i have a son 8 and a daughter 16months and i buy ds clothes from next, asda, dunnes but dd,s clothes from next, monsoon, boden am i being tight buying her more "designery" type clothes or is it normal for mums to spend more on girls clothes do you think?

ASDA, Next

JonesTheSteam · 12/08/2005 18:13

DD has clothes mostly from Asda, Tesco, Next and Woolies with a few bits and pieces from other not too expensive shops!!!

DS the same, but I seem to spend far less on him as he has a cousin about a year older, so we get loads of stuff from my sister-in-law (mostly Next and branded clothing!!!)

jenk1 · 12/08/2005 19:13

colditz-appreciate yout point but my ds has ASD so he,s not really interested in clothes-its a struggle to get him to wear any !

kbear- don't tell my 8yo ds that (or perhaps that should be please tell him!) he already knows what style of clothes that he likes and already seems to know about labels! i have brought him some designer stuff from ebay and he is very impressed with his armani jeans (so am i they only cost me £3)

generally his clothes come from boden, gap, quiksilver, usc, house of fraser and the internet.

ds2(3yo) clothes mainly come from gap, boden, monsoon, house of fraser and the internet.

i spend roughly the same on the both of them as they are completeley different builds and so hardly any of ds1 hand me downs fit ds2, also ds1 prefers fleecy and sweatshirt type winter clothes whereas ds2 gets too hot in sweatshirts so usually just has long sleeve t-shirts with a cardi or occassionally a knitted jumper.

i must admit though having 2 boys when i look at girls clothes i know that if i had a girl i would be very tempted to spend a fortune, but would try and be fair and spend roughly the same amount on each of them.

jenk1, I think you could've done with mentioning the bit about DS not being bothered about clothes and why in your first post, would've made answering appropriately much easier !

Mine are DS 10 and he likes Animal, Quiksilver, Billabong and Gap and I usually go to a shop in Tarporley, Cheshire once a year for a blowout for him. He is not interested in shopping otherwise.

DD 6 is always getting something from Next, Asda, Hennes, Ebay. Boden usually in the sale or when they offer a good discount. Pampolina for special occasions although the last 2 Pampolina outfits came from Ebay. DS is not at all interested in her gear as he gets more as he has a Playstation and Game Boy.

vickiyumyum · 12/08/2005 19:23

agree that when they are older boys probably more interested in playstation games etc and girls are more likey to see clothes as a treat. but regardless of situations of my 2 kids i still try to spend he same amount on each in general terms for clothes. would never buy one stuff from next, asda and the like and the other more designer items as even if the other child not bothered it seems a bit like favouritism, and no one would want to be accused of that. would they?

KBear · 12/08/2005 19:51

What I meant was I can't imagine an 8 year old boy in Hennes or Next or wherever cooing over party clothes like me an DD! I thought that if they are comfortable and looking kinda cool they won't care if its Quiksilver or Next. I stand corrected!

loulabelle222 · 12/08/2005 20:01

i think sometimes you have to spend a bit more on boys. I think the little girls stuff in primark is lovely but haven't seen anything in primark for ds. I get ds clothes from
Asda
Next - won't get him nothing out of there for winter it all looks hideous online!
Jojo Maman bebe
Vertbaudet
I also like the designers
MiniMan
Ted baker - some of the t-shirts are cute!
Burberry - not too much though he would look like a chav haha
Jean Bourget
Diesel

Got some bargains for ds in local designer shop Childs play...
Mini man tops reduced from £36 to £6!!!
o and would anyone pay £27.99 for a summer hat?
there are dior ones in there reduced to £5! how can they condone that much money for a hat?

loulabelle222 · 12/08/2005 20:01

oh and Hennes is great too

loulabelle222 · 12/08/2005 20:01

not to keen on gap!

hermykne · 12/08/2005 20:04

MIL owns a benetton shop so i have to say its brillant.
otherwise they get some stuff from Du pareil au meme in france -very reasonable prices and can be bought online DPAM.com i think.

m & s
monsoon - occasionally for dd
ds - basics in primark - trousers for hacking about in!

stitch · 12/08/2005 20:05

spend much more on little girl than boys.
dont think it is unfair, just society. think about how many clothes you have compared to your partners.

loulabelle222 · 12/08/2005 20:06

Forgot about M and S ! got ds loads of stuff when he was a baby! loved the cardigans. Now he is a bit older i still buy him a few things from there the jeans are lovely!

loulabelle222 · 12/08/2005 20:06

my partner has more clothes than anyone! he just never wears them !he is a nightmare!

pootlepod · 12/08/2005 20:10

Oxfam and other second hand places mainly.

Hulababy · 12/08/2005 20:15

Next
Gap
Mothercare (seems to have got a bit more up to date recently)
Asda
Other supermarkets
MN
M&S
Woolworths
Disney
Internet
Smaller shops/boutiques

Big variety really. happy to look most places, and as she has got older I have boughter less from the dearer shops and more from the cheaper places - she goes through so much at nursery, etc it just isn't worth it.

jenk1 · 12/08/2005 20:22

nomde plume- it shouldnt matter whether my son is ASD or not its about the fact that i seem to spend more money on my daughter than him and i think thats because there is more choice for girls and wondered if anyone else felt the same

OP posts:
nooka · 12/08/2005 20:41

Not sure what I actually spend on ds and dd, but I probably buy more things for dd, because she has skirts and dresses, whilst ds only has trousers (obviously tops and other things too, but they probably work out about the same). The fact that dd is both very appreciative of clothes, and enjoys shopping does make a difference, and I don't feel bad about that. ds gets more books (well, when I say ds - he thinks they are for him, but really they are for me ).

I usually make a list before shopping, in terms of what they need, and then if there is something really nice I see for either of them, that goes in the bag too. On the whole I am more likely to see nice things for dd, because there are in general more nice things for girls than boys.

The biggest struggle I have is finding appropriate things that fit. dd at coming up 5 is in size 7-8, and ds (6 1/2) is so skinny that getting clothes long enough than don't fall off is a real struggle.

The last big shop I did was at Pumpkin Patch for ds, and at Mothercare for dd.

Oh yes, and the other thing that makes a huge difference is school uniform. Once his uniform is bought ds can get by quite easily on two trousers and 3 or 4 tops all term. Generally school uniform is much cheaper than "real" clothes.

jenk1 · 12/08/2005 20:44

nooka you have just made me realise that although dd gets more money spent on her clothes ds gets even more spent on computer games, books, magazines and gets pocket money each week like you ds gets more money on books so it evens out in the end

OP posts:
nooka · 12/08/2005 21:03

Good - stop worrying! I don't think it pays to look too closely at money as a judge of fairness - after all it's the end result that matters, and also, to be honest I think that clothes for babies and little ones are really bought for whoever spends time with them. I certainly spend more on clothes for dd/ds then me - after all I look at them more often than whatever I'm wearing (only one mirror in our house!)

motherinferior · 12/08/2005 21:08

Primark, Hennes, Sainsbury's, Tesco, occasionally Mackay's, charity shops, hand me downs. The only thing I spend much money on is their shoes and their raincoats.

They look pretty nice, actually, even if cheaply attired.

bossykate · 12/08/2005 21:13

anywhere and everywhere - i'm not proud. will buy from more expensive places only in the sales. am happy to buy from nearly new sales, second hand shops and am delighted to get hand me downs.
