I've lost my hamster!

I'm actually so distressed, he's a little black and white Syrian. So tame and I let him out for a run about in the kitchen. I blocked up under the dishwasher but he's found away. He's now lost under the house! I could see him earlier and now I can't

Put the cage on the floor with some food in. Hopefully he'll go home after his adventure and want to sleep it off.

Choosingtochange · 26/01/2022 23:12

I've put treats all the way to his cage and put it in the kitchen...has anyone else's hamster found their way back?

Put food down for him near every opening in the kitchen.

Our daughters Syrian, years ago, used to escape and wander but always came back for food.

Afraid you’ll just need to sit and wait.

I've done that. I can't hear him anymore. He went under the dishwasher and think he's under the house now. God

He'll come back out again but it may be when you're asleep. Put a bucket out with food in, make steps up to it using books. Hopefully you will come down to find him sitting in the bucket - it worked for us!

Annabelle69 · 27/01/2022 11:54

You need to leave some strong smelling food near his suspected exit (cheese if he likes that, my Gerbils do). Then a tiny breadcrumb trail (not too much) to the Bucket trick. As above from @Nobledeedsandhotbaths. Have a bucket tilted at an angle with a way for him to enter it, but then be unable to get out again.

Just leaving food in the house won't help if he can just disappear again without being trapped.

Good luck. It's very distressing.

Years ago we were on a night out when the baby sitter rang us distraught that the hamster had escaped. We thought we had seen the last of him but kept his cage out. Exactly 6 days later we came down one morning and he was in his cage! He had his adventure and returned!
Dont give up hope yet.

Auntieobem · 27/01/2022 12:00

One of ours did exactly the same thing. Emerged into the kitchen a few days later, a bit dusty/cobwebby but none the worse for her adventure. Fingers crossed 🤞

SmolCat · 27/01/2022 12:13

They’re a bit like cats: will wonder off for a while and then come back for food and familiar surroundings. He’s busy having a sniffing adventure at the moment but I bet he’ll be back, try not to worry.

Whilst doing some work on our house years ago, one of our hamsters managed to get into the cavity wall. We knocked numerous holes in walls, removed floorboards etc, and we caught a glimpse of him now and again. In the end, we left his cage open, and a piece of cucumber outside the door and we went to bed.

The following morning he was back in his little house, curled up fast asleep!

I really do hope you find him. 🤞

We lost one of ours for 48 hours once, he turned up happy as anything behind the bookcase. I like the idea of the bucket trap! Going to save that for next time...

Santahasjoinedww · 28/01/2022 09:42

Any news op?

Abraxan · 28/01/2022 09:49

Ours escaped a couple of ti Ed.

We did as suggested - cage open and on floor so easily accessible. Trails of foods / thing it was sunflower seeds ours liked as a treat.

Eventually returned several hours later, having 'eaten' it's way through a huge pile of spare duvets and pillows and bedding first!

Rewritethestars1 · 28/01/2022 09:52

Just waiting for him to come back to his cage. They normally do. Unless you have a cat obviously then you will need to lock the cat away.

Rewritethestars1 · 28/01/2022 09:53

Wait

Choosingtochange · 28/01/2022 14:38

Nope nothing. I've left the cage where he got out and the ladder leading up to his open door. Left his food out and a trail of other bits of fruit and veg. I'm not hopeful anymore. Thank you for all your advice though. I'm going to leave it all there another few days.

Another one who lost a hamster and found it again. We knew he was alive because the food we left out was disappearing and we eventually found him because my DF had an electric shock when he picked up a small lamp.
The hamster was behind the cupboard the lamp was on and had made a nice little nest from bits of plastic chewed off the cable and some carpet fluff he'd scraped up for himself.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 28/01/2022 14:45

Mine managed to escape his cage while a cat was in the apartment. Looked everywhere. Thought he was dinner, but held out hope.

In the evening I put his running wheel outside the cage on the floor and turned the lights off.

Heard the wheel spin a few minutes later. Must have been hiding behind a block of massive furniture I couldn't move when searching.

GeidiPrimes · 28/01/2022 14:52

You need a humane rodent trap, baited with favourite food.

MrsSkylerWhite · 28/01/2022 21:27

Peanut butter did it, every time Grin. Spoonful just outside his house.

whymewhyme · 28/01/2022 21:33

Ours vanished years ago, she appeared under the bath!!

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 03/02/2022 13:29

Did your hamster turn up?? Hope so..

LadyNell · 05/02/2022 20:38

Peanut butter works a treat

liveforsummer · 06/02/2022 07:43

Is your hamster back OP?

Nitgel · 06/02/2022 07:44

We had to crow bar the floorboard to get ours out arexa week or so. He was abit dusty but fine.
