When did we stop wearing under slips (petticoats)?

DD went to school today in her gingham dress and I noticed that it was see through in the light. It needs an underslip underneath it but I dont know where to get one I havent seen them for years. I couldnt find one on M&S website.

When did we stop wearing them?

Where can I find a girls age 4-5?

I was thinking exactly this. A couple of DD's summer school dresses are that polyester/viscose stuff - not flimsy, but maybe a bit scratchy.

I am on the lookout for these again!!! I bought a pattern to make one but didnt get round to it.

I wear one too - under jersey dresses to stop them riding up. I got mine from M&S.

PlanetEarth · 06/03/2011 20:22

I tried to get one a while ago for DD as granny had given her a long white skirt. It might was well have been completely see-through. No luck in finding one though, and I couldn't be bothered to make one, so she never did wear the skirt.

littleducks · 06/03/2011 20:26

I remember this thread, am taking dd shopping for school dresses with MIL and may need to get her to make me a few slips.....or alternatively I was considering some sort of 'bloomer' style shorts in marching gingham as I think cycling shorts will be too hot (incredibly optimistic about the weather this summer Hmm)

DD will grow up and hate me, wont she Grin

Nagoo · 06/03/2011 20:32

there was a thread about this recently. they do make them but they're not pretty. I'll haver a look when I'm done jigging and try to make a link.

baby jigging sorry.

littleducks · 06/03/2011 20:38

They have them on the US amazon

littleducks · 06/03/2011 20:44

In fact on the UK amazon they seem to have a series from the seller kneestotoes but the sizing seems odd, childrens size 6-20 Hmm and they arent exactly pretty

olivertulliver · 07/03/2011 11:11

Why bother? They're beyond old fashioned and wont your dd hate wearing one, when she'll be the only one doing so?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 07/03/2011 11:17

I would love to get a full length one, dresses skim so much better!

wendihouse22 · 07/03/2011 11:29

I'm wearing one, as I type....along with my whalebone corset and Liberty bodice!!

You CAN still get them. M&S do them or, at least they do in Hereford.

littleducks · 07/03/2011 15:22

Still no links, damn

To the why bother remark.......what do you do about see through dresses? Are some less see through, better material? I haven't bought any yet so would like to know the best place to buy from

HelenBaaBaaBlackSheep · 07/03/2011 23:42

Isn't a woman's slip the same thing as a chemise? That's what I always wear under wool dresses etc

GrimmaTheNome · 07/03/2011 23:48

Ah, I remember that summer when fashion suddenly turned to pretty dresses. (I thought it was 78 though?)

I stopped wearing slips as soon as I could afford lined skirts ... and then never went back to them for unlined summery stuff.

tryingtoleave · 08/03/2011 09:30

I was trying some on just yesterday but they were all massive so I think I will just make myself one.

I wear them, makes me look less fat a nicer line under dresses

eurochick · 08/02/2012 22:29

They still sell them in M&S.

I have a plain black one that I wear with a couple of skirts - one a wraparound to preserve my modesty when the wind blows and another where the lining disintegrated so the slip stops static and VPL.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 08/02/2012 22:33

I've recently started, the Calvin Klein ones from TKmaxx or M&S, can't really pull off dresses without them any more!

hifi · 08/02/2012 22:53

I wore them under my school uniform as my skirt was nylon.took me 2years to make one in sewing class, couldn't wear it as it was too narrow at the bottom and I couldn't walk in it.

I don't think people are as bothered showing their underwear off these days, that's why they are out of fashion.

thenightsky · 08/02/2012 23:42

I got a couple of anti-static ones from Debehams. A 'nude' coloured one for under white/pale summer skirts so my knickers don't show, and a black one for winter dresses and skirts that cling to tights.

joanofarchitrave · 08/02/2012 23:48

tbh i have occasionally worn them about 20 years ago but I so rarely wear unlined skirts in the winter that it's hardly an issue. if it's cold enough to need a slip, wear trousers?

I have never been concerned about other people seeing through my skirt. So what, frankly.

MrsBovary · 08/02/2012 23:51

I had trouble finding flannel petticoats for the children (Victorian websites kept popping up), but eventually found in Tulip and Nettle. They're lovely and so warm in this weather.
Was also advised, if have sewing skills, to make from pattern as there seem to be a few of those around.

I'm 22 and I wear them Blush.

I love them. My mum introduced me to them the other month for a particular dress I had bought that didn't have a lining, and I'm a convert.

M&S for mine.
