Make up and moisturiser recommendations for pale, very sensitive skin?

asktheaudience · 16/05/2010 10:56

Can anyone recommend a good, light moisturiser for teenage DD's highly sensitive skin?

And make up - which brands have good for foundation (mineral?) and concealer for the odd spot on ultra pale skin with freckles? Lots of things bring her out in a rash.

I have found I have to go expensive- clinique has been really good, I have had no reactions to it. I use their moisturiser and eye make up, but still struggle to find a lipstick or gloss that suits me ( very fair) or doesn't make my lips react.

The clinique moisturiser I use is factor 25 which also helps me cope with my zero sun tolerance!

From a palette point of view I think nicola Richards ( girls aloud redhead) has her own line specifically for fair people.

Expensive for a teenager I know but I spent my teens really struggling with make up, so a few bits might be worth it!

asktheaudience · 16/05/2010 11:55

hmm not sure about Clinique - I let her borrow my tinted moisturiser and even that gave her a rash.

Will look at the Nicola Richards range - never heard of her!

I have pale sensitive skin (Irish) and found that Clinique made my skin ache! DH had got me trial sized products of theirs from Debenhams and I found them so sore I gave them to my mum

I use Dermalogica - I think these can only be bought from beauty salons and are similar prices to Clinique things, but I've really liked them. I use their cleansers and day skin cream.

Don't anything with lanolin in it - it's too harsh for people with delicate skin, and can make any spots she has worse.

Also, the more perfumes in a product the harsher it'll be, so try basic clean smelling creams, lotions.

As for make-up, I use Max Factor foundation, don't have any probs with that.

By the way, you must be a very kind mum seeking out advice for your DD

I would try jurlique or darphin skin care ...... after years of trying loads of make up brands I have settled on these 2. I would recommend anything with calendula or camomile for calming skin down. Make up wise Nars and Laura mercier are good....can you tell I am a complete space nk fan????

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 16/05/2010 12:20

I use mainly aqueous cream to moisturise, but find a brand called Lavera (online and in healthfood shops) good also.

Clinique, Clarins, Prescriptives, anything else I've tried makes me tingle and itch.

I've been using House of Colour tinted moisturiser with light powder over the top - but I've only started wearing it regularly in the last couple of years (I'm 46).

I didn't think teenagers wore foundation.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 16/05/2010 12:31

Nicola Roberts, sorry it's called dainty doll but no idea how hypo allergenic it is.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 16/05/2010 12:35

I don't cleanse or tone my skin even at 30 let alone my poor hormone raddled teenage skin, nothing worked and everything made it worse- aching, itching, blotchibg and excema (great!!) Even now I only use water.
It is really expensive but the only way was trying each brand and seeing what suits. It will change again once she enters her 20s!

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 16/05/2010 12:40

Sorry, one more thing, I never found make up remover that didn't give me rashes around my eyes, so now don't use waterproof mascara so I can easily remove it at the end of the day.

Can you tell I have pg brain mush?! Can't remember it all at once, sorry

bran · 16/05/2010 12:50

SeaShells you should try this cleanser. I react to most things but not this. I take it off with a wet muslin or face cloth so it takes off the flakey skin too.

asktheaudience, I'm currently using Bobbi Brown tinted moisturiser and it's fine with no reactions (yet). It's a bit on the expensive side though. As she has young skin then she could try mineral foundation (it highlights wrinkles on my old dry skin ). Lily Lolo sell sample sizes so she can try it cheaply.

MayorNaze · 16/05/2010 12:52

my dsis has sensitive skin but rates elizabeth arden? not cheap though sorry.

moi, am pale looking and heart bobbi brown, though again not pocket money stuff

def heard good things like other poster about the girls aloud chicks range?? avon also have v pale and fairly purse friendly mineral makeup?

asktheaudience · 16/05/2010 13:26

She has freckles which she doesn't like so she uses a mineral sunscreen (she's allergic to chemical ones) and she wants a light foundation to hide them a bit (until she learns to love them...)

Will look at Avon and Lily Lilo. Had hoped to avoid the £££ ranges for now, plenty of time for that when she's earning her own money!

Sunsense tinted facial sunscreen is good for sensitive skin. It's not as ghostly as most mineral sunscreens so she might not need to wear foundation over the top of it.

ImSoNotTelling · 16/05/2010 13:44

I'm allergic to Cinique too! And loads of other stuff, mainly the eyes get red and sore (even if I've applied the stuff miles away) but sometimes my skin comes up too.

At the moment I am using Simple stuff, which i always come back to TBH. It's cheap too which is a bonus! I can even use their eye cream.

ConnorTraceptive · 16/05/2010 13:47

I have VERY sensitive skin. I use a cream from the chemist called Double Base as a moisturiser and I use L'oreal mineral foundation.

I never cleanse my face with any products

ImSoNotTelling · 16/05/2010 13:51

The otehr thing to remember is that sensitivity can develop over time. So something might be OK for a few months and then suddenly will bring you out.

At that point there's no point persevering, even if you have just spent £££ and the tube is full. You need to get rid and move on.

(Voice of experience - I was always too tight to get rid of clinique eye creams and would always try and "come back to them" after a break but it was pointless, it never worked)

Yes to ezcema things as well - connor's post made me think of that as we have had double base for DD. Aveeno is lovely.

teta · 16/05/2010 13:55

I second mineral foundation - an unscented one for young skin.I use aqueous cream to clean makeup off followed by a facial wash.I use clinique or alternatively neutrogena do a good one for sensitive skin.Roc or neutrogens do good tinted moisturisers and they are available at boots and are suitable for sensitive skin.E45 lotion[can also get a sunblock version]or aveeno are good basic moisturisers for the face.Muji do a range of makeup for sensitive skin that is very good but I am not sure whether it is available in the uk!.I have really sensitive skin. I damaged my skin a lot when I was young by using lots of medicated products on it. It took years for me to find products that I wouldn't react to [ still mostly clinique].Hence i think you need to be careful with the products that you buy for your daughter. My kids also react to some clinique products ie suntan lotion so now I use the E45 suntan lotion on them.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 16/05/2010 14:06

Bran, I tried that Akamuti one and it was gorgeous and I was thrilled until my chin started to burn a couple of weeks later. Gutted, but luckily I didn't use it on my eyes.
Seashells, have you tried aqueous cream as a make up remover?
It's the only thing I can put near my eyes (in fact, I had to go without makeup for about three years due to sensistivity - hideous, but I seem to tolerate certain brands now).

ImSoNotTelling · 16/05/2010 14:12

Also for your DD something to remember is that with sensitive skin, less is more.

When I was a teen, if I had some spots or something i would try and zap it with the spot products, i used to scrub my skin with all sort of things, my skin was always red and unhappy and spotty and the worse it got the more I scrubbed.

It wasn't until my 20s that I realised that actually stopping doing anything left my skin happier and calmer than doing anything.

These days i wash my face with plain water and then use simple moisturiser (and eye cream as I'm not a teen any more ) and I only do it every two or 3 days. My skin is clearer and less ruddy and sore than ever before.

Don't underestimate plain water, and gentle is key.

Also there is the oil cleansing method which people talk about on here, never tried it myself though.

rozzyraspberry · 16/05/2010 14:29

I don't have particularly sensitive skin but am very pale. Lilo lolo mineral foundation has some very pale shades - the palest was too pale even for me!! And they also sell tester pots for around £1 which is enough for you to try for a couple of weeks before buying full size.

SeaShellsOnTheSeaShore · 16/05/2010 14:37

Ourlady, I haven't tried anything on my eyes for a long time- the side effects were just not worth it!!

Its tough isn't it- you poor dd op! Hopefully she will start loving her colouring soon. I used that green tinted foundation when I was a teenager as i hated my strawberries and cream complexion and blushing. I must have looked like the green giant I cringe to think of it now!

ImSoNotTelling · 16/05/2010 14:38

Could you get to a dept store - go round the brands and explain your problem and ask for samples for your DD to try and check she is not allergic?

Could take some of the expense out of the trial and error process.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 16/05/2010 15:20

I've been using the oil cleansing method for a couple of weeks now, and it's lovely (feels like you've had a facial when you wake up in the morning), but, as ISNT says, at this age as little interference as possible is probably the best bet.

I have to say < preens >, I've been cleansing and moisturising with aqueous cream for years and people often compliment me on my skin.

Did I say I use aqueous cream?

ImSoNotTelling · 16/05/2010 15:31

seashells I used that green moisturiser when I was a teen too!

the prob (looking back) was that i would scrub my face, then put it on when it was all red, then probably went around for the rest of the day with a green face as the redness went down what a good look

maybe i will try oil cleansing...

asktheaudience · 16/05/2010 16:54

My mum swears by aqueous cream, she has used it for years and her skin is lovely. But it's a bit greasy for DD and she doesn't like the smell. She has a good simple cleanser for when she has been wearing make up.

and @ green foundation! I won't be mentioning that to her... She hates her paleness, poor thing. The irony is that her smattering of freckles give her colour and a healthy glow but she doesn't agree (of course!)

She's very good about not messing about with spots, not that she gets many.

Liz Earle is full of essential oils but for some reason I've never been allergic to it, though I quite often am to other things. Cleanse and Polish is brilliant.
