cocktail dress type thing with (black) high heels. so long since I wore anything like this...not keen on bare legs. too pale and thighs a tiny bit wobbly.

Hmm... I would always go for black 120 denier opaque. can't go wrong, covers a multitude of sins!

traceybath · 07/04/2010 19:48

Personally I'd get a spray tan and slap some of this on.

It will apparently give you the legs of a supermodel - well according to articl in the times a couple of weeks ago.

BunnyLebowski · 07/04/2010 20:04

No bare legs unless you're Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley or similar.

Go for foureleven's suggestion. I find that full opaques and heels make my legs look much longer and slimmer!

traceybath · 07/04/2010 20:08

Its spring - too late for opaques I think.

Bunny - do you not do bare legs then?

Alouiseg · 07/04/2010 20:10

Fishnets. They make the pins look shapely and sexy and you could go for a dark grey if black feels too naughty.

BunnyLebowski · 07/04/2010 20:11

Not if my thighs are going to be on show as OP suggests tracey

Knee length dresses and below I'm fine with bare legs and a shave tan.

traceybath · 07/04/2010 20:12

Good point Bunny - I'd just assumed just above knee but perhaps we're talking knicker skimming - in which case - yes to opaques.

janeite · 07/04/2010 20:14

I would say opaques. If it's for night-time I don't think it matters if it's spring. No to fishnets if the dress is above the knee.

hatwoman · 07/04/2010 20:37

it's definitely not knicker skimming. what sort of lady do you think I am? I've always been conscious though that a knee length dress can show acres of cellulite thigh when you sit cross legged (and I've always wondered whether there are hundreds of women who don;t realise this...or if they realise but don;t care). do full opaques look ok for black tie do you think? or are they a bit informal/casual? (I'm clueless)

this is the dress

MayorNaze · 07/04/2010 20:40

where are you going? i would go for coloured opaques myself

MayorNaze · 07/04/2010 20:41

oh that is a lovely frock

janeite · 07/04/2010 20:43

That is gorgeous. Purple tights? Tiny fishnets or herring bone could be nice. Nude fishnets?

hatwoman · 07/04/2010 20:45

thanks! took me ages to pluck up the nerve to spend the money - quite an extravagance. but as normally I spend very little on clothes (and certainly substantially less than dh does on outdoor equipment/gadgets/ski-ing and other typically male stuff) I treated myself. really looking forward to wearing it.

OP posts:
nickschick · 07/04/2010 20:46

zebra print

MayorNaze · 07/04/2010 20:49

oh it will be well worth the money i should think. i didn't realise that was the mental image that i had of an "LBD" til i saw that pic!

what accessories are you planning?

hatwoman · 07/04/2010 20:51

I tried it on a few weeks ago and loved it. then didn;t do anything about it until it was too late to order on-line. dh was passing the shop yesterday, so I got him to pick it up. he hasn;t said a word about the price. bless. the annoying thing is that perhaps he thinks it's what I normally spend. last dress I bought was 7.99 from Tesco.

Its a lovely lovely dress.

Slap on some fake tan tonight and try it on tomorrow with bare legs - I bet it will look fine.

I think black opaques will look wrong with it. All the fash mags were showing loads of spotty/dotty black sheer tights - could be worth a go. Although I always fear with things like that - I'll just look as though I'm stuck in the 80's rather than cool in an alexa chung way.

When is the event?

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 08/04/2010 07:25

Coloured opaques

I wore purple tights with a similar combo at Christmas and it looked fab. They were dark enough not to be very loud, but looked great being so different from standard black tights. And, being opaque, hid a multitude of sins

KnottyLocks · 08/04/2010 07:33

The dress is lovely. Lots of different tights here. I'd be tempted to go with a light pattern on a sheer black backgroud or as the dress is such a classic one, maybe a seamed stocking? They make tights with seams too if you're not comfy with stockings.

cyb · 08/04/2010 07:42

I would either go bare bronzed leg or black opaques.

I hope your shoes have a hidden platform, they would look great with a dresslike that

I have the same dillemma soon with a frock...I have good shaped legs but ravaged by stilton coloured veins...

I was wondering about Sally HAnsen leg make up spray...but dont wnat to look like I'm wearing American tan tights

traceybath · 08/04/2010 07:44

Cyb - you have to try the stuff I linked to - it is apparently amazing. This stuff.

Do you have your party dress yet?

traceybath · 08/04/2010 08:59

Orange sounds good!

Jajas - think I'd go for the clear stuff. Went to a wedding do a couple of weeks ago and had a spray tan the day before - well worth it!
