bounty007 · 16/06/2010 20:19

Help!
Im' going to Wimbledon on a girly jolly, but have no idea what to wear? is there a dress code? what do most people wear? any ideas greatly received...slight problem is my size 9 feet which mean I will be wearing silver pumps or those pink funky shoes from clarks (footwear has dictated my wardrobe throughout my life )

anything goes - dress up or casual.
it can get very hot so head covering (even umbrella) may be a good idea.
do you have tickets already or are you going to queue - obv dress for comfort if you are its a long one!
very jealous btw - have a great time.

Shaz10 · 16/06/2010 20:22

Sun cream or cover up. My friend got terrible burns and blisters on her chest.

BecauseImWorthIt · 16/06/2010 20:24

If you're not going to corporate hospitality, there's no dress code. Wear whatever you like. If you're taking a picnic and plan to sit on Henman Hill/Murray Mount, wear trousers as most of the seating is on the ground.

Be comfortable and take a hat/sunscreen.

IPredictADiet · 16/06/2010 20:28

there is none.
just check the weather - there is not a huge amount of shelter from either sun or rain. it's much more jeans and t-shirt than the races.

bounty007 · 16/06/2010 20:32

thanks sharbiebowtiesarecool I entered the ballot last year and paid a small fortune for won them so no queueing required! sadly no corporate hospitality becauseImWorthit but want to look smart...would a sleeveless dress and leggings be right or too trendy??

sounds fine to me but be protected from sun and poss rain.have fun

AlaskaNebraska · 16/06/2010 20:35

anything

BecauseImWorthIt · 16/06/2010 20:38

Why do you want to look smart?!

More important to dress to be comfortable, and for the weather.

SpringHeeledJack · 16/06/2010 20:39

when it gets hot you'll find that most folk turn up completely bare- especially at Centre Court

do make sure to put on factor 50 though. And take a brolly.

bounty007 · 16/06/2010 20:44

want to look smart as; have been pregnant/breastfeeding my DCs for last 28months, so all clothes are either maternity or BF friendly, we live in the sticks so never get to dress up & its my only holiday! V excited about the tennis & going to London!! clearly need to get out more

Bounty I'm going too, got centre court for monday. I wanted to dress up a little too as i don't EVER get a day away from work and the little monsters darlings....

I was thinking jeans, t shirt and navy linen blazer, which I can take off when it gets too hot. Got size 8 feet, so i'll be in glittery sandals too!

What handbag to take though, now there is my biggest decision!!

vanitypear · 17/06/2010 20:05

Really anything goes. Just don't overegg it. Wear reasonably comfortable shoes. Yes a hat or factor 50 is a good idea although you may find yourself in shade the whole time. Sleeveless dress/leggings/flats fine. I usually try to make a bit of an effort but yes wedding/races type outfit is too much.

Murtette · 18/06/2010 16:16

I've been a few times and have done the whole range from corporate hospitality to sitting on Henham Hill. Even for corporate hospitality, I only wore white linen trousers, a smart top, heels & a pashmina. The key things are comfortable shoes (as its quite a long walk from the station and then you're walking around the grounds all day), a brolly, a hat, sunscreen and then layers of clothes so you can adjust them according to the weather. Take a bottle of water with you. Be aware of the fact that food and drink in there is ridiculously expensive so you may want to take a picnic with you which you can eat outside one of the courts. If you go onto the Wimbledon website they'll have info about what size bags, how much alcohol (and whether it can be in glass bottles) etc you can take it so its worth checking that out. Southfields (rather than Wimbledon) is the closest tube station.
Enjoy your day!

AnnDaloozier · 18/06/2010 16:17

agree long walk ( but easily do able0
food bad - is a marks in the shopping centre in wimbledon though

pagwatch · 18/06/2010 16:32

I am going on Friday
It is my best day out every year so I make the most of it.
We have really good centre court seats and also have a table booked for the day at one of corpotrate places so I am happy to dress up
I am wearing this dresswhich actually looks a bit odd in the picture but is very beautiful on.
I am wearing heels but taking some flats for when I get tired walking to and from my seat carrying champagne or Pimms. It gets quite wearing.

Before DH got flash invitations we used to go in casual stuff and take a big picnic which was equally lovely - so make sure you are comfortable and everything else will fall into place.
And as everyone else has said - sun cream!

williewalshsballs · 18/06/2010 17:20

v pretty dress pag

friend of mine in america has big feet too and she gets wonderful ladylike shoes from here page set to your size. hth

ireallyreallytrulyhatefootball · 18/06/2010 17:34

Casual through to smartish is about right. nothing more unless you are sitting in the Royal Box. It aint Ascot you know.

As well as SPF50 in case it's hot, consider that it can also get quite chilly on a day like today just sitting there so take something a little warmer too.

bounty007 · 18/06/2010 17:46

love love love the dress pag (waving & still laughing at your dog story )
cheers for tips so far

what day are you going Bounty - we could wave on the day

I know people are saying not to dress up and be comfortable but I say, as long as you can be comfortable too, then dress up as much as you like.

Of course it is not filled with be-hatted, silk gowned types but lots of people do wear lovely dresses and make an effort to look great so wear what you like

(Because of DS2s respite care it is my only big day out with DH each year and I am fucked it I am not going to wear something I feel lovely in.)

TheMoose · 18/06/2010 19:25

Dear big-footed Bounty,
Going to Wimbeldon is soooo exciting and a perfect opportunity to help your single friends bag a tennis playing hunk...so i say do the right thing and glam it up to the max!!!!!
Comfy shoes + dress + leggings + big bag containing: sun cream, hat, pashmina, picnic....
Bingo! A fun and fabulous day out...
Enjoy! x

CaveMum · 18/06/2010 21:06

I seem to recall Andy Murray's mum got refused entry to some areas a few years back because she was wearing jeans.

pagwatch · 18/06/2010 21:15

plus she tends to wear a very grumpy expression all the time............

the bit we go to tends to be quite glam. But then a few of the weirdies people in there don't seem that interested in the tennis. Like the people who spend the day in the bars...
Very odd.

wineismysaviour · 18/06/2010 21:41

ooh, theyv'e got bars there???!!!

Meglet · 18/06/2010 21:43

I had a work freebie and won debenture tickets a few years ago. I dressed up smart. It was full of kids in Abercrombie and mums in smart / casual. Jeans always ok TBH.

And giant size Pimms is the best drink ever IMO.

PommePoire · 18/06/2010 23:58

Comfortable shoes are a must; the queuing for one thing and once you are happily inside, it's fun to walk the whole of the grounds and see what's going happening on the outer courts. I can sincerely recommend this company for larger shoe sizes. Lovely quality and very nice people to deal with. Have fun, I wish I was going this year!
