Help! Is this a vile sack?

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 07:49

I bought this yesterday in a size 12.

Got it home and tried it on and said to my husband "do you like my new dress?" (he always says yes btw). And he said "No. it makes you look huge"

Bloody hell! Shall I ignore him?

I think it's pretty and I am a size 12. That's not huge.

tbh it looks pretty shapeless and you could probably get something a lot more flattering. It does look a bit like a sack.

Sorry.

You could rescue it with a nice belt to give it some shape.

traumaqueen · 29/05/2010 08:12

Sorry, IMHO vile sack unless you are drifting around in the Tuscan sunshine wearing expensive sandals and a hat like that.

Floight · 29/05/2010 08:13

Oh it's really nice.

I dunno about the huge thing - it might look different on? But I like it.

belgo · 29/05/2010 08:13

yes sorry it looks almost exactly like the brown sacks we have to use here for the recycling.

belgo · 29/05/2010 08:15

I'm also a size 12 and you do have to be careful with the clothes you wear, if you are not careful you can end up looking bigger then your size.

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 08:16

Maybe I'll take it back.

I was a bit worried taking advice from a man dressed in old gardening jeans and a t shirt with holes in it!

I lost a lot of weight recently (from the norks) so suddenly I can fit into clothes I never dreamt of before.

But I can't seem to find anything to buy that's flattering. I just want a pretty light summer dress.

try H&M I've just bought a couple of size 12 short dresses there, both fairly cheap.

belgo · 29/05/2010 08:19

'I lost a lot of weight recently (from the norks) so suddenly I can fit into clothes I never dreamt of before.'

all the more reason to choose a dress that flatters your figure rather then hiding it!

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 08:20

Thanks Belgo. I knew you fashion ladies would help me out.

wineismysaviour · 29/05/2010 08:48

It is a bit sack like tbh, and if I was a size 12 I would be showing off my curves and not hiding them...

Maybe try a wide belt cinched in under the bust?

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 08:57

Yeah I wondered about a belt and also fantasised about how lovely it would be wearing it while wafting about south of France ..

BUT I was shopping for semi smart clothes for work and I obviously got sidetracked on to the fashion dark side.

I also bought a pair of linen trousers that are too tight and 3 bras that are too big.

Maybe I'll give up shopping.

OP posts:
wineismysaviour · 29/05/2010 08:58

Oooh no, that just equates to another shopping trip - look on the bright side!

ameliameerkat · 29/05/2010 11:38

I'm a size 12 and that would make me look fat also. If you're a tall size 12 it might be fine, but as a 5foot4 size 12 I concur with Belgo that you need to be careful. I got some cute summer dresses in Primark the other day for the bargainous price of £7.50 each

electra · 29/05/2010 11:42

I think you have to be very careful with brown - it can make you look frumpy. Agree with the comment about expensive sandals and hat.

cyb · 29/05/2010 11:44

its is shapeless and looks ok on her on the screen as it is probably bull dog clipped down the back to give it a bit more shape

I dont like the pattern eitehr

For that amount of money I wouldnt keep it. And if you were 100% convinced you woudlnt be posting on here

shop for your new shape, take a mate

electra · 29/05/2010 12:07

And for that money I'm sure you can get something much more fab.

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 12:15

Yes t'was an expensive sack.

Mr Wedlocked well chuffed to find he is agreed with by the style queens of Mumsnet. Getting a bit up himself now - just said "Is it A line? That would do your figure no favours". This from a man who wears shirts he bought in 1990.

Jigsaw have a nicer dress: www.jigsaw-online.com/fashion/1000884/J10093/womens/dresses/seascape-print-dress Or the embroidered one looks nice

pagwatch · 29/05/2010 12:37

at "is it A-line" from Mr Wedlocked.

I too would have been suckered by the mental image wafting about in St Tropez with disreet gold jewellery in a poor mans DVF . The reality is looking brwon and shapeless in the queue at Sainsburys.

[sigh]

wedlocked · 29/05/2010 12:50

Thanks Blouse. I will just run the other Jigsaw dresses past my new personal Gok Wan.

Yes Pagwatch - "brown and shapeless" sums it up and is a terrible phrase indeed. What was I bloody thinking? The shopping trip had turned into an escapist fantasy.

thumbwitch · 29/05/2010 12:55

I'm going with vile sack as well, sorry.

And honestly?

you "said to my husband "do you like my new dress?" (he always says yes btw). And he said "No. it makes you look huge"

If he always says yes, and this time he says no - I think you should have accepted his judgement! If he was a "whatever you like is fine by me dear " type of man, then defo worth checking - but your DH always says yes and this time said No - he meant it. And IMO he would be right.

piratecat · 29/05/2010 13:01

i don't like it, think there's nicer stuff around for that money sorry.

Warmseabreeze · 29/05/2010 13:10

Sorry I think it is a sack, even the model doesn't look good in it!

KurriKurri · 29/05/2010 13:40

I quite like the fabric, but agree its a wee bit maternity.

at 'is it A line' - there will be no living with him now!

DilysPrice · 29/05/2010 13:48

Take it back - I'm sure you can find something nicer for 95 quid.
