cant affors a big wedding especially as we are going on hols the same day..
i dont like dresses as my calves are huge, and also im a size 16 so dresses do me no justice...
would it be wrong to wear a trouser suit?
its going to be a very small wedding with me, do and 3dcs then pils.

mil is hassling me to buy a dress as she is the traditional type, but im not overely keen

of you can wear a trouser suit if you want to (my mum got married in a green trouser suit )

If you really won't feel comfy in a dress then don't wear one. But maybe get yourself a lovely top to wear with the suit. And don't get black so you don't look like you're going to a job interview.

tethersend · 06/04/2010 22:02

It's your wedding, you can wear whatever you like

Lionstar · 06/04/2010 22:02

My Mum did - but it was in the 60s

I did. A beautiful pale grey one. I wish I could still fit into it. I agree with Norkily - no black!

Surprise · 06/04/2010 22:06

How about a maxi dress instead? There are loads out there at the moment? It's what I'm probably going to do (bit of a jeans girl myself). The elongate your body, and cover up all the dodgy bits! Monsoon have some good ones, as do Wallis. That said, wear trousers if you feel more comfortable - it's entirely up to you!

em83 · 06/04/2010 22:09

or a funeral norkillychallenged
agree monsoon have some lovely things... im useless at matching things though.
also not keen on the trouser suit idea as such but maybe trousers and a top as suggested by supersal what kind of top im thinking grey trousers???

Wish I had! Think Bianca Jagger when she married Mick, such a good look.

Go for it

cyteen · 06/04/2010 22:11

Of course you can! My friend wore a cream trouser suit to another friend's wedding, accessorised with a white trilby and big heels - she looked amazing, and she wasn't even the bride

choosyfloosy · 06/04/2010 22:11

i wore a dark bluey grey velvet tunic and soft trousers to my first wedding. It's still the loveliest outfit I've ever owned, I felt amazing in it, and actually better than I felt in the white dress I wore to my second wedding. Wear whatever feels special and comfortable to you - of course!

I did - a great pair of long wide leg, very fine blue and white stripe trousers, a gorgeous white jacket and a great pair of pink heels. I felt great and have been able to wear the outfit (and the component parts) again and again.

em83 · 07/04/2010 08:24

thanks for all the answer feloow mumsnetters....
im def thinking trousers and a nice top, the maxi dresses are quite nice but they are rather bold and too funky for me...

Monsoon sometimes have shalwar kameez (sp?) type outfits in their wedding section. Embroidered tunics and trousers to match but without the embroidery, in cream or off-white.

jemart · 07/04/2010 13:03

If you are sure you won't look back in twenty years and regret it, then go for it.

KristinaM · 07/04/2010 13:20

i agree that a beautiful trousers and top will look much better than a trouser suit

i have just reviewed my own wedding photos for you - i didnt wear trousers but lots of the female guests did.

3 of my SILs wore trouser suits in black, cream and blue and they all look a bit officey TBH. My Bf wore very floaty wide legged trousers, killer heels, a tight fitted top, a pashmina draped around her shoulders and a big hat. she looked fab. helps she is tall and slim

so i conclude that trouser suits are not good unless you are sure you will look glam and not as if you are going for an interview

what about these dress agencies that sell "worn once" evening and occasion wear? its worth a visit.

i woudl also make appointments TODAY with the personal shoppers in John Lewis and Debenhams. its free and they are VERY GOOD

em83 · 07/04/2010 17:01

please advise with links if possible any great outfit ideas as im hopeless
are we talking wide leg trousers? what kind of tops etc ???

Lastyearsmodel · 07/04/2010 17:20

What height and shape are you? Big/small on top/bottom half? Big/small chest? Long legs or long back?

em83 · 07/04/2010 19:14

erm, im 5'2w and a size 16 top and bottom.... 36d chest, only part of me that is thin is my arms

OP posts:
IronRichSpinach · 07/04/2010 19:54

Go to John Lewis and get a personal shopper. Please, I think it's the perfect answer as they'll be able to find a variety of things that fit the general brief.

Lastyearsmodel · 07/04/2010 20:01

I can't claim any style credentials, and am only used to dressing me (big and tall) but I would love thin arms!

Would you consider something like this? with a shrug or bolero cardi for if it's chilly?

No idea what colours suit you, or if you wanting white or cream, but what about a dress with a low neckline to make the most of your 'assets', below calf-length with fabuous shoes? this-ish?

I'm most probably way off, but was only thinking today how DP and I should get round to getting married, but how I'm nervous of finding the right dress, so I wanted to say, just go out a try on a few things, and book that personal shopper like the earlier poster said. Size 16 is normal!

em83 · 07/04/2010 20:07

i was looking at that lime green dress lastyearsmodel but the coloue puts me off.
also the other dress is no good as my calves are HUGE so has to be ankle or maxi if a dress.
def going to see a personal shopper , im in newcastle and the metrocentre offer this service...worth a try i think .

choosyfloosy · 07/04/2010 20:33

sensible to see a shopper, but maybe bear these trousers in mind i LOVE fwm stuff

this jacket would be nice? maybe with a silk camisole underneath?

KristinaM · 07/04/2010 21:35

excellent!! you must phone house of fraser and debenhams tomorrow to make appointments with their personal shoppers. they get booked up quickly, especially as wedding season approaches

please report back

NorkilyChallenged · 07/04/2010 21:40

Yes yes report back!
