Goks fashion fix cites the statistic of what proportion of women in each town have clothes in their wardrobe over 5 years old....is this a crime, do I need to get rid??

I was really sad last week to notice my favourite raincoat has had it. I loved it, wore it all the time for about 10 years I think

I want to get exactly the same one again. Fat chance though I suspect

I have a pair of magical knickers - known as my "Invisknicks". They don't show under anything and no matter how tight the clothing there is never, ever a VPL. They were from M&S about 11 years ago. I wish I'd bought about 20 pairs. I sometimes think about stealing the design and marketing them...

BelleDameSansMerci · 18/06/2010 22:13

Not that it matters, but they're my "Invisi-knicks" not "Invis-knicks".

Oh yes, I also have some flat suede boots about the same vintage (maybe older) as yours, olderandwiser. DD nicks them, too.

And DS is eyeing up some truly hideous vintage 70s zip-up cardigans that DH has in the back of his wardrobe.

I still have a pair of socks that I remember wearing on my first day of senior school in 1989.

faustina · 18/06/2010 23:39

I have, and still wear, a beautiful red skirt - straight, tight -fitting. It has thin white stripes and I think it's silk. It was given to me when I was about twenty by someone who had it made in the South of France in 1946, and it's still in perfect condition.

That's the oldest thing that I actually wear. But in my wardrobe I have a Schiaparelli evening dress and jacket that was made for my grandmother in Rome in the thirties, and even though I haven't worn it for ages, how could it possibly be right to throw it away? Gok is mad.

NickOfTime · 18/06/2010 23:39

my manager at work pointed out that i had owned the top i was wearing when i started working for her in 2001.
it's one of those plain red boden v necks with velvet neckline thingys...
i was mildly fascinated that she remembered (or even cared). maybe if she paid me more i'd shop more often.

ZZZenAgain · 18/06/2010 23:41

pmsl at keeping your school socks

I love evening dresesfrom the 1930s , so glamorous and so flattering (if you are very slim that is.

I wouldn't throw that away either

A lot of my summer clothes are really old - they don't get much wear with the bad summers we've had recently!

Other things I wear regularly which are 13-14 years old are a Ghost tunic top (one of the few expensive things I have ever bought) and a Cardigan from Banana Republic (bought in the US before they had branches here).

I would only get rid of things if they were worn out or really dated looking. I was changing our bedding yesterday and dh & I realised that the duvet cover & pillow cases are around 16 years old! I have a couple if sets for single beds which are 23 years
old!

I have a black heavy lace sleeveless knee-length dress that my mum bought in Regent Street in approx 1965, before I was born. I've worn it since I was in my early twenties and and I still get it out when I need an LBD, worn with black opaques and heels, and I'm now 43. I hope it survives long enough to pass on to my dd.
Bit worried that it may dissolve upon dry-cleaning though!

Still wearing a dark red turtleneck that was my Mum's in the early 70s; still looks fab.

I once had a pair of opaque tights that lasted and still looked good for about 8 years -- wish I could remember the brand!
