maxi dress for the school run, overdressed?

I have bought this dress but in navy which I really like. I don't normally wear dresses, hence the low price tag just in case I decided I hated it or it was too impractical!

I am thinking about wearing it tomorrow, with a denim jacket and some flat sandals. But I am a bit worried about being overdressed for the school run! Most people (unless they are going to work) are in jeans and fleeces/t-shirts.

Do I brazen it out and ignore the "ooh get her, where does she think she's going?" comments, or do I save it for the weekend...?

It's not too cold here today, I'm wearing a short sleeved top and linen trousers in the garden.

yes wear it It's lovely. If anyone ever makes sarky comments at me about "oooh where are you off to today then?" I just smile and tell them I have a hot date with the laundry

Shaz10 · 16/05/2010 16:21

Oh no. Is this really what happens when you drop the kids off? You have to consider your clothing?

starts checking out 8am nurseries

teta · 16/05/2010 16:27

Do you live near me?.The playground at my kids school is exactly the same. Why not add a bit of glamour!.I love to see nicely dressed mums and I hate conformity - so wear it.I have the ditsy print one from matalan and am just waiting for the weather to wear it.I have worn the maxi skirt in the playground but kept on tripping up on it going up tha stairs with armloads of washing and managed to rip it.Hence a different etiquette needs to be employed with long skirts!.

helyg · 16/05/2010 16:33

Ha ha Teta, that's what I'm afraid of as I'm not the most elegant or co-ordianted of people!

If the kids get up early enough I could always sneak in and out first thing and leave them at breakfast club...

Practice this exchange:

Someone:" Ooh, get you. Where are you going all dressed up?"

Helyg: "Meeting your husband for a quicky at a hotel in town. Byeeee!"

helyg · 16/05/2010 16:46

Now that I would love to say!

Ok, I need a maxi dress!!!! Where are the best ones please?

merlin · 16/05/2010 21:26

Sorry! that wasn't meant to be there!!!

Katz · 16/05/2010 21:29

that dress is lovely - can ask what the fit is like? I think i'll do an online shop. are the sizes true? is there any room for a bust?

helyg · 17/05/2010 09:02

I find it comes up pretty big, I have gone down a size in it (even more reason to ) It is in a jersey type fabric, so there is a bit of stretch in the bust. Plenty of room for mine (C/D cup).

thanks - may have to pop over to matalan for a look only have the pink online.

Katz · 17/05/2010 09:49

forgot to add - would it look daft with a vest top underneath?

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 09:56

Rofl @ Plum That is absolutely the reply to give alright!

I hate those 'Oooh look at you all dressed up!' comments. I have a friend who says things like that every blimmin time I venture out of jeans into a skirt It never really feels as though it's meant as a compliment.

I love the dress! What a bargain. Perfect for school run I'd say

helyg · 17/05/2010 09:57

I'm not sure about the vest top, I probably wouldn't personally but that wouldn't mean that it wouldn't look good on you.

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 09:58

Katz - Personally I'd where something over the top rather than something underneath. Might look a bit 'pinafore' with a vest under it. But that's just imo.

helyg · 17/05/2010 10:01

BTW it must look OK, as my 7yr old DS said I looked "pretty" this morning. So who cares about the funny looks in the playground!

Katz · 17/05/2010 10:01

thanks - may just have to go with flesh coloured bras (am large of nork! and most of bras have huge straps!! or i end up with ridges in my shoulders)

BendyBob · 17/05/2010 10:04

Denim jacket over the top is the thing this summer isn't it? (From what I've gleaned from the style threads on mn anyway)

helyg · 17/05/2010 10:06

Denim jacket over it is what I wore (not that I'm a style icon!)

swordinthestone · 17/05/2010 10:10

I think that there are plenty of people around who will comment on what you are wearing. Along the lines of where are you going/what are you doing. I personally find this a bit rude, I don't even look at what other people are wearing and I don't care where they might be going - but people have spoken to me about stuff I have worn (gym gear actually, not a dress). So, if you feel uncomfortable fielding questions then don't wear it. But if you don't mind people saying where are you going etc, then wear it.

Tiggsybabes · 17/05/2010 10:17

It's lovely, I'd wear it & my default mum clothes are jeans. I admire smarter dressed mums on the school run
