I'm considering getting a kindle because I want to read in bed without my phone. At the moment I read on my Kindle app on phone but I don't want to take my phone into bed anymore.

So will I be able to read the same book on my phone and kindle...will it keep my place? Will my kindle need internet all the time?

I prefer reading on a device because I can change the font to a dyslexia one.

Thanks

Get the Paperwhite one,it's great. Yes it keeps your place between devices. Yes you need wifi. It's lovely to read in bed 😊

They are really great gadgets.

You need WiFi or 3/4G (depending g on model) to download new books but once they’re on the device you don’t need them to be permanently connected to read. Hence you can use them on planes.

Exactly, mine is brilliant

You'll just need an internet connection so the Kindle can sync the latest page read, that way your phone can retrieve it and vice versa. Does not need always-on internet.

LeafyGreenSummer · 24/05/2023 22:22

I sending all the above, but I have recently upgraded to a Kindle Scribe (after about 10 years with a really old one!), and I love the bigger size screen.

You only need WiFi to download books and do system updates. Then you’re good to read anywhere and the battery life lasts for months.

The standard size Paperwhite is brilliant too, and much more portable.

strawberriesarenot · 24/05/2023 22:24

The huge drawback is that you can't use them for library books. I was a bit disappointed when I realised this.

CountTessa · 24/05/2023 22:26

I have downgraded from the paperwhite to bog standard as mine died. Standard one now has inbuilt light like the paperwhite.

It will sync with your phone

They are great and very portable.

That's why I chose the kobo, compatible with Overdrive and Libby. I don't know how the reading experience compares though, I've never had a kindle.

stringbean · 24/05/2023 22:40

I have the Kobo equivalent of a backlit Kindle - you can download library books and are not tied to buying them from Amazon.

stringbean · 24/05/2023 22:41

I compared them side by side before buying and just preferred the Kobo - hadn't realised about the library books beforehand, which was an added bonus.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 24/05/2023 23:24

**sorry, as others have said, you need wifi to down load the books but that's it 😊

AnotherEmma · 24/05/2023 23:34

Get a Kobo so you can read library ebooks on it.
I have an ancient Kindle but really want a Kobo for that reason.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2023 23:36

They are brilliant.

I love mine for helping me to detach from my phone, plus I travel a lot so books aren’t as practical.

determinedtomakethiswork · 24/05/2023 23:41

I use the kindle fire, and I access my library books on it. I haven't paid for a book for years! If you get a paperwhite, then you will either have to pay for individual books or kindle unlimited, where you pay monthly and have access to a certain range of books.

I use my kindle for library books! It’s the online library app called “Libby”. It’s brilliant! I wonder if this is a USA thing, though, and not available in the UK? I apologise in advance if that’s the case - it would be nice if you had it over there, too.

the libraries have websites and you can get an online library card; there may be a small fee if you’re not local to the library, but really minimal.

barmycatmum · 24/05/2023 23:56

if anyone has the new kindle that one can also write on, please let us know what you think?

I’m considering an upgrade.

wwyd2021medicine · 25/05/2023 00:03

Someone said to me today that they were going to the library to sign up for their kindle library which has 'a good selection of books' apparently so it may depend on area?

LovelyJublee · 25/05/2023 00:32

Most of my book on my kindle are not purchased from amazon. I just send epubs purchased elsewhere to my kindle from my phone. Dh does the same with his.

I love my kindle and it's something I thought I'd not like because I usually prefer a physical book but I get through so much more on the kindle.

LovelyJublee · 25/05/2023 00:33

Should also add I have the paperwhite one.

icclemunchy · 25/05/2023 02:07

I adore my paperwhite. I read an average of a book a day mostly Indi published stuff from KU (which makes my subscription more than worth it)

More and more Indi authors are going wide so I'll be considering a kobo when I need an upgrade but it won't be for a while

sjpkgp1 · 25/05/2023 03:42

The best things about the Kindle ( I have the paperwhite one, and I think it was about £100) is for travel, you download books in advance, and it doesn't matter then if you have wifi or not. It is lighter and less bulky than one book, so if you are going away for a while, or you like to flick between books. You can read it in a hotel room without disturbing your partner with lights etc. and they are pretty hardy. The battery lasts for ages (at least two weeks with an average night time read of an hour or so) You can get books for free if you are on prime (they are not the best necessarily, but I will read any old crap - I do it to help me get to sleep). They are far better than reading on a phone, no distractions etc. On the downside, if you forget to download books the wifi thing is sometimes a bit iffy abroad, and I sometimes think the user interface is a bit basic, and I find myself stuck at the end of a book, but that's on me, not them.

lakesummer · 25/05/2023 03:48

I also have a kindle option on the Libby app which is how I borrow library books.

Can you use Libby in the Uk?

Correct - you can use Libby with Kindle in the US but not in the U.K.

I have the waterproof one so I can read it in the bath. If you get one you can sign up for daily emails via bookhub that tell you which books are on 99p offers.
