I love guinea-pigs, love the bones of them. I had them from when I was 9yo-22yo then my DD was 9yo when we started an 8 year Pig Cycle of 4 boars/4 sows . At one point we had 5 of them.
The squeaking is so cute they are very chatty . Listen to their various tones .
You get the "wheek wheek" when they know food is on the horizon
When you open the fridge
When you eat crisps or something that rustles
When you chop veg
Ears on elastic these rodents
Always look at you like they're wasting away .
There's purring - sometimes a brisk happy "brrr"
Or rumblestrutting (sows do it too) where they prowl about stiff bodied doing a throaty Brrrrrrr
Pop-corning where they leap about
Some sing like a bird -it's weird .
Chattering their teeth is usually a warning to their cagemate that they're cross
They very rarely bite . One of my Rescues was a gnawer, she'd give a quick pinch but minor . A child would say "It bit me" and adult not .
They are messy . Not dirty but untidy . Their pooh is inoffensive.
Sows will go into season for 24 -36 hours and they can be grumpy and their pee smells . But they fo back to their sweet selves .
When we rolled up the dirty bedding ( we used puppy pads and newspaper then hay) if they were in the cage , they ran into the waste bedding. We cleaned bedding every day and sometimes had to do with the pigs in the cages
Then replace - they ran under the paper
Put the hay in - they ran into it
"You don't get any better at this do you piggies?"
They are characters. Some like cuddles some not so much .
Our sows were more feisty independant creatures .
The boars were soppier .
Our youngest was 6weeks , oldest was 2 years when we got them.
They break your heart when they die , often they go very quick and you don't get a chance for intervention. There's a phrase "Well-to-Dead" with piggies .
Enjoy them.
And even though they probably can't go out much now they are quite happy if you go out and cut them some grass . Rinse it , let it come to room temperature . And dandelion leaves .
