When did we stop wearing under slips (petticoats)?

DD went to school today in her gingham dress and I noticed that it was see through in the light. It needs an underslip underneath it but I dont know where to get one I havent seen them for years. I couldnt find one on M&S website.

When did we stop wearing them?

Where can I find a girls age 4-5?

I have not seen one for a woman, let alone a little girl in at least 20 years!

All those dresses are a bit see-through, I wouldn't worry about it, you'd only notice if you were trying to notice IYSWIM!

DecorHate · 04/05/2010 18:28

You might still be able to get them for adults but not for children I think - I tried a few years ago for onevto wear under a party dress for my dd - I ended up making one myself - I cut up an old vest for the bodice and bought some white cotton to make the skirt part.

honie · 04/05/2010 18:29

Perhaps Ebay?

CarGirl · 04/05/2010 18:30

I still have a slip, bought about 15 years ago tho!

Not seen little girl ones since I was child must admit. My dds all wear big boxer style pants which helps with the see through dresses and the handstands/cartwheels etc.

Ooo, my mother wears underskirts! And she is non too pleased that DD doesn't wear them under her 'see-through' school dress. I can now inform her that they non longer exist!

Have you tried BHS or school uniform shops?

alysonpeaches · 04/05/2010 18:45

Right thats my prob Im old.

I used to get them for my now grown up daughter from Ladybird (Woolies) with the vest top attached. She used to wear them with her school uniform dress instead of a vest. There is one on ebay but it costs more than the dress!

Im wondering whether to get my mum to run her up a waist slip, but I can imagine it coming down all the time.

If anyone sees one please tell me.

I have an underskirt for myself, but none for the DDs. Well, I have a petticoat, but it is off ebay and I think for dressing up, but I am going to use it as underwear.

I'm a big fan of layers and wrapping up warm-saves on heating for a start. Does my head in when people go to bed in flimsy nighties, no socks or vest, one thin quilt, no blankets, no hot water bottle, then have to whack up the heating so they don't freeze.

Except, obviously, for seduction purposes :D

PrimroseCrabapple · 04/05/2010 18:51

I was wondering this today! same reason school dress a bit flimsy. i always had full slips under my dresses.

i wonder when they stopped being worn.

Fayrazzled · 04/05/2010 18:53

I looked for a full length underskirt recently for my daughter for under a flimsy cotton dress. I tried everywhere (M&S, JL, etc etc) and couldn't find one. All the little girls had them when I was young and I'm only 34!

wigglybeezer · 04/05/2010 18:59

I need them myself because unlined skirts and dresses ride up when you wear woolly tights underneath them. Would be very easy to run some up if you had a sewing machine. I should do some myself. Incidentally little boys have stopped wearing vests too, much to grannies horror. I think schools are better heated than they used to be.

alysonpeaches · 04/05/2010 21:40

Have any of you heard the expression
"Charlies died"
or
"Its snowing down south" ?

For underskirts hanging down?

TakeLovingChances · 05/05/2010 13:30

I bought 2 petticoats about 2 years ago in M&S. I am not ashamed! (biscuit)

I bought above the knee ones, but they also sold full length ones, think they were about £15.

No idea where you'd get one for a child though.

TooPragmatic · 05/05/2010 13:33

me? as soon as I stopped living at home
my mother? still wears 'em

GentleOtter · 05/05/2010 13:36

alysonpeaches - "It's snowing in Paris".

hannahsaunt · 05/05/2010 13:39

I hated wearing underskirts and wasmade to do so all throughs; esp hated them riding up and bunching. Horrid things.

jangly · 05/05/2010 13:43

alysonpeaches -the comeback was always "its bought and well paid for"!

thumbwitch · 05/05/2010 13:47

I'm sure I've seen them in the last few years in Debenhams and places like that, but only half slips. Thing is though, I never could stand them - they were too tight around my legs.

Having said that, they can NOT be hard to make - bit of elastic, piece of sheer material, one seam up the side, one round the bottom and one round the elastic at the top.

I have 4 of my Mum's proper petticoats from the 50s - they're lush!

LouIsOnAHighwayToHell · 05/05/2010 13:50

I bought some online to wear under clingy skirts. Just do a google search and you will find lots.

alysonpeaches · 05/05/2010 17:09

I cant remember when I stopped wearing them, but have been in trousers for most winters so guess it doesnt count. I think when I moved house in 2002 I got rid of the ones I had. I must admit from being about 11 I only wore waist slips. I know my mum still has them though.

When I was a small child that was a different matter. I had an array of "underskirts" as we called them then, I even remember a stiff net one for under a bridesmaid dress which stood out almost horizontally.

After talking to the other mums at school, Ive decided not to bother unless I see one reasonably priced in the shops. I remember that if you got one the wrong length it was such a PITA, apart from the summer of 1977 where it was compulsory to show an inch of borderie anglaise.

I remembered 2 bits about petticoats
" flying low without a licence " If it showed at your hem.

Also the rhyme

Clean and paid for,
washed with care.
if you don't like it
You shouldn't stare!

My daughter ( 25) asked for one of my slips to wear under flippy skirt so that when the wind catches the skirt she is still decent.

bellissima · 05/05/2010 17:19

Oh God I remember that look! The 1977 lacey bit protruding from skirt - which in practice was always skew-whiff and about three inches at the back and nothing at the front. Often the skirt also had a tier at the bottom as well, just to add to that boudoir curtains look. As I recall I got into punk black fairly quickly.

Ahem, to get back to the OP, M&S still sell them and even have squoosh it in figure enhancing slips. But only for adults. Boden sell party skirts with detachable netting underskirts but that's hardly suitable for a school dress.

GentleFloatingVotter · 05/05/2010 17:31

You can still buy them in the old lady shop in Crieff.
There is also a similar shop in County Place, Perth. (They also sell overall aprons)

CMOTdibbler · 05/05/2010 17:42

I often wear a slip - the M&S microfibre ones are great to reduce cling and make a dress skim better
