Guinea pig dying I think

He's been sleepy all day even when he went in the garden , he's now feeling cold and is sleepy and barely breathing and has just ignored the dandelion leaf next to him, they are his favourite, he's oldish and has been slowing down for awhile.

Oh dear that's sad. Maybe just keep an eye on him to make sure he is not too distressed?

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 21:06

He's lying curled up on me and will be there now until he drifts off.

wallywonker · 24/05/2020 22:18

Oh no, how's he doing? Can you just make him comfortable and warm? What's his favourite thing? Does he likes cuddles?

woodhill · 24/05/2020 22:20

So sorry op, just keep him warm and comfortable. It's heartbreaking

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/05/2020 22:24

Aw poor love , it really does sound like he's winding down.
If he's that bad he'll be beyond syringe feeding
You could maybe drop a tiny bit of water from your fingertip into the edge of his mouth, not enough to choke him, just enough to wet his tongue .

It is one of those sureal things to have a guinea-pig die in your arms .

My GP2 did his one and only wheek as he breathed his last and GP3 (who was with DD ) had a short spasm , just kicking off his traces .

Just cuddle him and stroke his fur Sad

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 23:13

He loves dandelion leaves but won't touch the one next to him. He's back in his cage now as his cage mate was squeaking for him incessantly. He knows, I'm sure he does. They are curled up under extra hay and a fleece now.

jugglingbeans · 24/05/2020 23:14

We have three (the twin guinea pigs 70) so the other won't be alone if he goes.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/05/2020 23:51

Ah, I've just twigged who he is .
If his cagemates want him back then yes, he would be best placed to settle with them.

When my GP2 was on his way , DD and I sat on DS bed watching TV . I was sitting with GP2 and his brother GP1 was being ( I thought) an utter pest! . He kept climbing on me , and pushing himself between GP2 and our hands . Then walking round him, laying next to him.
He was being like a jealous toddler ......but he was just protecting him (from us obvs)

He used to sit in the run like a Sentry while GP2 lay in the full sun.
And he didn't mind being taken away from GP2 but fretted if GP2 was taken out of the Pighouse .

Their bond was strong right to the end .

If he goes in the night , his cagemates will be able to spend time with his body Sad
This is the sad bit of keeping guineas .

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 07:46

He's still here, sleepy still but has had some water. He's lying down with his cage mate with him and squeaking quietly. I'll give him that,he's determined - he did this a month ago too.

They are so amazing. Love gps

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/05/2020 09:06

Yes, I remember your thread , he was pottering on the the first steps of The Bridge then recovered .
Is he trying to take 10 years off you because it's Bank Holiday and Lockdown ( guineas have NO sense of timing !) Wink

He needs you to get some finely chopped grass and 'lions .

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 09:23

He's got a blueberry now Smile

wallywonker · 25/05/2020 10:03

I'm glad he's got little friends around taking care of him. Probably best for them all to deal with it in their own way.

Glad he's perked up a bit.

I had guinea pigs as a kid and I remember those squeaks! Adorable!

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 10:21

They do lovely squeaks don't they? The best thing about lockdown is how much tamer he is - he's always been very tame but now he knows our routine and until a couple of days ago he'd come and stand up at the edge of the cage and wait for goodies when we had been in the kitchen or the garden.
He's retreated to his house now and is keeping out of the way of the others.

OntheWaves40 · 25/05/2020 10:23

How old is he?

KateF · 25/05/2020 10:27

Mine has been the same and has slipped away during the night. She was six so had a good long life but I will miss her so much.

woodhill · 25/05/2020 11:59

Yes so tame during lockdown and she is delighted my ds is home again to pander to her every whim😊

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 12:10

KateF sorry to hear about your little pig.
Ours is a rehomed pig so we aren't sure of his exact age - he's between 5 and 6 as we have had him 5 years and he was an adult then. His previous owners dropped him off at a vet to be treated for a medical condition and didn't collect him again.
He's now lying down in a bundle of hay doing a weird squeak like I've never heard before. He's not interested in dandelion flowers but has half heartedly munched at hay.
I can't decide to wait and see if he rallies or not or take him to the vet. If he goes to the vet it will be one way I suspect as he is not drinking and only eating a bit but he's got us cuddling him in turns and his cage mate sitting next to him, the alternative is a cardboard box to the vet, being handed over in the car park and dying without us or his pals with him. Rock and hard place Sad
When it cools down a little we're going to let him go in the run which has been put in the dandelion leaf jungle in readiness (we keep a rough patch of lawn with dandelions for them to eat)

woodhill · 25/05/2020 12:19

Sorry Katie about ur gp 🌺

KateF · 25/05/2020 14:40

I decided not to go to the vet as she wasn't distressed and I wanted her to go at home.
RIP Rolo

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 14:54

Rolo was lovely. Do you have another pig?

OP posts:
woodhill · 25/05/2020 14:55

Yes it's so hard, Rolo looks a sweet little pig, was it recent Kate?

our girlie is also coming up to 6

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 14:56

We've got 3 pigs at the moment - the elderly boar and twin pigs which we hand reared, thankfully we won't have one on it's own. We fostered the twin pigs to give elderly pig company.

OP posts:
KateF · 25/05/2020 17:09

She was an only piggy since her sister died a couple of years ago. They were never close and I didn't want to get stuck in a cycle of one being left alone if I'd got a younger one. They were my daughter's pets that I inherited and I didn't expect to get so fond of them.

She was a funny little thing and very very vocal! My dog was intrigued by her and seems upset that she's disappeared. He keeps going to look for her. I've buried her in a nice spot at the end of the garden where bluebells grow in the springtime.

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 18:13

Awww, that's lovely. We're going to find a nice spot for ours after dinner, he hung on all day and eventually went when I left the room to cook dinner. He's lying in state in the cage with one of his mates (the one he got on least well with) sitting by him and not moving from the spot and the one who was really close to him hasn't gone near him.
