Fed up of shaving everyday or every other day, what can I do about it?

If I wax the hairs start to grow after a few days. If I shave they start to grow back that night. And if I shave too often I get bad shaving rash.

I am thinking of getting a home laser machine like the boots one, but I have had laser done professionally at boots on my under arms and bikini area. Unders my arms was hair free for months but came back later. Bikini line was not as good, and I'm thinking a home laser machine cannot be as strong as the professional one can it? The professional one costs around £100,000 apparrently, and the boots home one cost £250. So cannot be as effictive.

I cannot afford to have laser done professionally again at the moment.

I have veet hair removal cream for when I can't face waxing which seems to work quite well.

returningstress · 17/04/2010 22:59

Hair removal creme is just like shaving to me, the hair comes back the next day.

I had IPL on my legs, upper lip and bikini. It was almost a year's worth of treatment with amazing results. But.....its back. Certainly not as strong but back with length. The girl vaguely mentioned I might need a yearly top up to keep the areas under control which I never did. Wishing I had.......

Personally, FWIW, I wouldn't mess around with a home anything.

What areas are you talking about?

My upper lip bothers me bigtime.
My legs I shave every couple of weeks and I just tolerate/hide the in between.

Clary · 17/04/2010 23:00

I like epilating (well not like, but YKWIM) - maybe it is no more effective than waxing but it is free and you do it at home.

Mine you I do get red legs and they do grow back - not days later but soon enough.

Better than shaving tho for smoothness and longer lasting-ness.

Clary · 17/04/2010 23:01

My legs don't grow back (that's how that post reads!) I mean the hairs of course!!!

tethersend · 17/04/2010 23:03

Lower your standards.

Maveta · 17/04/2010 23:04

I feel your pain.. I wax thighs, bikini and underarms - in summer every 4 weeks or so and find that is fine - I don´t stay silky smooth but they are fair and fine so I don´t notice it too much. Lower legs are a pain, in summer really I need to shave every day to keep them smooth - same problem as you re. regrowth and waxing doesn´t keep it enough at bay to wear skirts etc Have also considered laser but the cost puts me off..

I wouldn´t buy the boots machine, sounds like for hair like we have it would just be another expensive experiment.

Granny23 · 17/04/2010 23:04

Leave the blinking hair alone - it grows - when it has reached its natural length it stops growing. If you don't want people to see it wear a short sleeved top and shorts or trousers.

Please give me one GOOD reason why you are putting yourself though this?

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:08

Well, for those who haven't suffered from strong, dark, fast and embarrassing hair growth.....yeah I see your point

LauraIngallsWilder · 17/04/2010 23:09

My advice is - stop shaving

I shave my underarms
I would do something about top lip/chin hair

Other than that who cares..........
My dh (when I had one) wasnt bothered about my leg hair - after all he didnt shave his

MisSalLaneous · 17/04/2010 23:11

I suspect my leg hairs (??) natural length will make me trip and fall over... I'm watching this with interest.

Clary · 17/04/2010 23:12

Those who say don't bother, obviously don't have thick dark hair like wot I do.

Lucky you.

expatinscotland · 17/04/2010 23:15

Too right, Clary, thick, dark, long hairs and white skin.

I don't like it.

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:22

.......and it has nothing to do with how other people see you or other people seeing it or touching it.......

My DP has known me 24 years, all of them with hairy bits and he loves me no matter what. However, I hate my hairy bits and, although I joke about them and am honest with the world about them, it still makes me feel a bit yuk.

Yuk to have a carpet for legs, or a piece of sandpaper. Or to have to say to the kids "yes, swimming, lets do that, but we can only do it tomorrow once I've spent an hour in the bath making myself reasonably presentable".

expatinscotland · 17/04/2010 23:24

I don't like how it feels and I don't like how my skin can't be seen under it, so the first thing that comes to the eye is the hair.

So I do whatever I can to get rid of it.

Acne is natural, too, but it's uncomfortable and most people find it unpleasant on themselves.

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:30

expat, I do acne too!!!! Some folks have all the luck

expatinscotland · 17/04/2010 23:32

i have acne scars, frumpy! not pock marks, thankfully, but flat scars from it.

still get it, too.

we are so lucky!

returningstress · 17/04/2010 23:33

My hair sounds similar to frumpygrumpy, I actually do have to spend an hour in the bath shaving beofr I go go swimming.

My leg hairs are so long and dark they also look like a carpet, which I have been told my a beauty therapist (also a close friend).

The hair makes me feel very unsexy...

expatinscotland · 17/04/2010 23:35

Oh, and I have it on my arms, back, belly, in addition to my legs.

On my face, too. Sideburns.

RedBlueRed · 17/04/2010 23:36

Have you spoken to your Dr about Dianette?

I used to have quite horrible adult acne and after trying a few different potions and pills was prescribed dianette which is a contraceptive pill.

It cleared up the acne but also made my body hair appear to grow slower and lighter. And I too have quite coarse, dark leg hair.

Its a bit of a risky one though so not if you smoke, are over 35 or have a history of blood clots etc.

I'm really glad I used it though - no acne adn less fecking shaving!

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:39

I used to use Dianette, great results with the skin (went to a monthly surge of spots rather than month long) and hair was lessened but not to a huge degree. You can't be on it too long though......I used up my time allowance.

expatinscotland · 17/04/2010 23:39

I have hypertension. Can't take Dianette.

Apparently, even if you don't have a medical condition, you're not supposed to stay on Dianette for every long.

I was able to take it after I had DD1, though. I developed horrible boil type cyst acne on my shoulders and back and it went away fast with Dianette!

PorphyrophillicPixie · 17/04/2010 23:40

Wax and keep at it! I have very dark hair naturally (the perks of being half Iranian, dark body hair and relativley white skin!) and was shaving from the age of 11. So by the time I got to 19 it was growing back within hours and just plain nasty. I started waxing last year and though at first it grew back within a week, now I have permenant bald patches on my legs where it very rarely grows anymore and he hair that is there is considerably lighter! I love it Hoping that within the next tw years it'll be so fine on my legs that I don't need to do anything anymore!

On leaving it, there's no way I'd leave it if I planned to show my legs! I very rarely do show them but I always wax or shave my shins, armpits and bikini areas before swimming. I have stupidly hairy arms too but wouldn't wax those.

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:42

expat, me too. And with age it is increasing. I don't have any on my back yet. But my forearms used to have lots of light hair and now its lots of dark. I have light hairs on the side of my face and newly strong hairs on my chin. Not just the odd one either, lots.

I joke that I am a werewolf but it almost is! Also my skin suffers under the hair. It can be very dry and flaky. As well as the acne.

Deep down, I know its all hormones and imbalances but its all so complex no doctor really wants to go there. Certainly not an NHS one.

DeFluff · 17/04/2010 23:43

I am the same - totally dark, thick hair, pretty much everywhere. Horrendous. Immac type creams don't work on me, the hair disolves but only down to a short stubble which is totally pointless. Lets not even mention the bullying from 20 years ago that still haunts me now (so please keep your 'leave it alone' comments to yourselves, if OP wanted to 'let it grow' she wouldn't have posted the OP would she?!)

I had IPL at a salon. But now although I do have tiny bald patches I also have hyperpigmentation, so looks like a tssh but no hair!! Oh how fantastic!

I have the Rio machine, quite like it but not sure if its making the hyperpiggy worse.

Anyone who knows anything that works please post!

Oh I tried an epilator on legs but they ended up really sore and all spotty and it bloody killed.

Waxing only seems to take about 1/3 of the hair.

Am I a scientific miracle???!!
