ds went off to university yesterday - and I cried myself to sleep! All the organising and packing and "serious talks" about budgeting, studying, making friends - and it's only just hit me that we will never have quite the same relationship again. I am such a wimp!

Well, it's been over a month and by all accounts all is well. We've had (almost) weekly phone calls, several requests for stuff to be posted asap and even a letter from ds to his grandad! But today is ds's birthday and I've always seen him on his birthday before. It's made me feel a bit weepy again. Better open the red wine and drink a toast to him!

ds1 came home day before dd born, the day dd born (i came out of hospital same day)he went and stayed the night at girlfriends!! "You don't mind, do you mum?".

Am i only wicked mum, who breathes a sigh of relief when he goes back to uni!!

ThePrisoner · 01/11/2005 19:06

No, tartan, I love my dds dearly but the house is so much more peaceful with less of them here! I have a friend who falls to pieces whenever her son returns to uni after having a weekend at home! I have a bit of a "I'm a bad mother" thought, then get back to the real world, and realise I should be pleased that they're grown-up enough not to need mollycoddling!!

what i don't understand is, he is only home for a few days and household items such as sellotape, plasters(?), hairspray,tv guide and several plates suddenly appear in his bedroom.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I feel the same as you prisone, that i've done my job as a mum properly, as he is a self sufficient, confident, popular happy young man!!

Who happens to be a bit selfish at the moment!!

Was at a heavy-duty meeting this evening. Dd had rung home to talk to me and was told (I found out later) that I was at meeting. She rang my mobile, which was thankfully on "silent".

"Oh no!" thinks I, "dd is ringing me and it must be urgent" ... but I rejected her call and quickly sent text to ask her to text back. I was somewhat worried.

How silly of me!! Despite the fact that she was told I was out, she was hoping that I'd tape tonight's episode of "Lost" for her friend.
