Guinea-Pigs 'Popcorning'

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/03/2012 15:34

Nice day today, so an excuse to set up the new run. It's a rabbit run, very secure, 3 doors than can open. Very solid 'mesh/wire' about 1" gaps, long metal pegs to hold it down. Though it doesn't have a base (and rabbits dig, GPs are too lazy)

Our GP1 boar tends to 'rumblestrutt' to show off to GP2 (they are brothers)

Today he popcorned (either that or he was Tazered) jumping about, little back legs flung out, twisting his neck round like a bucking horse. Then settling down to eat grass.

I'm putting it down to Spring Fever and the fact they were out somewhere completely new and neutral. (They had a few afternoons outside when we got them last Autumn, but other bit of lawn)

Bless him.I've had an adult young boar years ago but this was the first time I've seen this.

GP2 was Confused. GP1 back to @normal' now Grin

Oh bless him Smile Our two boars are nearly 6m and the little ginger one is a major popcorner, it's hilarious!

Ours haven't been out in the garden yet (we are terrified of urban foxes, even if we buy the most fox proof run in the world, because the foxes who come into our garden are beyond brazen Shock). But we do have a big indoor run (about 6x4) that they have floor time in during the day, and the popcorning that goes on from our ginger guinea in particular is quite spectacular. They literally bounce, don't they? Grin It is so sweet.

agnesf · 12/03/2012 03:36

Put our boy out today for first time since winter too! First time out on his own since demise of big brother. Big Brother was the rumblestrutter and our boy was the popcorner.

Our boy didn't do popcorning but did have a nice time hiding under the plastic dome bin lid eating grass.

Wedding day is getting nearer ....

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 12/03/2012 03:53

My rabbit used to do that around the front room when I came home from work!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/03/2012 17:10

agnesf my GP boys are both Shock at the thought your boy popcorning after his "little gentlemans nip and tuck"

They both have muchos respect that he'd even consider the popcorning malarky Grin

(It's the first time I've known my GPs to not clear their supper plate- too full of grass) !

I put all mine ( expect expectant mum and some younger ones) out today as it was so warm and they were all very happy running about in the runs!

They live in big indoor runs but like me appreciated the sunshine!

I've left the runs out tonight in he hope it's nice tomorrow so I can put them back in

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/03/2012 23:38

damppatchnot have you got a new batch of GPs cooking?
Your original babies were Dec/Jan time IIRC.

Are these the females from your winter litter that are pg or did you get more piglets?

How many in the group now?

What's the proper name for a group of GPs I wonder.

Very Envy at baby piglets. We didn't have the baby stage with ours, they were 1 when we got them.

A group of GPs is a herd I believe as that's how they are always referred to on Rodents with Attitude.

damppatchnot · 14/03/2012 22:52

I originally had three girls and a boy and all three had babies in dec so spike is now living with Harvey!!

I have 8 girls coco, her dd muffin, marmalade, trust, lily, Lola, Dorothy and Betty( three are still babies) and 3 boys spike Harvey and Henry One of my new girls is due anyday!

All are long haired breeds except marmalade who is a smooth red

They live in the childrens two storey playhouse some in the penthouse upstairs and done in the garage part in runs of 6x 5

I adore them and can often be found hiding in there just watching them they have such funny personalities!

damppatchnot · 14/03/2012 22:53

Trust should read trudy

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 14/03/2012 22:56

Oh I miss having GP's :(

They are such lovely lovely little things.

damppatchnot · 19/03/2012 21:27

Update

One gorgeous little baby girl born at 8.15

Already running around with mummy and "aunties"

Sweetest thing.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/03/2012 12:20

Baby GPs are so sweet-like proper little guineas in miniature.
I've had baby mice -pg when bought) and we had to wait ages before mum mouse brought them out of the box.
One of our baby boys (years ago) was 'tolerated' by his mum -she'd feed him last ,the other two always got priority/ We used to put him in with his dad during the day and back to his mum to feed. They can eat pellets very young. Just as well really with a mum GP like he had Grin

Our little baby is a miniature of her mum. She's already scuttling around with the others!

Cute is not the word!

shesparkles · 21/03/2012 19:48

Baby guineas are the cutest things ever. Ours have been out in the sun today too. Can't wait till they're back in their hutch outside though -a winter of them shouting every time the fridge door opens is starting to get to me. Never mind Pavlov's dog, I have Pavlov's piggies!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/03/2012 20:48

Mine went out in the run today- grass was dry and they had 2 cardboard boxes and a towel. I promised them some "lions" (dandelions) which heralded a chorus from GP1. Then when I walked through the dry leaves he could hear the rustling. So that set off his squeaking again!

So no escape from the shouting, even outside.Grin

I put all mine out today.Such a lovely warm day Little baby trixie was running around with the big girls munching grass!

The boys were in the other run at the other end of the garden wooping away at the girls!

I sat there all afternoon watching them. Bliss

bibbityisaporker · 22/03/2012 22:15

Chipping - you aren't in London are you? I know someone with a pair of 1 year old boars she wants to re-home, complete with deluxe run ...

bibbityisaporker · 22/03/2012 22:16

My two girls had a gorgeous day on the grass today. Same again tomorrow, hopefully.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 22/03/2012 22:46

Bibbity - no I'm not, but if I could re-home them I'd happily drive to London to pick them up! Unfortunately I'm not in a position to have any at the moment or I'd be stealing deamppatchnots baby girl seeking out some little ones!! Sorry.

Any photos anyone??

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/03/2012 23:30

Aaaaah Chip - 1 Year Old Boars are Fab. And so grateful to be re-homed.

Well, that's what my 1 yo Boars say, but I would query the grateful part.

They are quite entitled IMO, not in the least bit forelock tugging. Hmm

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 22/03/2012 23:42

70's - I'm not sure my post reads right - what I meant was, I can't have any GP's at the moment :( if I could I'd happily rehome the ones Bibbity mentioned :) but I'd have already been out getting babies. Love them all :)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/03/2012 00:00

Smile I know what you mean Chip I'm just pulling your leg (in a nice way) .

TBH, I wouldn't have got our little chaps if it wasn't for my DD wanting a pet.We settled on GPs because I don't like rabbits or hamsters (And TBH it's me who's going to be doing all the mucky stuff).
I had GPs when I was her age and it's lovely to have them in the household.
(She wanted a boy, which meant 2 boys for company. Hence my phoning rescues - I've learned about Pet Shops V Rescues from MN- and finding ours.)

I consider that we are lucky to have them.
Even though GP2 can empty a room when he passes gas Envy vom.

OP posts:
ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 23/03/2012 00:08

Yeah, they might be small things but they can certainly empty a room!!

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 25/03/2012 09:45

Hi - I'm new to GPs - my friend said it's too early for them to be put in a run due to spring grass being too lush - wasn't sure if this was right or wrong?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2012 11:06

Hi fuzzy new GP mum!

You have to make sure the grass is dry before they go out. GPs don't like wet tummies and they are prone to respiratory problems.
I give mine an old bathmat and a couple of hidey spaces (boxes)

Our grass is a bit ropey at the moment. DH has cut the grass once this year. Their run needs moved now to a new patch.
Weeds like buttercups and bulbs ( I've got a couple that sneaked onto the lawn when the foxes dug them up ) are poisonous. Usually GPs avoid them ,but don't take this as read.

You could limit their grazing time if you don't want them having too much. Ours were out yesterday for 6 hours. They were warm when they came in, their bellies were dry. Mine will snooze outside (cute).

And -if you have boars- they need to excercise . Fat, elderly boars are more likely to get impaction. (I'm mum to 2 boars. I'm not relishing the impaction) Shock Envy vom
