Gp1 DIED last night. Is it to soon to replace him today?

Thread title went wrong on the original!
So GP1, who outlived two others, was fine yesterday morning. In the evening he went downhill and of his food and died late last night
He had a good life and brought us a lot of pleasure. I'm assuming it was simply old age as he was 5.
Gp4 is 2. He's always looked to GP1 for reassurance. We left gp1 in their cage but gp4 got distressed pushing him around trying to to rouse him
How soon do we leave it before getting him a new buddy? I think he's going to be very anxious on his own.

Sorry to hear this millimat- such a shock for you and GP4 to find him this morning.

Having gone through this a couple of times I would say find a buddy ASAP. When one of my original boys died his pal was 3 and I could only match him with a baby boar. It took a few weeks to locate one in a rescue so definitely start looking.

millimat · 07/05/2018 08:42

That's my thought. I didn't know whether we needed to give him time to grieve. He's so quiet this morning Sad

Too sad. Poor pig. Poor you.

millimat · 07/05/2018 09:04

We're going to a rescue tomorrow. Hope we can pair him up.

Ah Sad GP1 but it does sound like a quick and peaceful end which is what you want.
The remaining pig has had time to acknowledge his mentor is gone ( it is really important IMO to let them have time with the body unless the dead piggie is contagious) .

With our GP1 and later GP3 they were 6 days on their own till we could get a piggie from Rescue , which was a long 6 days for them, but we kept the grieving pig in DD room for company.

Cross fingers for a good Boar Date Wink

FernieB · 08/05/2018 20:55

How did it go? Any news?

millimat · 09/05/2018 22:23

Aww we got a fur baby! So far so good. He's a teddy Smile

I do feel bad about 'replacing' gp 1 so soon but gp4 needed a buddy.

Do not feel bad about replacing gp1 so soon, they really do fare better with a friend.
We have in the past had an elderly pig die of a broken heart 3 weeks after her also elderly pal died.

So, when our Mollie died in September, Sadie really missed her. To the point that DH and Sadie nipped to our local rescue and found a baby sow without me - DH said he decided Sadie was depressed because she wasn't interested in doing the crossword with him!
Sadie certainly perked up and was/is fine (if sometimes exasperated by a boisterous baby).

FreshTart · 10/05/2018 07:13

So sorry to hear about piggy. We lost one of our girls 18 months ago, I really worried how her partner would cope and we werent in a position to be able to get a new friend. Fortunately, eldest DD was moving house so we looked after her 3 hamsters for a few months, in the same room. Im sure the noise (and smell!) helped GP1 to adjust and although she's on her own now, she seems happy with plenty of human company and lots of licks from our dog when she's allowed in the room!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 10/05/2018 09:57

EastMids - I have to ask, has Sadie taught the youngster how to do crosswords yet?

EastMidsGPs · 10/05/2018 11:31

Time
Not yet. Sadie is devoted beyond belief to DH, she is really meh around me ... she has life organised so that young Ness never gets a look in

TimeIhadaNameChange · 10/05/2018 14:16
Grin

I suppose that means you get Ness all to yourself then! You'll have to teach her how to solve Sudoku instead!

EastMidsGPs · 10/05/2018 17:57

Ness isn't that impressed with me either.
DH works from home, I have no idea what they all get up to when I am not here 😉
Parsley figures largely as did daily bags of grass from the park during the winter.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/05/2018 18:27

Teddy piggies are lovely (our Bert is a Teddy) his fur is InstDry when we wash him. No dryer needed Grin

Don't look at it as replacing GP1 , you needed the new boy and he is neatly filling the space that GP1 left in your hearts. (our GP3 left a bloody big space , he was huge but GP6-Bert- has filled it amply)

And your new little boy needed a home so Win-Win.

Now............pigtures?

EastMidsGPs · 10/05/2018 19:46

Agreed 70
There is always a piggie waiting to steal your 💖

FernieB · 10/05/2018 20:05

So pleased you've managed to find a friend so quickly - it's absolutely the best thing for piggy harmony. However, millimat you've been on these threads long enough to know that it's compulsory to provide pigtures of any new piggy for us all to coo overGrin

Hope new pig is settling in well

everygalaxy · 10/05/2018 20:10

So sorry to hear about GP1 - glad you found a new piggy so soon.

Also reassuring I’m not the only one who has pigs that adore DH!

Moonflower12 · 10/05/2018 20:59

Awww, this made me cry. The mental picture of gp4 trying to rouse his dear old friend.
So glad you got another GP as I bet your remaining piggy is.
I used to have piggies- I miss them. We have a spaniel who used to torment them. They went to an autistic boy who loves them.

millimat · 10/05/2018 22:25

Aww moonflower I've just cried thinking about it SadSad
I've not got a great picture yet but will see what we've got.
Has anyone ever got a memorial stone type thing? I want something to mark where gp1 is buried.

OP posts:
millimat · 10/05/2018 22:27

Not the best but they're sharing the hay cookie Wink

Gp1 DIED last night. Is it to soon to replace him today?

EastMidsGPs · 10/05/2018 23:41

Oh what a sweet picture !

Our garden is scattered with guinea pig 'memorial' stones, basically sort of stepping stones from local garden centres. Most are round with an image on, squirrel, wren and foot prints. However Mollie's is in the shape of an oak leaf.
None cost more than a fiver.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/05/2018 23:42

Oooh they are both gorgeous.........new piggie has got his paws right under the table and firmly on the haycookie
atta-boy

Our Rex boar got to 1.4kg (3lb) in his prime. Teddy boar is slimmer built ......but you know they have claws like eagles claws? Get your heavy duty clippers ready.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/05/2018 23:44

Come to think of it, our Boars Across The Bridge have gravestones ( kitchen floortiles with perma-pen ) but the sows (GP4/GP5) are anonymous .

FernieB · 11/05/2018 11:30

So sweet! Looks like new piggie has a few things to learn about sharing thoughWink

None of my pigs are buried (all left at the vets for cremation) but my previous Bun (whom my DM hated after she chewed her new handbag) is buried in a corner of DMs garden. Bun really had the last laugh there.
