Wrong to own clothes over 5 years old?

Bobbalina · 18/06/2010 21:24

Goks fashion fix cites the statistic of what proportion of women in each town have clothes in their wardrobe over 5 years old....is this a crime, do I need to get rid??

I have stuff over 10 years old. It still fits, it comes round again.

I regret clearing out things TBH.

EnglandAllenPoe · 18/06/2010 21:26

my pre-pregnancy wardrobe is now that old...

i'll see if its still a crime or not when i give birth and lose the baby weight!

mazzystartled · 18/06/2010 21:27

Not if
they fit
they are in good nick
they suit you
they are classic as opposed to 5 minute wonders

101damnations · 18/06/2010 21:27

I hope not.My oldest item of clothing is 25 years old.

ZZZenAgain · 18/06/2010 21:27

I have things ove 5 years old

ZZZenAgain · 18/06/2010 21:27

what do you have that is 25 years old and do you still wear it?

cheesesarnie · 18/06/2010 21:29

only if theyve been sat unworn for 5 years!
some of my most loved clothes are things ive had for years!

GrimmaTheNome · 18/06/2010 21:29

Of course its not a crime. If they're classics, keep them. If you love them, keep them. If you've got more sense than money (or time) keep them.

I am currently wearing my favourite summer skirt which I bought when I lived in the US in about 1992. I wear it every year - its a bit unusual so doesn't really scream any period, fabulously comfortable and suits me. I'll be devastated if I wear it out.

Of course if you've something lurking that you've not worn for 5 years and can't see yourself ever wearing again then ditch it.

hornofplenty · 18/06/2010 21:30

Most of my clothes are years old.

ZZZenAgain · 18/06/2010 21:30

trying to think what the oldest piece of clothing is that I own (and really still wear).

Hmmm

tethersend · 18/06/2010 21:31

Arf. Most of my clothes are older than me

Lindy · 18/06/2010 21:31

This reminds me of going out with DH's best friend and (latest) fiancee recently; I got dressed up in my best frock - 18 years old !! - was feeling pretty good about myself when I overheard DH saying to friend's fiancee politely, 'you look nice' - 'gosh' she giggled, 'This is last year's' !!! If it fits, is decent - I keep it, cannot be bothered to spend good money on clothes.

BelleDameSansMerci · 18/06/2010 21:32

Don't they become vintage at about 5 years

101damnations · 18/06/2010 21:37

ZZ,it is a bright pink fine cotton shirt that I wear every summer at some point. It was part of my staff clothing allowance when I worked at 'Richards' as a 17 year old.It is a classic style and still looks like new. They made things to last in those days.....

ShowOfHands · 18/06/2010 21:41

Well I'm still wearing stuff I wore at 17. I'm 29. And some of my favourite clothes are my Mum and Dad's stuff from the 70s. Today I have mostly been wearing my Dad's 1970s budgie jacket.

wineismysaviour · 18/06/2010 21:43

I like vintage.....it fits and i'm comfortable..

RobynLou · 18/06/2010 21:51

I realised the other day that a pair of pants I regularly wear because they're sooooo comfortable are 10 years old....

senua · 18/06/2010 21:56

DD likes to borrow an evening gown of mine that is nearly 30 years old.

olderandwider · 18/06/2010 21:58

Ok in my wardrobe and still worn

Frank Usher lbd - 80s
Fenn Wright Manson navy maxi - lush - 1998
Flat suede Pied a Terre boots - 1992 ish
Agnes B wool/cashmere coat - 1995
Lotus Leaf navy linen blazer - 1990s - worn every summer and I've just had the shoulder pads replaced. Still looking good.

I could go on.

Gok is talking cock.

ChaosInCamelot · 18/06/2010 22:00

I can't stand gok. He seems so focused on getting everyone into high street ( but disposable) clothing. He is not very ethical really. Have only watched him once it twice though as I find him so annoying. Better to have things that suit you and last. Am gutted as my fave jeans, very flattering, maybe 8+ years old have worn out .

tethersend · 18/06/2010 22:01

Just checked- I have a (roughly) 50 yr old dress.

wow 50 year old dress
I have an evening dress (kind of thing) which I hardly ever wear so it is in very good nick and very classic so not the kind of thing that dates really - and I can still -squeeze-- get into it (ok in th dark etc). That's about 15 years old.

I don't know if that really counts though because I don't know when I last wore it - over a year ago maybe.

schroeder · 18/06/2010 22:06

I've got some socks that I bought in C&A in 1990

Blu · 18/06/2010 22:07
