Sunglasses - can someone educate me?

I need your expert advice, please. I need a pair of everything-proof sunglasses - by which I mean they stay on when I bend down, and the tolerate being pushed up on my head when I go inside (yes, I know you shouldn't do that, but I do and I can't see my breaking the habit) and won't be detroyed by being dropped once or twice. I have a pair of Bulgari wrap-around ones which, whilst beautiful and desirable and all that are entirely useless for anything other than sitting still as they fall off too easily (and they can't be adjusted). Since it is nearly my birthday, I thought I might as well add a decent pair to my wish list rather than ending up buying myself cheap and nasty ones in desperation...

All suggestions welcome - what brand(s) should I be looking at?

Cutler & Gross

sleepwhenidie · 24/05/2010 09:10

get yourself to a good opticians that sell nice sunnies and they will help you choose a pair that look great and also fit well (they will adjust them), on your face and on your head. Where do you live?

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:10

Thanks, Bonsoir - I am being educated already as I had never heard of them - they look good, but are they practical and will they tolerate abuse?

I only buy Cutler & Gross - fabulous quality, fabulous designs, very hardwearing and no horrible blingy logos!

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:12

sleepwhenidie - middle of flipping nowhere (UK) - that is part of my concern - I suspect that most opticians within reach would not know what fashionable sunglasses (for the under 60's) looked like if they jumped up and bit them (I exaggerate, but you get the idea...)

Personal favourites of mine are Oliver Peoples - v classy and also unblingy. I recently got a pair of Tom Ford aviators which are great too.

sleepwhenidie · 24/05/2010 09:16

ah - see your problem then. Where are you planning on buying from?

LilRedWG · 24/05/2010 09:17

SS - you may just have to take a trip into Birmingham.

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:21

LilRed - I know - DD and DH love going shopping there, but DS and I come over all country-mouse and want to go home.

Ideally I wanted to be able to add them to an online wishlist in the hope that some nice parent/husband might buy them for my birthday....you are all going to scream at me and tell me I have to try them on now, I know, but I am hopeless at telling whether glasses suit me or not.

LilRedWG · 24/05/2010 09:24

I know what you mean and I'm from there. I hate it too. Pick out a pair of your glasses that you love - show them to DH and send him and DD to B'ham to get a similar but durable pair.

noddyholder · 24/05/2010 09:27

I agree with bonsoir re c and g they are great and not ridiculous £ Have you looked on ebay?

Coderooo · 24/05/2010 09:32

just buy cheap ones you can bin when they break?

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:35

How do I tell if eBay ones are genuine [ignoramus]?

I am not sure that heavy frames suit me. I like these, for example, but I think what I need is something more Oakley-like for practicality.

OP posts:
Coderooo · 24/05/2010 09:36

do you have bad eyes?
are htey prescription?

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:37

Nope. 20/20 (ish).

OP posts:
stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:38

so the only reason not to go for cheap and throwaway is a nagging feeling that more expensive ones should be better protection for eyes.

Coderooo · 24/05/2010 09:38

hmm
i cant rely on myself not to trash em

champagnesupernova · 24/05/2010 09:44

I bought some for THREE QUID from Tesco
Also got some q g ones for £15 from Dotty P.
Yes they are a bit plasticky but after losing my £80 vaguely designer ones (can't even remember which designer as I lost them so blardy quickly after buying them) I don't do spendy sunnies any more.

Added to which some of the Dior/Gucci/D&G ones are equally plasticky.

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 09:48

Am I allowed by the S&B police to like these?

OP posts:
brimfull · 24/05/2010 09:53

Coderooo · 24/05/2010 09:55

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 10:32

Hmmm - TKMaxx - DD and I might pass one of those on Wednesday - I shall investigate (with DD to give honest unvarnished 3yo opinions )

OP posts:
traceybath · 24/05/2010 10:36

I like Tom Ford.

Not blingy at all and very comfortable and light so they don't leave a mark on your face or anything.

Sold in good opticians and department stores.

stealthsquiggle · 24/05/2010 10:55

More good advice. Thank you. Non-blingey definitely good. Ditto comfortable. Now can someone look at the ones I linked to and tell me that they are not too desperately and embarrasingly unfashionable? I really don't think "big" frames suit me...
