Ds, 17, has been brought home drunk by his friends - any tips to get him safely through the night?

He's just sleeping at the moment. Apparently he has been sick a couple of times. I feel surprisingly ignorant of what to do. His female friends are being very concerned and solicitous.

lay him on his side in the recovery position so he can't choke.

get him a pint of water, a carrier bag to be sick into

and go to bed.

in the mornign call him a nob head

It's good that his friends made sure he got home safe. Let him sleep it off. If he will drink water then he should. Maybe give him some headache tablets as well. He will likely have a headache and feel awful in the morning. Natural consequence.

Get him in bed, on his side, bucket by bed. If you can get a pint of water down him great, if not just put one by the side of the bed for during the night. In the morning be ready with a banana (replaces potassium), water and paracetamol. Also be ready to call him a plonker.

Recovery position is very very important. Get a load of unwashed towels/sheets from the laundry basket under him.

How drunk was he ? Could he walk and manage speaking ? Can you wake him ok ? Do they know how much he drank ? My mum use to remove my brother clothes to his boxers , lay him in the recovery position , and put a bucket and bottle of water near by , checking on him a few times . But that was when he was just very very drunk , and not needing his stomach pumped .

If MN ever do a book about teenagers this should be quoted.

If he's been sick a couple of times he will be fine.....you may feel the need to do the hoovering at 8am.

oh god we've had this at various teen ages (including A&E once )

what everybody else has said, pretty much - but if he's awake enough at any point, see if you can get some sugar water down him (as recommended by the sister at A&E when one of mine was admitted - it speeds recovery apparently)

kids, eh?

TBH at the moment we're leaving him in a room at our house with his friends being very solicitous. They are watching him breathe. He has a bucket etc. When we kick them out we'll try to get him to talk and drink a pint of water.

well do put some sugar in the water - the lovely sister at A&E when DS was on a drip gave him 2 bags of saline & then one of glucose (she'd been there herself, bless her)

Are you sure he's just sleeping and not unconscious? Could he walk without collapsing? If not he should probably get to A&E. They won't stomach pump him if he's already been sick several times but a friend's son in this state was kept under observation a few hours and offered a drip as he was so dehydrated.

Yes, I am taking it seriously. We are trying not to be hysterical overreacting parents but in a few minutes we will get him in, give him sugar water and make him say something. I intend to sleep by him so I wake up if he vomits on me.

Sounds like a night or two I may have had with DD1

Lots of water, bucket, as Custy sensibly suggested, calls of knobhead in the morning. And remember that very noisy DIY that needed doing - do it. At 7am. It's worth it. I promise.

I've just had ten seventeen year olds to stay for the week. There's a slight chance they may have had a little too much to drink on the odd occasion.

Dioralyte is brilliant at kicking hangovers into touch, especially coupled with 2 nurofen plus.

It seems rather unfair that he should get the benefit of my miracle cure at such a young age, let him suffer tomorrow and by 3.30 in the afternoon he'll start to feel better.

We got him to say Yes. And to drink a glass of water. Suddenly I have a novel that urgently needs reading; I will have to sit up and read it tonight. At least until I'm a bit more confident that all's well. He will get more water shoved down him if I have my way too.

Thanks for all advice. Will prepare nobhead speeches for the morning.
