Teenagers

teen slang (especially used by girls)

hi there, i'm a script writer currently working on a screenplay with teenage girls in but I'm aware that me teen slang is a bit out of touch!! (i'm 36 and my son is 2 so not quite there yet in picking up the lingo).

i've looked at some of the teen slang threads - very funny! but would love to hear more about current teen slang from mums of teen girls especially - particularly what 2013 equivalents of words like 'shagging' and 'up the duff' might be - both feel too 90s (when i was a teen ha!)

Any help much appreciated.

DN - 17 uses:

Got on - snogging, got of with
Climbed on - the whole hog Confused
Awkward - (for anything, all the sodding time!)
Mighty Fire - cover up for a serious swear word (she got this from me Blush
lolage - anything funny
ledge - as superior cat said

and when I.Ming or FB - putting a full stop at the end of anything followed by a x means "You are an div and not worth my time as you are beneath me. x "

Oh and div - but that's kind of unviersal down here.

Throw in the words 'literally' and 'basically' in every sentence, usually used out of context.

oh I forgot blud and random -

e.g.

Calls DN

DN - Aaaaryyygh blud
Me - quit it DN
DN - Woah, Random much!
Me - Just answer the phone properly mun
DN - Lolage
Me - Sod it, I'll text you.

And text speak it out, unless you want to be considered "from the 'port" - chavy closest town....

Am I right in thinking this stuff is regional though? I think to be authentic, it can't all be jumbled up. I heard 'blud' a lot in east London but not at all out in the sticks in Buckinghamshire.

Ds1 says blud. We're in Manchester.

Loads of these as well. Any Jamaican word regardless of your colour. I'll try to remember examples.

ha we are in rural kent, and blud is in common use here! also 'mon' instead of man.

also babe, as in thank you how nice = "aw, thanks babe"

monkeyslut, melonfucker and slore (slut+whore) are terms of affection apprently. but obviously not 12A suitable!!

I do pick them up on the gangsta thing, but actually I find it really funny, and have been known to call them monkeysluts or melonfuckers myself.

Someone can be a 'tank' too - 'he's a tank'.

Screwing at someone = having a go/shouting at someone.

Wounded = sarcastically saying bad luck or a shame

Oh and on facebook, it seems they have moved on from multiplying the number of vowels in a word to shortening it and adding a z on the end, so baby which became baaaaaabaaaaaiiiiii has become babez

Oh this is brilliant everyone. Have been hooting with laughter at some if these comments. My film isn't really set anywhere specific - it's a comedy & kind of a heightened reality so we're not going uber realistic with the speech but it'll be great to get some of these things youve suggested in. Definitely some likes, randoms, awkwards and I love YOLO. Teen speak has certainly changed since my day! Thanks so much for all your help.

Aren't teenagers great? Not to mention a species in their own right!

Report
Ilovemyrabbits · 15/08/2013 16:56

In South Yorkshire, I've noticed my 12 yo dd's friend says someone is being 'tight' when they are being mean or horrible. And she'll say, 'that was so tight' if something happens that she didn't agree with or didn't think was right. I tried to use it to dd and she looked at me with such horror, I laughed, said I clearly didn't understand all this young person's vernacular and made a mental note never to use it again!

You got owned = somebody got one over you/showed you up/made a fool of you kind of thing.

on your Jaffa = as in Jaffa cake = means to be on your own

I so ship them = I think X and Y should in a relationship together

Report
Knotter · 16/08/2013 15:48

Yes - had to look up 'shipping' after watching a programme yesterday about fans of One Direction (don't ask) - wanting 2 people to get together in a relationship.

Also bromance - affection between 2 straight males.
