Good quality boys clothes, but not too 'trendy' - like Boden I guess... where to buy?

Sorry for random title, brain not in gear. Anyhooo I have 2 DSs (soon to be 3)just 4 and 19m and need to get them some clothes. I think the 4 year old is lasting long enough to get decent stuff, and obviously will be handed down twice but I have no idea where to buy. I have eyed up some stuff in Boden (polos and the like) but that's all I have seen. Preferably I don't want anything with skulls etc, and too trendy/fashion-y (brands like Bench, Henleys, timberland etc.) I have trawled the web for toddler jackets like berghaus but cannot seem to find anything. Thanks so much if you can help

I dress DS in John Lewis and Joules, added to with the odd nice thing from Next/H&M/Sainsburys. His light weight coat is a Regatta soft shell - loads of outdoory coats on Little Trekkers

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 11:13

H&M. You can't go wrong there.

Gap if you are rich.

Boden is trendy you know though

Most of DS's tops and t shirts come from kids should be kids

No134 · 08/04/2010 11:16

Kids should be kids

H&M

Jako-O (though the weak pound makes buying in Euros less appealing atm).

Vertbaudet

Du Pareil Au Meme (but ditto re prices in Euros)

French hypermarkets (ditto again)

Ebay (search by brand, eg. Boden, or the really expensive Scandi brands like Okker Gokker or Polarn Y Pyret or whatever it's called.

For proper outdoor wear, Muddy Puddles is the thing, or Little Trekkers.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/04/2010 11:17

I like Gap but have heard bad things about them on MN, which is a shame as they would be bang on. I know Boden is a little trendy but it's practical and not ... 'high fashion' IYSWIM. Like practical casual rather than over stylish.

For outdoor jackets and coats try Mountain Warehouse and Decathlon

StepSideways · 08/04/2010 11:18

A lot of the supermarket baby clothes ranges are actually pretty good these days, i was surprised when i started looking around...

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/04/2010 11:19

These are great! Thankyou thankyou thankyou!

I know what you mean about the Boden style, but really, at those stupid prices it's just not worth it.

I find Primark trousers are good, trousers never last to be passed on to subsequent siblings anyway.

You'll like Kids Should be Kids. Look at the link.

Gap jogging bottom type trousers and sweatshirt hoody things are fab- I get them for dd at a Macarthur Glen outlet so they are reasonably priced.

Boden is such good value price/quality I do buy tons. (and you always get back what you paid flogging it on ebay afterwards)

Agree that John Lewis and Joules are also good.

M and S and Pumpkin Patch are sometimes fab, sometimes minging. You just have to see what they have.

Asda is pretty good.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/04/2010 11:21

Yes, I find Sainsburys quite good but not a huge selection, though great for trousers.

ksbk usually do a discount for MNers, as I think they've grown largely from word of mouth recommendations -- worth checking.

dinkystinky · 08/04/2010 11:23

Pumpkin patch stuff can be good - esp in the sale. Sainsburys trousers good for cheap trousers. Gap good for basics - go dark and stripes if you want them to last through 3 kids though. Kids should be kids are great. M&S good for tshirts/shorts for summer. White company brilliant for pjs.

overmydeadbody · 08/04/2010 11:25

jogging bottom trousers are horrible though, and at Gap prices?!

Rhian82 · 08/04/2010 11:26

I love M&S stuff for DS.

I like H&M as well, but have to admit the last thing I bought him from there had skulls on it

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/04/2010 11:26

I didn't think Boden was too bad (for some things) Sleepsuits are beyond ridiculous price wise but this @ £26 when you think about it is the price of 2 from tesco that don't really last.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 08/04/2010 11:30

Cor the French love their velour sleepsuits! I bought one in France a few years back (for sheer comedy value - was a minging dull lime green) that was "Take me down the moon" on the front I remember the days when it was 64p to a euro

Another vote here for Decathlon for jackets, plain tshirts, fleeces and cheap trainers.

H&M is another good source, at least the sizes from 0 to 7 yr old, then it gets way too "trendy"

Boden and Gap trousers age very well and can be passed down to next child.

Also, things like shorts can be worn for yrs IME!

Patsy99 · 08/04/2010 11:34

I buy similar type stuff to you I think, I don't want DS to look too fashion-tastic or too preppy. I shop mainly at Gap, Boden, John Lewis, White Company (in the sale) and Polarn Y Pyret (latter v expensive). But 2 weeks ago I found a great Berghaus style waterproof jacket from H&M kids range, it was £25 but with £5 off in sale. It comes in blue, green or pink. A similar thing in Polarn Y Pyret was £50 and is just way too expensive for a child's coat imo.

What are the bad things about Gap? Not sure I want to be disillusioned but try to avoid exploitative shopping.

Francagoestohollywood · 08/04/2010 11:34

I recommend Du Pareil Au Meme for sleepsuits/pj

cornsilk · 08/04/2010 11:36

I've tried them all and Boden is the best quality for boys stuff and will last for years without looking faded or losing it's shape. It'snot that trendy - they do plain colours as well as the prints.

startagain · 08/04/2010 11:38

Go to TKMAxx when it's not busy and you have time to go through the racks. Bit hit and miss, but they have lots of polo, quiksilver, pumpkin patch.
Love Joules stuff, but DS is too small yet, think they start at 3/4
