She wants to get the top of her her done. She's had her ears done since she was in yr 6.I think she's too young for top of ears but she says it's nothing to do with me.

I've said wait until your older,am I being an unreasonable mum?

I did my own at that age!
Then it went yucky and infected.

brimfull · 05/03/2006 14:31

ouch! you did the top of your ear?

don't think she'd have the guts to do that tbh.

littlerach · 05/03/2006 14:38

yes, with ice and a needle, then a piercing stud Blush.

I only kept it in about a week, it really hurt, and in bed I couldn't lie on that side!

A friend of mine at school did her own nose - wasn't that brave!!

brimfull · 05/03/2006 14:52

did you do it yourself because your parents wouldn't let you get it done?.....you nutter!

tweeni · 05/03/2006 15:22

Marne · 05/03/2006 17:13

I had my first tatoo when i was 14, my mum was not pleased, at least earrings can be taken out.

a bit unreasonable, it's hardly a facial tattoo is it?! she's at the age where she'll go off and do it herself anyway so you might as well agree and make sure she keeps it clean and doen't let it get infected.

brimfull · 05/03/2006 17:50

I still think she should wait until she's older.

Maybe I'll chnage my mind ,but at the mo I'm sticking to my guns.

I don't think you are being hard or unreasonable at all, my Mum wouldn't allow me to get the bottom of my ears done untill I was 16 and I am soooo glad if I had done them earlier I would probably have wanted other things done like your daughter and then would have regretted them for ever.

stitch · 05/03/2006 18:03

yes i think you are being unreasonable.
better to take her to a proper, hygienic place, and help her keep it clean etc than to have her friend do it with ice and a needle.

brimfull · 05/03/2006 18:08

I really don't think she'd get a friend to do it though. She's a wimp at the best of times.

Will ask her though .

I don't think you're being unreasonable. My dd is not allowed to get the bottoms of her ears pierced until she is 16. Now I accept that might be unreasonable, but she's having to live with it - and funnily enough, hasn't nagged for the last couple of years.

brimfull · 05/03/2006 18:33

Yes fairyjay I suspect this will be forgotten soon.

OP posts:
Pollyanna · 05/03/2006 18:42

why don't you suggest that she waits until she is say, 15, and if she still wants it done then you take her somewhere reputable to get it done. She might have forgotten about it by then.

Yorkiegirl · 05/03/2006 18:46

I had mine done at 19 when I was at uni. Was horrid, got infected loads.
Have just put a hoop back in it now, it was sore for a couple of days but is fine now.
If she must have it done, she should wear a hoop in it as certainly for me a stud made it get yacky all the time.

lanismum · 05/03/2006 19:13

id let her get it done, but id make sure she knew its really sore for a couple of weeks after, sleeping on it and brushing your hair can really hurt, id also make sure she got it done with a needle in a proper piercing shop rather than with a gun in a chemist, guns are very bad for this type of piercing.

egocentriczebra · 05/03/2006 19:22

agree with stitch, but I'd use it as a reward/leverage for some other good behavior in return ("first you have to show you're responsible by keeping your room tidy for 2 weeks first," that kind of thing).

Wonder if that makes me evil mum....? :)

misdee · 05/03/2006 19:25

tbh, this sort of piecring is a bit awful to have done. i have attempted to have mine done several times, but each time it goes yuk and i have to remove it. it catches when you brush your hair, when you try and sleep etc. it needs to be done properly and not with a gun as that can shatter the cartlidge and cause more problems.

Greensleeves · 05/03/2006 19:56

no, I wouldn't let her.

starlover · 05/03/2006 20:01

at 14 yes, i would let her.

my mum wouldn't let me have mine done so i went and had it done anyway!
i still love it...

starlover · 05/03/2006 20:02

it's no worse than ordinary ear piercings IMO

even my mum admitted it was much nicer than she thought it'd be
