Would you set a diamond into this watering can?

Lauriefairycake · 16/06/2010 19:02

here but in silver

I have a diamond I don't wear which was in my first engagement ring. I had it turned into a pendant where it just hangs solitarily and I don't wear it as it's boring.

I thought if I set it into something I might wear it more as I do wear a necklace every day.

Do you think it would look nice set into the side of this

It's quite large - a carat (pear shaped)

that is revolting

FabIsGettingFit · 16/06/2010 19:05

I wouldn't, no.

ninah · 16/06/2010 19:07

sorry that was blunt
the actual diamond sounds fab though

traceybath · 16/06/2010 19:07

Trade the diamond in for a totally different piece of jewellery.

I did this with first engagement ring - and got diamond ear-rings instead

minipie · 16/06/2010 19:18

I like the necklace (better in silver)

but no I wouldn't set a diamond into it. one gem is enough.

I'd suggest getting it designed into a new necklace by itself. plenty of jewellery designers out there who'd be happy to help.

Lauriefairycake · 16/06/2010 19:28

I would take that silly hanging sapphire off.

I have 3 pairs of diamond earrings - don't want to trade it in as I won't get the 'value' of it.

Surprised no one likes the watering can though - is there anything anyone likes that would look good with it on?

Umm. The diamond sounds lovely. The watering can would be a mistake, imo. Maybe, get it set into something else? Something basic which would make a feature of the diamond more than the mad watering can element?

minipie · 16/06/2010 19:43

Could you maybe buy some silver charms and hang them on the chain with the pendant to make it less boring?

traceybath · 16/06/2010 19:44

I'd have it made into a plain pendant I think. Out of interest do you like the pear shape?

A nice contemporary setting and it would look lovely.

I took my old ring to where it was purchased from and they let me trade up and gave me the exact same value as we paid for it originally - perhaps I was lucky though.

rubyslippers · 16/06/2010 19:49

This is the oddest thread title i have seen

I don't like the design personally and would go for something plainer

blametheparents · 16/06/2010 19:57

I would def go for something plainer.
Taek it to the jeweller's and see what they suggest.

Lauriefairycake · 17/06/2010 08:13

Ok. I don't like plain - its plain at the moment, has white gold behind and it swings on a chain. Boooooooooooooooooring.

I don't wear plain tiny jewellery I wear large chunky pieces.

how about this, set to the right of the owl where the twig splits?

or this bee is 3cms across so it could just fit on its back

both in silver obviously

or at the top of this feather just casually sitting on the stem

SkipHopJump · 17/06/2010 08:19

I don't really like any of those necklaces. i'm not sure why you might want an owl/bee/watering can. So if you want it then go for it (not the owl though!!)

This is the only thing I really like on the website. Could it work? It might not be your thing at all.

This rose is pretty, here

Lauriefairycake · 17/06/2010 08:28

The rose is lovely but if the diamond went right in the middle it wouldn't look like a rose anymore.

It's too difficult .

There are some nice lockets. There is one I think with an owl hanging in it. It's hard to know where the diamond should go.

Out of all your suggestions I like the watering can the best. That is very 'in' right now as well.

minipie · 17/06/2010 16:46

I don't think you can take something that's been designed as a particular animal/thing and then stick a fairly large diamond on it - would just look too stuck on.

However you could have the diamond hung directly from a plain loop (not set into anything), and then hang it on the same necklace as the animal/thing, so they sort of hang next to each other?

this sort of effect

Biscuitbreaker · 17/06/2010 21:51

I personally don't think it will work well with the Alex Monroe designs. I would get something custom-made.

What about something like an engraved locket with a design round the diamond?

Or like this in silver with a diamond, if you can imagine it!

Biscuitbreaker · 17/06/2010 21:54

Or a key? With the diamond set into the top bit?

Last one...

QualityTime · 17/06/2010 22:25

I don't like the can.

WHat do yiu like to do though? hobbies etc?

DrivenToDistraction · 17/06/2010 22:48

I bet it'd look fab on this, maybe with therse, /product_info.html these or these beside/around it, if you must have an Alex Munroe. I think most of the other studs would catch on a bracelet.

HalfTermHero · 17/06/2010 22:52

Hmmmm. I think the problem will be that if you put a lovely diamond onto a quirky design then you run the risk of no-one realising that the stone is actually real, iyswim. Everyone will assume that it is cubiz zirconia. I take your point that a solitare necklace is delicate and simple. I am just not too sure what you can do to shake it up a bit without running the risk of spoiling it. What about making it into a right hand ring?

HalfTermHero · 17/06/2010 22:54

Oh I know, what about a necklace with the stone at the botton of a long white gold drop bar? that would make it much more eyecatching but would syill be elegant and look real, iykwim.

Lauriefairycake · 18/06/2010 09:34

Ok. I don't want a ring as it was in a ring and the diamond is bigger than my current engagement ring - its also weird in a ring - too much like the past.

I don't want elegant at all - I want it shoved on something that i can wear every day - and I want it quirky (I thought of the watering can as I have an allotment). I also don't care if anyone thinks its not real - setting it into silver is enough for people to think its not real anyway.

I'm now thinking of the long peacock feather with the diamond set into the thick 'eye' bit of the end. here but in silver It's long enough to just swing down low meaning I can wear other necklaces up high.

or the bumble bee which is the largest bee they do and it set into the back - not sure the back is big enough though. I'm going into London on Sunday so I'll go into Liberty and see.

I also already have a Theo Fennell key which I wear up high so I don't want another one.

The only problem with the Alex Monroe jewellery is it's quite fashiony and thin - I got 5 thin rings from them at Christmas and while they're lovely they're not everyday rings.
