Everything is in the title, I am considering to buy a new straightener but I have no idea which one I should go for...

Any advice?

i am not into spending alot of money on such stuff but i did buy the hype and got some ghd straighteners 3 yrs ago - quite thin ones - they are fab, still are fab and i love em.

babloogirl · 12/06/2010 19:23

Thanks, do they damage your hair a lot or do you have smooth and silky hair since using them?

Ghd. No question.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 19:26

Another vote for GHD.

I have very frizzy / wavy hair and they do a good job of calming it. I run through once when dried, not very thoroughly, to get rid of my fuzzy halo - and the frizz dies down.

If you wanted a straighter sleeker look they would also be fab.

MrsSeanBean · 12/06/2010 19:27

Re damage I use Kerastase 'Nectar Thermique' to protect from heat damage - it's a wonderful product as the conditioning / softening benefits are released upon application of heat. I would recommend.

BorisTheBold · 12/06/2010 19:37

Another vote for GHDs, I've got naturally curly hair and have used my GHDs for six years and counting with no problems - well worth the money imo.

babloogirl · 12/06/2010 19:40

Thank you all, I am really impressed that the only one mentioned is Ghd, it must be a really good one then.

Thank you as well MrsSeanBean for the advice regarding Nectar Thermique to protect from damage.

I guess I now have to look on the internet where I can find a good deal for Ghd straightener

Oh, I have went through about 10 hair straighteners over the years - various brands/ styles - GHD wins absolutely hands down. I know they are expensive but have a really good warranty and my dh bought be the pink one about 4 and a half years ago for Christmas and its still perfect (considering how many other ones just conked on me before, I should have just invested in a GHD)

You are going to definately experience some damage when using any straighteners but the key to limiting this is to never, ever put one near your hair without first putting a heat serum/ spray on your hair before using (get one for dry hair!). I've been using them for years and hairdressers always remark you wouldnt know as my hair is in good condition (get tresemme heat defense spray - put it on your hair dry, then when you dry your hair put frizz ease serum - small bit)

Make sure your hair is completely, bone dry before putting straighteners near it!!

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 12/06/2010 19:44

My hair is still in one piece and smooth - i use treseme heat defence - a few sprays then straighten - i use them daily too unless its winter andim wearig a wooly hat on my days off. Anyhows with chin length hair the stuff lasts me about 6 months.

BarbieLovesKen · 12/06/2010 19:45

LOL - snap nappy!

uggmum · 12/06/2010 19:47

As above, I have GHDs, they are the best. Also use GHD heat protection spray.

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 12/06/2010 19:47

also if your lazy and in a morning rush they are handy for ironing the bows on school dresses or collars on polo shirts - they hurt like feck if you catch your hands though

notquitenormal · 12/06/2010 19:53

I can highly recomend this heat protection spray Schwarzkopf Pro Heat Protection Spray. It's one of the cheapest, but that last time i had a trim the my hair was in such good nick hairdresser refused to believe I'd ever straightened my hair (yet I do most days.)

I use babyliss 230 straighteners, they're good on my thick but rather fine hair. I don't think they'd up to the job if you've got some serious straightening to do.

babloogirl · 12/06/2010 19:55

ha ha ha I love the fact that the straightener is multi task!!!

GHD - I didn't believe the hype until I got them and now I wouldn't use anything else they are amazing!

funkychunkymunky · 12/06/2010 20:02

GHD. No contest.

Tootlesmummy · 12/06/2010 20:12

GHD are the only ones to have, no question.

AnyFuleKno · 12/06/2010 20:18

Just for a different opinion, mine are from Saks hair salon, their own brand. I've had them for about 7 years and they still work perfectly. I tried my friends GHDs and mine are just as good and cost about two thirds as much as GHDs. What you're looking for is the thickness of the ceramic plates. Some cheap straighteners have metal plates with thin ceramic coating which wears off quickly I think. The higher end ones have thicker coating.

NiceShoes · 12/06/2010 20:30

I have tried them all,and GHD are best by a country mile.

ILiveinhope · 12/06/2010 20:32

GHD, there is no contest imo

OhExpletive · 12/06/2010 20:39

GHD. And, I hardly ever use any heat protection product at all. It makes not a sod of a difference IMO (with GHDs - that wasn't the case with any of the straighteners I used before!). As long as your hair is always really, really dry before you straighten it and as long as you are meticulous about combing through before you straighten, it's fine.

I think it's because with GHDs you don't need to clamp down on the hair or pull it straight at all - they're so hot that they straighten your hair without you having to put any pressure on it. Light contact as the hair goes through the irons is fine. And that saves breakage and splitting. Hairdressers always comment on my hair's good condition - I suspect because it's not slick with products all the time!

AvadaKedavra · 13/06/2010 06:56

Have had GHD in the past but my babyliss pro 230 are just as good if not better. I have thick wavy hair and lots of it!

mono3 · 13/06/2010 07:58

A year ago I would have agreed with other posters and said GHDs but have since (on advice of my hairdresser) got some Paul Mitchell ones and think they are brilliant. They are flatter and can get closer to the roots and are as good in all other ways as GHDs and are cheaper. Didn't think I would ever find a straightner to rival GHDs - I have had about 3 sets of them. My hair is thick and very curly and the Paul Mitchell ones deal with it no problem.

GeekOfTheWeek · 13/06/2010 10:15

I'm with avadakedavra.

Babyliss pro 230 much better than ghd on my hair. Vey thick, long and curly.

cookielove · 13/06/2010 10:19

I would also vote ghds they are the best, any brand that means good hair day, your really not going to go wrong
