Adopting a pregnant guinea pig tomorrow!

Anything I've forgotten? Not had a pregnant girl for a while, after pet shop mix ups!

This one is being "gotten rid of" as the owner has too many apparently.

I'm driving an hour and a half to collect her - must be mad!

What can we do to make her more settled? Apparently she's quite far along

You need a camera!
Bump shots of dm and lots of baby shots for us!

We got two 6 week olds and they were already pregnant. The pregnancies are sooo long, more than a dogs. They will be like dinner plates when they are ready! They gave birth over 2 months after we got them. I was worried they would die giving birth because they were so young. The first gave birth when I was dozing right next to her I didn’t notice. The other mum let out a squeak each time so we saw them being born. It was all very straight forward. I would invest in some digital scales and indoor hutches. Separate the boys as soon as you think there may be ‘activity’ - the biggest boy was trying to mate everyone by 3 weeks old. There’s a brilliant U.K. based guinea pig forum on the internet.

Thanks Nagaram - I've just been reading the advice on there funnily enough.

The owner says she's quite big. She looks fairly large on the pictures, but not dinner plate size yet. We've got the scales and indoor cages already! I hope we can find them homes x

Aw bless her, do you know how far along she is?
Is her her first litter? What age is she?

Take a big box of hay for her journey home , to cushion her and give her something to gnaw at.
Aircon in the car if its warm. Some nice veg.

Ask for some of her soiled bedding to add to your accomodation so she feels its familiar.

And a new name , my guineas always have a New Name to start their New Life , even if I know their previous name .

Once she's legally yours and she's safe , poke the previous owner in the eye for letting a poor little pig get pregnant when they have "too many" and "getting rid" Angry

And YY to pictures.

BirthdayKake · 27/07/2018 21:41

The owner doesn't know exactly how far along she is, or even how old she is...! But apparently she has been pregnant before and had one baby (which they are also getting rid of...)

Thanks for the advice 70. We'll be calling her Caramel... Her current name hasn't been mentioned actually!

Looking forward to getting some pictures of everything goes well... I'm just getting nervous about the long motorway drive now (was in a crash last time!)

One of our adopted pigs came with the name 'Princess Caramel Barbie' Hmm wasn't going to have that called out at the vet's so got shortened to Tig !!

Ohhhh baby piggies, this is going to be soooo exciting Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/07/2018 09:09

Kake do you might you come home with more than one piggie (I'm counting Mum+her unknown quantity as one Grin ) seeing as her present owners seem to be "downsizing".

Inserts rod of steel into spine if it's a OnePigRescue

Prepares to squeee if you come home with an added extra Wink

BirthdayKake · 28/07/2018 09:46

Haha 70! They've tried offloading pregnant mum's first daughter onto me already. I said I'm happy to take both for £20 (pregnant mum is £20) but I can't afford £20 each right now. The answer was "no, sorry, not sellin both 4 20" Hmm

Ooh wow, that name was... Erm... A mouthful!

Setting off soon...managed to "get rid" Grin of the child who gets car sick so I've "only" got three with me... Including one who is toilet training... And it's a 130 mile round trip... Wish me luck!

Oh I bloody hate owners like this who want to profit from their animals.(Not proper breeders obvs who have the welfare at heart and will limit the number of litters , but the Gumtree type random hobby types )

If they were responsible breeders they wouldn't be in a situation where they had no clue how old the pig is and let her get into a situation where they haven't monitored her pg. How can they not know when she ran free with an entire boar?

Most likely the "Well she cost me £X and I want to guarentee a good home blah blah "
Well paying £X didn't guarentee a good home with them Hmm

'Tis a long way to go for a piggie, good luck on the motorway .

Looks like you made it back just in time!

BirthdayKake · 28/07/2018 15:24

😂 I was a little scared we'd open the box and find a litter in there!

OP posts:
Readyfortheschoolhols · 28/07/2018 15:34

Are you taking bets for how many?
Is 3 average?
Raise that to 5!!

BirthdayKake · 28/07/2018 16:06

Average is 1-4. I think there's.... 3!

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/07/2018 16:47

Oh she's a beauty Smile

2nd litter.
No sure about dates.
Looking at the size of her....

I'll go with 4 .

Now have a stiff drink (of tea obvs) look out for rippling sides and prepare for the arrival of teeny piglets . (Whenever she decides to land them on you)

BirthdayKake · 28/07/2018 17:09

She is gorgeous, and to give the family credit, she looks very healthy and is really tame. She came from a ... Chaotic... household so is probably used to lots of noise!

I've set her up in an indoor cage with fleece and a cosy bed and lots of parsley so I guess it's a waiting game now!

Totally placemarking for baby gp updates.
Couldnt find one on my phone !

KC225 · 29/07/2018 12:39

She is gorgeous. We got two 8 month old boys from a 'teenager bored of them' last year. It's been quite a learning curve but we are all smitten with them.

There is a good Facebook page. Guinea pig support and advice.
