Fed up of shaving everyday or every other day, what can I do about it?

If I wax the hairs start to grow after a few days. If I shave they start to grow back that night. And if I shave too often I get bad shaving rash.

I am thinking of getting a home laser machine like the boots one, but I have had laser done professionally at boots on my under arms and bikini area. Unders my arms was hair free for months but came back later. Bikini line was not as good, and I'm thinking a home laser machine cannot be as strong as the professional one can it? The professional one costs around £100,000 apparrently, and the boots home one cost £250. So cannot be as effictive.

I cannot afford to have laser done professionally again at the moment.

I got a full leg and bikini wax every 4 weeks from age 16. The hair on my legs did change but only slightly. I got patches near my ankle where it wouldn't grow at all but it was never a big enough patch to feel great about it.

Swimming with my kids was the biggest hate. They often ask last minute and its a no-no.

DeFluff · 17/04/2010 23:45

Frumpy - I have horrendous pms too, are they all connected then?

I can't use Dianette as have had blood clots. I use Jolen (well Boots equivalent) on the sideburns expat).

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:46

Defluff you and me both hen, you and me both xx.

frumpygrumpy · 17/04/2010 23:47

Yup, I think so. Hideous PMS here. I maybe get a couple of good days in a cycle.

returningstress · 17/04/2010 23:54

I also have hairy arms and light hairs on face but I just bleach them at the moment. But they still look very hairy.

I just want to get rid of the hairs on my legs, underarms and bikini line as they get sore and spotty when I shave alot.

I haop someone has a soloution which wil not cost the earth?

defluff - (good nickname) do you think the rio machine is good for getting rid of the hair? How long does it take to get bald patches?

Ive just done a bit of digging and there is another drug which is used in the treatment of hirsuitism, spironolactone has anyone been prescribed this?

frumpygrumpy · 18/04/2010 00:06

interesting cain, I'll read up on that tomorrow! (just off to bed)

RedBlueRed · 18/04/2010 00:13

Found some more reading under the heading Drug Therapy

I should get to bed too.

Joins Frumpygrumpy & Expat pale white (english rose style) with really dark hair on legs

Unfortunatly i have allergies and can't wax or use hair removal cream as i get spots/really sore legs cause of allergy is unknown! I can't leave the hair grow as the regrowth makes my legs really itchy tis a pain in the arse!!!

However I tried nair on the bikini area today (as I need to do it for c-section in a few weeks) and throught it might be better than shaving for regrowth and stitching!

I've seriously considered lazer treatment but will be on Mat leave then when I go back I have too many other stuff that needs paying for very disappointed to hear it can grow back makes it even less viable option sits waiting for a perfect solution!

DeFluff · 18/04/2010 09:07

Rio machine - I have the second one (think there are 3 now) the first out only does one hair at a time (no good for me!), my one does a patch, say about 1cm ish, not sure about the new machine out.

So while good for small areas it would take ages I think for legs. I've only used on my face and I've stopped now as scared to make the hyperpigmentation worse.

Took say 3 sessions to get (very) small bald patches. Thing is the sessions need to be far apart because of the way hair grows (it explains it all on the Rio website), so I'd say that took 3 months. YOu can use it everyday but because of thehair cycle it wouldnt do you much good.

[waits patiently for miracle solution]

Just curious, what waxes do people who do wax do you find work well? I use veet as it's pretty much the only strip option that you can get readily here but I find that I have to do the same spot two or three times for it to get rid of the hair (knees usually take 5/6 tries!) and I find myself plucking a fair amount out afterwards too...

hazeyjane · 18/04/2010 11:42

Waxing and hair removal creams don't work here either, and give me bad allergic reactions and epilator was almost as bad as pain of breastfeeding!

I find the only thing that works is shaving, Buy the best razor you can, use really foamy soap or shave gel, and moisturise really well. I do end up doing it nearly every day though. If I am going swimming I do it the night before going, the chlorine plays havoc with a freshly shaved leg anyway, IME.

walkthedinosaur · 18/04/2010 11:57

I'm the same as you, very pale skin, long dark hair my legs are much hairier than DH's. I can't shave either, it comes up in a terrible rash, so for years I waxed at a salon, but then had the DC's and couldn't afford it so about five years ago I bought an epilator - it hurt like buggery at first but I pretty much use it daily nowadays just run it up and down my legs and catch the odd hairs and it's absolutely fine. I do my underarms with it too - they last for weeks. I try the bikini line but have to use Veet cream for underneath if you know what I mean, but when they grow back I try and get them with Veet hot wax.

Best of luck I'm always very envious of people with fine blonde hair who say they never bother.

DeFluff · 24/04/2010 12:36

just looked at boots and there are new ipl laser thingys available plus something called no no no. Might be worth looking into.

purplepeony · 24/04/2010 13:37

Being VERY hairy can be a sign of underlying med conditions such as PCOS- showing up as hursutism sometimes.

I wonder if you are being overly sensitive about your hairiness?

Leg hair is fairly easily controlled by shaving- yes, it does grow overnight- but unless you are going tight-less and have you legs on show all day then it's not really an issue- you should be able to shave every other day.

Ditto underarm hair- I'd shave daily if wearing a sleeveless top- but how often do we do that in the UK?

I don't mean to be unkind but could thispossibly be a bitof a psychological issue and not just a grooming one?

jamaisjedors · 24/04/2010 13:46

I waxed for about 10 years and despite having quite fine hair, never felt I could wear a skirt after about a week but had to wait 3 weeks minimum to do it again.

I bought an epilator last summer and it has already paid for itself (bought the most expensive one, a braun wet and dry with a light to show up the hairs).

If you do it once a week it isn't really sore and works well (but I waxed for years so the hairs were probably finer/weaker).

If you forget and leave it 3 weeks or more there is a lot of hair and it is sore and takes AGES - so recently I had it all waxed again to start epilating iyswim.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 24/04/2010 18:36

I have that Braun epilator too, the wet and dry one. Infact there is a new one out that I have seen adverts for. Anyone who has an older model than this, I seriously recommend you get it. It is so much less painful, and I don't get those red pimples or bleeding bits any longer.
I use it at least once a week and I can honestly say that the hair on my legs is weakening. It now looks a lot more like the hair I have seen on friends legs rather than like the bristles on a scrubbing brush!

Facial hair is a nightmare though I wax my top lip and chin every 10-14 days, and bleach the rest. I have to pluck my eyebrows every 3/4 days because they grow so fast.

pp - will all due respect, until you have experienced the level of hairiness that people here are talking about and that I also suffer from you can have no idea.

bruffin · 24/04/2010 18:52

I bought a new braun wet and dry last week and it is a lot less painful than the old ones. My previous on is over 10 years old.
