What on earth do thirty-somethings wear for a night on the tiles?

Style gurus, I need help!

I'm meeting some friends for a night out in Manchester and have no clue what to wear.

I'm 34, 5'7, pale, brown bob and size 12. Tend to dress in black but don't dislike colour. Not keen on fussy.

There is an outfit out there that will make me look 5'10, size 8 and aged 24, right? Right???

haha - I need them

Do they make full body spanx then? They would have to come up to the neck for me.

KodakTheBat · 26/05/2010 22:11

This top

Footless tights

Shoes

Necklace

Wear with lots of gold bangles

BitOfFun · 26/05/2010 22:16

I like the style of that, Kodak, but the colour is a bit drab. They say Mink, but it might as well be Rat.

DreamsInBinary · 26/05/2010 22:17

That is a fab look, Kodak. Will check local topshop for my size in stock.

What colour tights? I'm hopeless.

PlumSykes · 26/05/2010 22:18

How are your arms? Are you happy showing them? Skinnies and a loose sleeveless silk top with some heels would look great, and hopefully not feel too weird if you're not used to going out.

LadyBlaBlah · 26/05/2010 22:18

LOL

With brown chestnut hair ok

Blonde/mousy no way

KodakTheBat · 26/05/2010 22:18

@ 'rat'

I've got a bit of a gold jewelery obsession at the moment, so I'm favouring anything that can be worn with it

KodakTheBat · 26/05/2010 22:20

Thanks DIB Tis fun shopping for someone else

I'd probably play it safe with black tights...

What colour is your hair?

DreamsInBinary · 26/05/2010 22:24

Arms pale but OK - happy to get them out, anyway. Would def be happy with that type of outfit, Plum.

Hair is mid-brown and just above shoulders.

Rat is the new black, no?

Hmm. Just linked to a top but has dissappeared.

try again

PlumSykes · 26/05/2010 22:32

Was talking to friend from Manc the other day, as had been watching Phil and Kirstie and was amazed at how groomed and 'done' all the girls were, even just to go house-hunting (I know they were on TV, but honestly, it was like watching the girls at Aintree all over again). Apparently, going 'out' in Manchester can be pretty WAG-tastic, so dress up UP UP, and if in doubt, get a spray-tan and a blow-out!

DreamsInBinary · 26/05/2010 22:38

Oh good god. Will skinnies and heels cut it? I can say with certainty that WAG is beyond me!

Like that green top v much - how do you all find these things??

OP posts:
BitOfFun · 26/05/2010 22:38

Heh heh- it is a 'tee'. A 'luxe' tee. That will get the pedants going...

PlumSykes · 26/05/2010 22:39

I think you just need you paint yourself orange and you'll be fine.

PlumSykes · 26/05/2010 22:47

Okay, have been thinking more.

Lots of black/grey eyeliner
hair a bit in eyes, all foxy-like
Jingly-jangly earrings
Silky top
fitted blazer
black skinnies
fuck off heels
over-sized clutch bag.

You will look utterly killing, and possibly even pull a footballer. Yuck.

DreamsInBinary · 26/05/2010 22:57

Yuck indeed.

I love, love, love the picture you paint. Very much how I would like to look. How exciting!

traceybath · 27/05/2010 06:34

Oh is this for your meet-up? How exciting!

Dorothy Perkins have got some nice maxi dresses in at around the £30 mark and warehouse have nice shorter dresses.

New Look have good reasonably priced heels.

Have a fab time!

Lizzylou · 27/05/2010 08:11

Oh no, I was planning on skinnies, a silky top and some wooden heeled clog things.

But I am a good few sizes bigger than you

Arse.

BitOfFun · 27/05/2010 08:21

I don't think you can go too far wrong with trousers/jeans and a nice top with high heels and plenty of jewellery for a night out. I don't feel confident in a dress unless I'm uber-slim and my skin is nice. A big smile and enough perfume to strip paint, et voila!

Coderooo · 27/05/2010 08:23

i ADORE the mn phrase jeans and a " nice top"

no acksherally illwear my SHIT top

DreamsInBinary · 27/05/2010 08:32

Off to try things on at lunch and will report back.

Will do my utmost not to buy a shit top, but they tend to morph from nice as soon as I see them in a non-thinnifying mirror.

OP posts:
hellsbelles · 27/05/2010 13:42

ohhh...I like Plum's top. Shall we go matchy matchy DIB

BOF - I can confirm that spanx do whole body style things . I have worn seen them.

DreamsInBinary · 27/05/2010 13:55

Topshop dress in 12 looked enormous but was a little snug around the chest, so will check stock for when a larger size comes in.

ASOS necklace ordered.

New Look skinnies bought - they are a better fit than my fav Baxters.

New Look blazer tried in black, but they didn't have the grey. Again, fitted nicely - who knew?!

Failed totally on the shoe front. Will Kodak's lovely shoes go with black skinnies?

Plum - please tell me I can get that outfit in one shop...? [hopeful]

Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse and John Lewis scheduled for the weekend.

Thanks again
