Mid life Goth Crisis

bobdog · 27/05/2010 13:23

I'm soon to be 37 with two small children and am bored of the mish mash of dull, brightly coloured bodenesque style mummy clothing that have infiltrated my wardrobe over the last few years.

I am size 12/14 hourglass with mouse hair. I used to wear a lot of vintage stuff and had 'style' rather then fashion.

I am drawn to these Dr Martens
store.drmartens.co.uk/p-2146-dr-martens-triumph-1914-w-boot.aspx

and All Saints tops and knitwear however my wardrobe contains mostly bootcut jeans and depressing jersey tops.

Guess I'm on the cusp of falling into the eccentric side of school gate mums soo
will my children hate me?
Should I just grow up and dress my age?
Do you shy away from the others nod to fashion sensible stuff and are pleased/aware of family's despair
Should I just take a deep breathe and watch Gok?
Thank you

wear what you like! i can boden it up with the best of them, weave yurts out of lentils or look like a guns and roses groupie circa 1988. i love clothes and wear what suits my mood and makes me feel good

harleyd · 27/05/2010 13:31

i love those dm's

im 35 and have no intention of ever dressing mumsy or sensible

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 27/05/2010 13:36

Love the thread title. Love those boots.

Wear what you want. You're children are going to hate you and be embarrassed by you whatever you wear, so you might as well be happy!

Since having children, I seem to have acquired a wardrobe full of clothes that aren't me. All very mumsy. I need to refind my style. (Although I'm deluded if I think I ever had any!)

bobdog · 27/05/2010 14:00

OK who's like MayorNaze with a bigger wardrobe then Mr Ben or do you glide through life wearing the same for example classic or high fashion style at work/school/beach with just the odd tweak.

My 18 year old self would be disgusted that now I've no boss (i'm a sahm slave) I've adopted a 'uniform' but I'm scared of mutton dressed as lamb and slightly that feeling when you see older women trapped in the timewarp of their youth.

Ace boots! I've been having a style crisis since having ds a year ago and developing a cs belly that behaves very differently from before, and have spent loads on clothes this year trying to find something that works. Have drifted back to my previous rock chicky/slightly gothy look now though and feel happier! DH also loves that look - no matter what I wear, I never get as big a reaction as when I wear my biker boots.

ticktockclock · 27/05/2010 14:38

I agree that you should wear what you want so long as you look good in it. I have a very diverse taste in clothes and can wear the boden skirt and t-shirt with beaded necklace or like toda my Daisy Duck Faded and Distressed sweat top with a pair of hareem jeans.

I still (and probably always will) like a bit of leather.

MayorNaze · 27/05/2010 15:44

lol at me being like mr ben

forgot to say LOVE the boots OP - go for it

CMOTdibbler · 27/05/2010 15:56

Lush boots . I wear mostly black. And purple. And don't really do fashion at all - but then I never have. I do have some Boden things for work, but am mostly more of a short dress/long tunic and leggings/jeggings with boots or converse sort of girl given the choice.

DH likes the rock chick look best, but then, when we first started going out, he was a rock club DJ

MrsMeow · 27/05/2010 16:07

I love those boots! I'm lusting over a pair of Fly London Mols at the min, but think I may have just had my head turned. I'm such a hussy!

I'd wear them with black skinny jeans and my fab purply grey checked River Island shirt.

bobdog · 27/05/2010 19:35

I want Fly boots too, different heights in all the colours. Why does n't clothes shopping seem so 'lustful' even when money is burning a hole in my pocket I so rarely find stuff to fall in love with.

Love teh boots.

I recognise the fear of ending up like Annie Nightingale and yet, simultaneously, your younger self being horrified at the sensible mumsy me.

mslucy · 27/05/2010 21:39

Your boots are great, but then I've just purchased a pair of lilac patent DMs.
in a smaller size :)
I am 39 and 3/4.
I have received a lot of love for those boots - from builders in the street, my evil boss and even the Boden mums at the school gate.
Wear what you like - who cares if you look a bit odd.
My husbband refers to my wardrobe as a "dressing up box" and I think he may have a point.

Bin the bootcuts and re-embrace your inner goth

Cicatrice · 27/05/2010 22:18

Your boots are good. Go for it.

Soups · 27/05/2010 22:23

I lurve those boots

chimchar · 28/05/2010 07:20

another fan of the boots!

i'm 36. i would discribe myself as "arty"

i tend to wear lots of layered tunics/dresses/jumpers with leggings or jeans and biker boots.

i go with what i feel right in. i buy a bit from joe browns and dress it my way. i trawl charity shops looking for the odd thing, and buy lots of basics like t shirts for layering or wearing under stuff from places like george/matalan/primark.

i say go for what feels right.

as i'm getting older, i'm getting more "fuck you" with my attitude....and you know what? it feels good!

PrammyMammy · 28/05/2010 14:35

I have those boots in cherry red. I also have 2 dc's.
Do it, but beware they are a killer to break in - well worth it though.

makeupmummy · 28/05/2010 17:08

am 40 (sssh) and am also drifting back to gothy, bikery ways of youth, love my biker boots, wear with dresses, leggings and stuff and stop me looking too Mrs Darbus, spent too long feeling need conform mummy-ish/work look, now is my time, hehe Get the boots!

YouDontRememberMeDoYou · 28/05/2010 17:15

I'm 36 and more Boho than Goth but have 4 pairs of DMs and really want these.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 28/05/2010 17:19

Love them.

I actually just sang Dr Marten, Dr Marten, Dr Marten Boots, when I saw that/ And it made me damn happy. I had 8-holers in racing green. I loved them so much.

makeupmummy · 28/05/2010 19:16

how can i have missed out on Fly boots? shopping head on now....

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 28/05/2010 19:21
CuppaTeaJanice · 28/05/2010 19:45

I have DMs that come up to my knees - I think they've got about 20 pairs of eyelets.

Absolute pain in the arse to do up, otherwise I'd probably wear them every day.

If you want really funky boots though, and you've got a bit of spare cash, look at New Rock boots. My friend has some with silver-clad heels and flames up the sides

bobdog · 28/05/2010 20:26

Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and brave words.

This afternoon I have bought the boots and cheekily looked the shop assistent straight in the eye and got student discount .

I now feel much, much younger, happier and bazaarly free-er, not so much 'sex in the city' writing this like that skinny bird who surely can't really walk far more 'fun in the country'.

At my daughter's school one of the teachers I really like is one a different fashion planet (60's beach babe) and she is the best fun, comfortable in her clothing woman around.

I guess with having children you have to pick up so much responsibility and work so quickly that you lose confidence in other areas including appearance. so looking for encouragement in real life, not sunday magazines, tv make overs and glam mags.

Thanks ladies, surely it can't be wrong to cut down on the raspberry knitwear and just ring the changes with frack off boots

I love those boots and the other ones linked to on this thread.

I have just bought these and dd has threatned to disown me.

HinnyPet · 28/05/2010 20:45

Love the boots! I want them!!

Okay, am I in a mummy uniform too!? I wear skinny jeans or bootcut, suede boots, cotton long sleeve coloured tops, coloured stretchy bracelets and pendants. I was a rock chick once
