Does anyone else do that thing of saying "I'll wait until I've lost weight before I buy anything new"?

I say this constantly, and in the meantime I dress awfully. I think I'm getting to the stage where I'm just realising that I'm never going to lose weight, I would have done it a long time ago if it was that important to me. But, that means thinking differently about the way I dress, and I don't know where to start really.

for me it's more akin to "won't buy anything nice" like I don't deserve to look good. what's all that about?

Miffles · 27/05/2010 21:42

That's wrong, wrong, wrong MissWooWoo!!! That will not make you happy! I love buying "pretty" tops. Oh, and having comfy trousers that don't cut me in half

MissWooWoo · 27/05/2010 21:45

it's tragic Miffles tragic

MissWooWoo · 27/05/2010 21:49

oh hang on, I did buy a very gorgeous maxi dress a few months ago and some nice trainers too so maybe it's not all that tragic

cyb · 27/05/2010 22:14

rasputin yes you can do it

(I'mprob not one to talk atm having just seen off 3 chocs from a box of Milk tray) BUT I have lost weight in a month by planning food (and eating no diet/low fat crap either) and being strong and you will do it

You've just got to want to do it

shandyleer · 27/05/2010 22:18

Oh thank you everyone, had to go and unblock the loo, such a glamourous life I lead (culprit was a toothbrush if anyone's interested)

I can so identify with what dizzy said about disguising not dressing, and also with MissWooWoo about not deserving to look good. I even gave Style and Beauty a miss for a while cos I thought there was no point being here. However, I don't feel nearly as down as I sound, I just think I'm reaching a point of acceptance as all previous attempts at doing anything have failed.

Lots of wise words on here though, and I think I will go to H & M and have a browse.

shandyleer - glad you started this.
I too gave s&b a wide berth for a while as felt am too fat for fashion. Am determined to try and pull myself together. H&M here i come for SS10

LetThemEatCake · 28/05/2010 10:00

H&M brilliant. Try Zara too.

veryconfusedandupset · 28/05/2010 10:37

I had this problem too, in February I was 12 st 8lb and bordering on size 16. Have now lost 1 st 13lb and am a 12. I have an enormous wardrobe full of size 10s which I hope to wear in later in the summer and in the winter. I have bought clothes on ebay to tide me over, reckon I can sell on my 14s for what I paid for them (very little indeed, some 99p) When I am very fat I just buy a basic seasonal wardrobe from Asda, as really at 12 stone plus it is just a question of covering everything up decently and I certainly don't want to look in the mirror ( only 5'3")

vintage · 28/05/2010 10:51

i started my weigh loss in January i was a 20 up top and an 18 trousers etc now im a size 12/14 and i bought loads of size 16s which i havnt even been able to get any wear out of at all waste of money

MissWooWoo · 28/05/2010 10:53

know ^exactly what you mean veryconfused* I have a lot of stuff from Sainsburys because it fits, doesn't cost much and I can bung it in the trolley with the food shop ...most of which I wouldn't give the time of day if I was smaller. I don't seem to have this problem in winter and have lots of nice tops to wear with jeans and some good (warmer) dresses but as we head to summer (?) my confidence plummets because being heavier is so much more obvious. That's a lot of weight to lose in a few months, you must be feeling so good! ... how did you do it?

MissWooWoo · 28/05/2010 10:54

exactly

well done vintage! ebay the 16s?

MissWooWoo · 28/05/2010 11:43

so ... I am thinking of ordering this dress in a bid to be kinder to myself. Ticks a lot of boxes (bingo wings covered, not too short) and I like it. Shall I go for it? am size 16, 5 ft 7

although what I'd really like is something like this but alas my arms are like ham hocks ... could always wear it with this

notquitenormal · 28/05/2010 12:08

MR WooWoo - I really like that first dress. Tis ver cute. If it's no good, just send it back. If it still works, Code SHOPSS2010 should get you 20% too.

notquitenormal · 28/05/2010 12:09

I used to avoid buying clothes but then I snapped out of it. It may have been Trinny & Susannah's fault. I tried out lots of things to see what suited me and bought a versatile, but inexpensive wardrobe. Afterwards I felt a lot better about myself and my figure and, surprise, began to lose weight without even doing anything.

I was a size 22-24, 3 years and 1 baby later I'm a size 18. I sold the clothes on ebay and used the money to replace them.

Now I buy what I like, sell on regularly and don't worry about the size. I only lose about a 1lb a month anyway When I'm about 40, maybe i'll be a size 10.

notquitenormal · 28/05/2010 12:10

MR - doh, MISS!

MissWooWoo · 28/05/2010 13:04

right! I've ordered it, code didn't work but went through virgin airmiles so that's good enough at 4 miles a £1 - plumped (no pun intended) for saturday delivery so hopefully will have something nice to wear over the bank holiday weekend - weather permitting

well done on your weight loss notquitenormal I feel inspired! if I keep the dress watch out for it on ebay in a couple of months time - we could both have dropped a dress size by then, no?

Romanarama · 28/05/2010 18:38

Don't forget that you can have things adjusted, or even do it yourself. If it's from Sainsburys then prob cheaper to buy another one, but more expensive things are worth taking to a tailor. I have done this with lots of things. You can buy with this in mind.

dexter73 · 28/05/2010 18:46

MissWooWoo - love the dress! Weather is looking good for Sunday/Monday so you can look fab in your new dress!

LetThemEatCake · 28/05/2010 18:56

MissWooWoo - you'll look lovely. Have just posted to you on the Avid & Wise thread too

shandyleer · 28/05/2010 21:51

I love both those dresses MissWooWoo, will you let us know what the first one looks like on?

AWellHungParliament · 28/05/2010 22:11

That is a lovely dress MissWooWoo, I hope you feel fabulous in it.

I have recently taken an interest in dressing nicely again having dropped a dress size to a 12, I don't spend a lot but I aim to feel good. My confidence has increased so much.

It is also having the effect of making me want to lose more weight so that I can buy what I want and be reasonably sure it will look good on.
That is quite a motivator for me.

MissWooWoo · 28/05/2010 23:36

thanks lovely ladies will post back later and let you know

reallygrumpy · 28/05/2010 23:41

Miffles I've also got PCOS and struggle with weight gain (not helped by a sugar addiction). Have you spoken to your doctor about metformin? It's a diabetes drug that can help control the symptoms of PCOS (especially weight gain). I've taken it on and off for the last couple of years and it makes a big difference but does have horrible side effects for the first week or two.

Miffles · 29/05/2010 17:07

Thanks reallygrumpy (though I'm sure you're not!!). I am waiting for a scan to confirm the PCOS, but am sure i have it...weight gain, but also v irregular periods and more hairy...also mum and sis do...

When i spoke to my doc, he said we'll get a diagnosis first, then asked me what i wanted to do. since we're wanting to have a family, it was that that i was most concerned about. so he'll be referring me to a fertility specialist.

But i had thought i had to manage to lose weight myself...which is much harder than when i was on the pill!!! i hadn't realised that metformin can help the weight loss. good to know! why do you come on and off it?
