I just thought I'd share some happy news. We have a acquired 2 female Guinea pigs . I was reluctant at first but do you know what they are the most georgous little pets ever. They greet me in a morning with there little squeaks and are really social and funny . They have pride of place in the kitchen as it's quite big and apparently they don't like the cold too much . I've got a dog and he is great, had hamsters and rabbits but these two little cuties are just great pets. I just never knew 😊

Ours don't very often but they'd just had a bath so were temporarily captive Grin
TheHobbitMum · 24/09/2020 00:05

Aww congratulations! They are amazing little creatures, I'm a guinea pig slave to 3 :D You have to show us photos!

Biscuit is not amused by it getting cooler so she wrapped up snug in her fleece blankets and isn't coming out except for treats (Indoor pigs so not cold really)

twinguineas · 24/09/2020 00:12

Ours are not as smart as Biscuit, they sit on their fleece.

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 24/09/2020 18:16

I've took a photo of my Guinea pigs but do not have a clue how to post the photos on Mumsnet !

@Swingoutsistersledge when you post a comment do you see a paperclip in a circle icon? If you press that you can attach a photo, we'd love to see photos!

@twinguineas
Mine are not too smart, they have a single bed side fleece cut up into segments, there are always 4 separate pieces dotted about the cage yet they fight over the same one every time Hmm

TheHobbitMum · 24/09/2020 19:02

I've just looked under there hut and we may have reached a compromise on the fleece sharing, it's only taken about a month for them to realise they can both share a bit of fleece

I miss having GP's.

Love these threads!

@TheHobbitMum. She looks like a Rock Star!

@Swingoutsistersledge2. You have the joy of watching them 'Popcorn' to come yet!!

TheHobbitMum · 24/09/2020 23:42

Biscuit is a GP diva, overdramtic drama queen! Although chonky Pip was giving attitude just now as I was late giving out bedtime treats (oxbow biscuits). He stands under his corner house and lifts it up with his head so it bangs on the side of the cage until he gets his biscuit, I've created monsters Grin

I love guinea-pigs, love the bones of them. I had them from when I was 9yo-22yo then my DD was 9yo when we started an 8 year Pig Cycle of 4 boars/4 sows . At one point we had 5 of them.

The squeaking is so cute they are very chatty . Listen to their various tones .
You get the "wheek wheek" when they know food is on the horizon
When you open the fridge
When you eat crisps or something that rustles
When you chop veg
Ears on elastic these rodents Grin
Always look at you like they're wasting away .

There's purring - sometimes a brisk happy "brrr"
Or rumblestrutting (sows do it too) where they prowl about stiff bodied doing a throaty Brrrrrrr
Pop-corning where they leap about Grin
Some sing like a bird -it's weird .
Chattering their teeth is usually a warning to their cagemate that they're cross

They very rarely bite . One of my Rescues was a gnawer, she'd give a quick pinch but minor . A child would say "It bit me" and adult not .

They are messy . Not dirty but untidy . Their pooh is inoffensive.
Sows will go into season for 24 -36 hours and they can be grumpy and their pee smells . But they fo back to their sweet selves .

When we rolled up the dirty bedding ( we used puppy pads and newspaper then hay) if they were in the cage , they ran into the waste bedding. We cleaned bedding every day and sometimes had to do with the pigs in the cages
Then replace - they ran under the paper
Put the hay in - they ran into it

"You don't get any better at this do you piggies?"

They are characters. Some like cuddles some not so much .
Our sows were more feisty independant creatures .
The boars were soppier .
Our youngest was 6weeks , oldest was 2 years when we got them.

They break your heart when they die , often they go very quick and you don't get a chance for intervention. There's a phrase "Well-to-Dead" with piggies .

Enjoy them.
And even though they probably can't go out much now they are quite happy if you go out and cut them some grass . Rinse it , let it come to room temperature . And dandelion leaves .

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/09/2020 07:40

I love piggies too. I'm glad you're enjoying them.

We got our first pair of sows 4.5 years ago, they were identical ginger twins, and were utterly gorgeous. They recently died, within a couple of weeks of each other, it was very sad ☹️ As a family we weren't really prepared for how devastated we'd be over losing them.

We thought we'd wait a bit before deciding about getting any more. But dd2 and dh were just too sad after the first died that we went and got another 2 baby sows. They are utterly gorgeous, and not identical this time so we can tell them apart! Ours are called Coco and Caramel. Coco has dark patches and Caramel has caramel patches.

We have had two that do that, it's very strange.

The strangest thing we have ever seen goes against all advice that guinea pigs are as thick as two short planks. We had one who was very protective of another pig, when the other two pigs were downstairs in the cage one tried to come up the ramp. Bright pig moved a tunnel to across the top of the ramp to stop the other pig coming up and sat behind the tunnel stopping his brother from moving it. Once the brother had given up and gone away bright pig moved the tunnel away. We'd say coincidence but he did it again twice.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 25/09/2020 13:07

I love guineapigs. We've sadly just lost one of our 3 sisters, so now I need to get another pair of girls from somewhere, as I don't think it would be fair to bring a single one in to the "family" - she'll need back up!

Fabulous creatures though - better as housepigs than outdoor pigs, they show their personalities better when they're more in contact with their hoomans.

My daughter has gone to university and my biggest consolation is that I now get to take care of the guinea pigs. We have two - a girl and a boy in two separate cages. I am so happy that they now get excited when they hear me walk down the hall and eat out of my hand.

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 01/10/2020 00:42

I so want guinea pigs. We dont have space indoors and although I know its possible to keep them outside it doesn't seem fair.

We need to move...

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 11/11/2020 16:22

Hi there . I've tried to create a thread but wouldnt let me post. I'm looking for advice about keeping Guinue pigs warm . I notice on the photos of your georgous Guinue pigs you have them on fleecy blankets or cotton squares . Would I be able to put some fleece in their house within their cage I just worried in case they chew the fabric. They are kept in my kitchen and are lovely and warm through the day but at night it can get a little draughty. They have hay and sawdust in their cage and house. Thank you

If they're indoors the room temperature shouldn't vary too much if they're not in a draught .
My piggies had a Playhouse outside and came inside for winter nights (until the last winter when we had three oldies that we kept indoors 24/7)

Our Guinea-Pig Room Grin small bedroom had no door and we kept the radiator off so they didn't overheat .
Ours made it known that they favoured and expected deep hay .
I sometimes used fleece as a base but it's a pain to wash ( you need one of those bags that trap hay ) .

We had a C&C set up and a plastic based / chrome bar cage .

Either a cardboard box full of hay ( in a vain attempt to stop it going everywhere ) in the C&C or a blanket over the top of the cage and a hay bed .

They like somewhere to hide . And box chewing at 3am is a Guinea-Pig Sport .
I used to think a blanket over the cage would shut them up , but they declared they weren't parrots in a cage Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/11/2020 22:03

Ooh just read they're in a draught Blush

Can you insulate the cage with a box over the top , if you get a big enough one , cut it to cover part of the cage ?

When we had an older boar and his new stepson we have the older boy a wicker hedgehog house covered in a layer of straw then a rubber trug 'igloo' over the top. He was nicely insulated with hay on the floor . ( New boy had taken over the big haybox )

They trap a lot of bodyheat in hay and as they're lazy animals who like to sleep ,eat and pooh without too much effort , it suits them nicely .

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 12/11/2020 00:08

Thank you for replying. Im going to try the box over the cage. I've bought them some super bedding and put a small amount in their box tonight and do you know what , when checking them before bed time they have bunched it around themselves and are snuggled together all warm and toasty . I just love them they are such characters . Thanks again for you advice . I will probably be back for more .
