OMG. £99 for hair cut.

Totally disillusioned after looking at the little card with prices. Used to have chin length hair with fringe (dyed dark). Went and paid about £89 restyle, t section highlights. Third time back, and bearing it mind my hair doesn't reach the bottom of my ears, I've paid £99 for a reshape and half highlights. Oh and a fiver on some treatment I really needed. There's no suggestion on the card that I couln't have waist length hair and pay the same for highlights. Really feel like a mug.

didn't you complain at the time? or find out costs beforehand

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 18:44

i sort of knew that's how much it costs. It's only now that I just realised how bloody extortionate it is for hair about 1.5 inches long. £55 for half highlights (technician) and £39 for cut and dry. Think am just working out what needs to go in this credit crunch thing.

eek that is alot, i pay £55 for full head but its a granny salon

CoupleofKooks · 31/05/2010 18:46

is it toni and guy? they are expensive, you could definitely find a cheaper salon

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 18:52

no, and no complaints about the 'cut' or colour, just it seems to be the norm amongst high street chains to have a starting point of £lots of money for the bottom tier trainess upwards. I think that's why i just gulped, switched it and only now am thinking wtf! Seriously, my hair is shory. Cheekbone length when straightened.

I think thats pretty poor actually - most hairdressers have different prices for longer hair. So they should have different prices for shorter hair.

the developing time is the same but putting them in on longer hair takes much longer.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2010 18:55

that is incredibly expensive.

i don't know how a lot of these places stay in business, tbh.

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 18:59

expat - i think maybe people have got used to paying that much, and its pretty much like buying milk - not much difference if you shop on the high street. Was a treat as we are so skint, but definitely can't afford to do that ever again. Am thinking long grey hair will be making a comeback anyway... Laurie - i'm sure they used to, but i was v surprised that the card didn't show different prices.

I worked in a hairdresser's years ago, a small town one but they were known as the 'posh' one and sold Paul Mitchell products.
Total rip off and not even good service.
Of course that doesn't reflect other salons but the fact that so many people, were so easily conned by the fact that we stocked expensive products...

I cut my own hair, and I dye it myself too!
If I arse up, I'll pay the prices, rather than pay them every month to be ripped off.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2010 19:02

What mugglewump said.

I do all mine at home, too.

There's no way I could afford to maintain that.

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 19:20

no same here. i may just buy some clips from clares and grow it out...i do like the blonde tho as i am v grey underneath. my friend has said the same muggle, and laughed when i came home with a £15 product. I actually feel a bit now.

'fraid i think it's a bargain! In the SE I pay anything from £75- £100+ for half a head of highlights, plus another £60 for a cut on top of that.

Highlights without the cut are as above plus £25 for blow dry.

ChippyMinton · 31/05/2010 19:26

Not that expensive for a salon, esp. in SE.

Mind you I now pay exactly half what I used to, to the same hairdresser, who comes to my house.

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 19:26

LOL purple. It's more the fact that I have paid a lot of money to have 1.5 inches of half my hair highlighted, and put back into shape. A bit like when we had money and I bought a Mulberry and a Prada now we don't i can't ever see me buying a posh bag again!

purplepeony · 31/05/2010 19:27

p.s- it's not so much the length of hair that counts, it's how many highlights they use- that is what takes the time. But some hairdressers do have different prices for long hair if you want highlights.

Maybe you need to reassess if having such a short style and highlights is money well spent? You are always going to get regrowth with very short hair that is noticeable.

I have longer- jaw length hair and can get away with highlights done every 6-9 months, as they are near my own colour and the summer sun does the rest.

southeastastra · 31/05/2010 19:27

a bargain! for an inch and a half! they are ripping you off, i'd complain.

TrinityTrinityTrinity · 31/05/2010 19:27

wow thats ridiculous

I haven't been to a hairdresser for years

purplepeony · 31/05/2010 19:30

But SEA the time taken to put chemicals and foil around hair is almost the same if it is 1.5 inches or 6 inches. in fact it might be more fiddly to do short hair.
It's not the amount of product but the time that counts- and the salon's fixed costs are the same whatever length your hair is.

southeastastra · 31/05/2010 19:32

half a head doesn't take that long though does it?

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 19:33

i think it's just way too expensive for me - i did want a 20s bob but now have a 60s mary quant, so will go back to plan a! It is the norm in SE high street - just seems soooo much money. I am now putting highlights in my cupcakes and personalised baby blankets box (ie do not buy!)

funkychunkymunky · 31/05/2010 19:35

It costs me £50 for T section highlights and reshape. I have shoulder length, very thick, curly hair.

I think it's definitely worth shopping around. I recently moved so I asked lots of my neighbours where they go and rough prices so that I wouldn't end up with a cheap but terrible cut!

I used to pay £90 for the same thing when I lived in South Yorkshire - I couldn't find anywhere cheaper.

RubberDuck · 31/05/2010 19:36

It's worth asking around for recommendations for mobile hairdressers. I have a fab one near me and get cut, colour and styling for £35 - tons cheaper, and no hassle parking in town. The only downside is I have to hoover up my own hair at the end but I can cope with that for over 50% cost saving.

purplepeony · 31/05/2010 19:37

Half a head takes my hairdresser at least 45 minutes and they use 3 colours.

You have to consider the salon's fixed costs such as rent/lease, rates, water rates, salaries etc etc- not just the time they spend on your hair.

expatinscotland · 31/05/2010 19:55

That's just a major rip off.

Trinity, me, neither, and I won't be going any time soon they are such a rip off.

angel2001 · 31/05/2010 20:32

i have a fab home hairdresser who charges 7 for a cut and 25 for cut and colour and she does my daughter free alot of the time. could never justify paying any mre that 3o for a cut. she does a fab job too. think i will stick with her
