal end of term) as they can no longer leave school at 16.....how they are going to enforce that?

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2014 17:45

I left school at 15 in that case. Shock

LIZS · 18/05/2014 17:47

yes dd will too. Mind you it is only a nominal date now . They have to be in some form of employment or training, or remain at school longer.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 17:47

I thought that technically they remain a student till the end of August but that a lot of schools don't make them come back for lessons after their gcses.

I mean what would be the point in having a history lesson if they're off to college to do something totally unrelated.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/05/2014 17:48

I also left school at 15. Grin

Nocomet · 18/05/2014 17:49

Some six forms start before the summer, but generally everyone assumes that after their last exam that's it.

The world won't end if they suddenly have an sixform induction day. Lots of DCs don't decide until results day where they are going.

Book holiday, enjoy. It's far to late for school to think up some daft idea now. Lots of people will already have plans.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2014 17:50

I had a full time job by the time I was 16.3. I look at my DS1 who is nearly 15 and think Shock
I also think I wish he knew what he wanted to do beyond June 2015

KatyMac · 18/05/2014 17:52

Ours are having days about college, & finance, & studying, & careers, & stuff - so I have arranged 2 weeks work experience for DD as her future is significantly different to the others

offtoseethewizard64 · 18/05/2014 20:53

DS finished half way through May last year and only went in for exams. His last exam was 21st June iirc and he didn't go in again after that. This yrs Yr 11s at his school are doing the same.

triplets · 18/05/2014 22:42

You would think by now thy would let us know wouldn`t you? My trio all have their last gcse on the 16th June. My dh got an all clear ct for cancer last week and we would love to get away. We haven't flown for 6 years since the diagnosis. Because he has been in remission for 2 years now we can get travel insurance at a more reasonable price. I have looked at holidays based on going in Aug and was Shock at the cost, so to get away a little earlier would really help. Thanks everyone. :)

All the schools round here they leave after their last exam.

At dds school however they have to stay until mid July & the school dance show.

Nocomet · 19/05/2014 08:24

Triplets, great news about your DH. Honestly just book something and go.

Schools need to respect families have a life, beyond their control freak tendencies. You have a really ligitimate reason for being away. Go!

EdithWeston · 19/05/2014 08:50

I think you should go on the holiday.

Our secondary has one leavers day when all are expected back in (return text books, assembly, awards, etc) but I think that's it. Pupils do like to be there for the grand farewell.

Could you ask the school if they do similar? If they do, then you know what you might choose to work around.

TheWordFactory · 19/05/2014 09:00

I think at DD's school they don't have to go in except for certain things; founders day being non negotiable - which is a pain as I would have loved to have buggered off with my two after the exams and not return until results day.

eatyourveg · 19/05/2014 09:13

ds finishes on the 12th but has to be back in for speech day at the end of term

smokepole · 19/05/2014 22:18

It beats the "don't darken our doors again" approach that happened when I left school in 1990 ! ."Off you go" , don't come back was all I heard, nothing nice like a Prom , or even any future guidance. Its refreshing that kids can either say goodbye , or be "gently " introduced to A levels in a civilised manner.

HSMMaCM · 20/05/2014 08:01

Our school said they don't want to see the children in July, so we will be taking DD on holiday when she's only 15.

KatyMac · 20/05/2014 08:32

I just had a letter "college, & finance, & studying, & careers, & stuff" has turned into Alton Towers, the beach, shopping & a bbq & go away after the 27th June

The question is after begging for me to organise work experience for those last two week, will she try & wriggle out of it

mumthetaxidriver · 20/05/2014 21:49

I am very surprised that you have not been given end of term details for your Yr 11 children. My DS has leavers assembly this Friday - and will be in school only for exams after half term. Then it is just the Prom on Friday 27th (optional but most will attend). My DS is moving to a Sixth Form College so will attend an open day in June/July - so apart from Results Day that's it for the summer Smile

mumthetaxidriver · 20/05/2014 21:53

PS so book your holiday and have a fab holiday - it sounds like you all deserve it!
