I'm considering getting a kindle because I want to read in bed without my phone. At the moment I read on my Kindle app on phone but I don't want to take my phone into bed anymore.

So will I be able to read the same book on my phone and kindle...will it keep my place? Will my kindle need internet all the time?

I prefer reading on a device because I can change the font to a dyslexia one.

Thanks

Having been. Kindle reader for years I think I might opt to getting a Kobo so I can read library books. But I g books gets expensive.

Another vote for the paperwhite from me - I use it every night to read in bed and it won’t keep you awake like a phone backlight. No library books but I just look up which books are on the £1 deal each month.

Brumbies · 25/05/2023 08:10

How does a Kobo work with the library books?

CocoPlum · 25/05/2023 08:11

You need wifi to download and to sync books but it doesn't have to be on all the time. I have the basic non backlit one and I love it. One year I was on a beach in Portugal and saw on FB that a book by an author I loved was 99p that day - there was WiFi at the beach bar so I immediately bought and downloaded it and was reading within 5 minutes!

I keep a wishlist on amazon of kindle books I want to read and check it at the beginning of every month when they change the monthly deals 😁

newtb · 25/05/2023 08:42

My first one had built-in wifi so I could download anywhere, as did my first paperwhite. It's replacement doesn't, and I feel a bit cheated.

newtb · 25/05/2023 08:43

Aaargh its

Footle · 25/05/2023 09:46

@newtb , sympathy for your apostrophe pain

We have Libby app in the uk for downloading library books but cannot use it on kindle. It just means that if I am reading a library book I have to do so on my phone/iPad which I tend to do anyway.

I love my paperwhite though. Bought it to read on holiday in the sunshine which is impossible to do on an ithing. Battery lasts for ages.

What sort of screen does the kobo have? Is it possible to read it in bright sunlight too?

countrygirl99 · 25/05/2023 11:27

Re the cost of books- sign up for Bookbub and you get a daily update on deals. You choose the genres you are interested in. I rarely pay more than 1.99 unless there is a book I really want right now that isn't on offer. I generally have 20-30 lined up waiting to be read.

Most of my book on my kindle are not purchased from amazon. I just send epubs purchased elsewhere to my kindle from my phone. Dh does the same with his.

I love my kindle and it's something I thought I'd not like because I usually prefer a physical book but I get through so much more on the kindle.

How do you do this? As in where do you download epubs and how do you send them to your ereader?

I have a Kindle but was going to change to kobo...

cafecreme · 25/05/2023 11:52

I’m thinking of buying a new kindle for dd as a post gcse gift and taking her old one for myself. Will she still have access to the many books she’s already downloaded on the new one?

Thanks in advance kindle people

beguilingeyes · 25/05/2023 12:03

Your Kindle books are stored on your Amazon account so will automatically transfer to a new device.
If you're just dipping your tor in it's worth looking on Ebay. People sell them when they upgrade and you can get a Paperwhite for very little money (£30 or so)

I have a very old kindle paperwhite that has been brilliant and it's great for reading in bed without disturbing your partner as you don't need a bedside light on. However, the kindle battery isn't what it used to be, so I've now bought a Kobo Libra 2 as I wanted to download library books, which I do via Libby.

In the U.K. you cannot download books from libraries to a kindle, except to the kindle fire tablet, but I prefer the kindle paperwhite or kobo e-readers because they are like reading a paper book and are much easier on the eyes, reading my tablet for too long gives me eye strain, but the kindle paperwhite and kobo don't. They are both brilliant e-readers Op, if you want to access UK libraries then you need a Kobo, if you are not bothered about borrowing books, then the new kindle paperwhite is supposed to be excellent.

janeinthewild · 25/05/2023 12:36

It's great but don't get a backlit one

How does a Kobo work with the library books?

Libby is a reading app created by OverDrive. The Kobo e-readers come with the Overdrive feature built in. When you sign in to your OverDrive account on your Kobo eReader, the content in your Libby account automatically appears on your Kobo eReader.

With OverDrive on your Kobo eReader, all you need is a library card and a Wi Fi connection to borrow eBooks from your public library. Browse, borrow, and place holds on library books directly from your eReader.

I also have the Libby app on my iPad and phone so I can access my local library and download from those as well as from my Kobo. But I don't like reading for any length of time on my phone or iPad, I much prefer my Kobo as I can alter the light depending on how dark it is, I can read it in sunlight and it doesn't strain my eyes.

Brumbies · 27/05/2023 13:21

Does the Kobo have 3G and wifi? Which is the best one to buy?

Brumbies · 27/05/2023 13:28

Thanks so none have 3G or wifi.

tribpot · 27/05/2023 13:30

I don't think there's a massive need for this feature these days? You either connect the device to wifi where you are, or you hotspot off your phone.

AnotherEmma · 27/05/2023 13:37

Brumbies · 27/05/2023 13:28

Eh? They have Wifi, not 3G. The Sage and Libra 2 have Bluebooth.

Why would you need 3G? In the unlikely event you need to connect your e-reader to the internet when you don't have access to wifi, could you not just use your smartphone as a personal hotspot and connect it that way?

AnotherEmma · 27/05/2023 13:40

@Brumbies
Here are the tech specs for the Libra 2, which is the one i want.

I'm used to downloading off grid (camping) via 3G but if I can connect to my phones hotspot I guess it's the same.

LovelyJublee · 27/05/2023 19:58

How do you do this? As in where do you download epubs and how do you send them to your ereader?

There's websites such as ebooks.com where you can buy ebooks, or there's websites that host free ones, I don't know if it's legit and above board so I won't list those sites but Reddit should have a sub.

You need to be logged into the kindle app for this method to work, once the epub file is on my phone in my files, I go to it, tap the share button and then select the kindle icon (I tried to add a screenshot but MN app is not letting me select it) and it sends it to the kindle library. That's by far the easiest way.

There's another way, your kindle has its own email address and you can send files to it via email attachment, however, you need to add the email address you'll be sending from to your kindle email address whitelist, instructions on how to do that are here.

if anyone has the new kindle that one can also write on, please let us know what you think?

I’m considering an upgrade.

I have that one, the Kindle Scribe. I got it a couple of months ago, and only because I wanted something I could use for presentations and not have to print reams of paper.
I like the increased size for reading - the screen is about the size of a hardback book. It's backlit like a paperwhite and battery only needs charging once a month or so. It's heavier, obviously, so not one to pop in your handbag. I don't use the writing function, to be honest. It's very clever, the way it works, but I just prefer actual A4 paper if I'm taking notes.

If I hadn't bought it as a tool for my work, I probably would have stuck to the ancient Kindle I've had forever.
