how much of a faux pas is it to wear white to a wedding?

I'll be 30 weeks pregnant and the only dress I can find that I like is a white dress, I would accessorise with colour (shoes, bag, hair piece etc). Never occured to me pre- MN that this is A Bad Thing but a few threads had me thinking {grin}

Phew, mummee, well, its up to you. Personally it reminds me of the dresses worn by guests when I watched My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding...

I just think its nicer to leave a little SOMETHING to the imagination--much sexier and more attractive.

Restrainedrabbit · 29/03/2010 16:54

Lynne you are confusing me with somone else, I'd look like meat stuffed in a sausage if I wore that!!

I also think sexy is leaving something to the imagination, so many ways to show you have an amazing figure without wearing a short revealing dress (IMHO )

restrainedrabbit - that isabelle oliver dress is beautiful - i say go for it. you are pregnant - its always hard to find things you feel good in (well thats what i was like anyway) when you are that pregnant, so i am sure you could be forgiven for wearing it.

notasize10yetbutoneday · 29/03/2010 16:59

That is a beautiful dress OP but I really do think it is very bridal.

HollyGoHeavily · 29/03/2010 17:01

Rabbit - it's a lovely dress but I think that it is a little bit too bridal to wear to a wedding.... Long and white is a bit of a no-no unless you are the bride!

lynnexxxo · 29/03/2010 17:02

Sorry restrainedrabbit, I was getting mixed up!

Lovely dress but is a bit bridey. Can you not get another colour?

LittleWhiteWolf · 29/03/2010 17:13

Restrained, sorry I completely forgot to give my opinion on your thread, so distracted was I by that scrap of material.

I really like it and I bet you'll look all earth mothery and gorgeous in it...but it IS white and long...
could you dye it? Or is that too much faff. I reckon I'd've let off any pg mates (especially 30 weeks pg mates) if they wore that to my wedding. Depends on the bride really and she's the only one you need worry about.

Wordsonascreen · 29/03/2010 17:24

OP if it was any colour other than white it would be perfect.

Sorry.

Well, it couldn't be clearer than this, that precise dress is classed as the best wedding maternity dress by Marie Claire.

www.marieclaire.co.uk/fashion/best/10088/1/4/10-best-maternity-wedding-dresses.htm l

I think you are pushing it, and someway sure that if you ask the bride what she thinks she would say "it's ok", as it is polite to do, while she is seething inside.

Mongolia · 29/03/2010 17:35

There are some nice party dresses here:

DilysPrice · 29/03/2010 17:41

Seriously, I wouldn't. White can be OK for a wedding if covered up with a big coloured wrap/jacket, but not that length.
I bought a short white dress to wear to my post wedding party and was told solicitously by the shop assistant that "Oh, no you couldn't wear white to a wedding" - I had to reassure her that it was my wedding before she'd sell it to me.
On the other hand I also go to great lengths to avoid wearing black to weddings, and every other guest is always wearing black, so I'm clearly over picky.

happyland · 29/03/2010 18:14

Could you dye it? Is is gorgeous but does look like a maternity wedding dress. Saying that, if it were my wedding and people turned up wearing white or cream I really wouldn't be bothered at all.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 29/03/2010 18:38

Lots of people wore white to my wedding and I didn't care at all but sorry OP that dress basically is a wedding dress.

Restrainedrabbit · 29/03/2010 20:05

I have seen the Picchu dresses but they are v clingy I find also we have little money so it needs to be cheap (like the IO one on Ebay).

Sigh.

Romanarama · 29/03/2010 20:29

I wore a long cream dress covered in giant pink flowers to a wedding once. It really didn't look like a wedding dress but unfortunately the bride was wearing a really boring and unbridal outfit (sort of beige skirt and jacket combo) and lots of onlookers asked me whether I was the bride. It was really embarrassing. I have been much more careful ever since.

RamblingRosa · 29/03/2010 20:37

I wouldn't do it.

rimmer08 · 29/03/2010 20:38

i would never wear white to a wedding it the biggest faux par you can make IMO. sorry.

Restrainedrabbit · 29/03/2010 20:39

I love this but not the price:

OP posts:
KristinaM · 29/03/2010 20:42

sorry that dress is not suitable, its way too bridal

matildamum · 29/03/2010 20:53

The short version of the Tiffany Rose dress you like is on ebay in a 12-14 here...would it be any good? Is very pretty fabric. I think the wearing white to a wedding thing is very tricky. Personally it wouldn't have bothered me one jot, but then my wedding dress was the full princess/theatrical, cathedral length train affair so unlikely anyone else would've been mistaken as the bride . Like Roman says, it might be more of an issue if she's not going for a typically 'bridey' dress...do you know her well enough to sound that one out?

Restrainedrabbit · 29/03/2010 20:57

Matilda Thank you for the link, I prefer longer dresses (rubbish legs ). The groom is one of my DHs closest friends so I don't know her very well, but I could sound her out she has been helpful on a number of other queries regarding accommodation etc.

I must be v fussy as I find it so hard to find reasonably priced maternity occasion dresses that I actually like

It is rather bridal. Do you have to wear a dress? I went to a wedding when I was about 30 weeks too and wore a really lovely pair of white linen trousers and fabulous top. I know not everyone is a trousers girl though

Mongolia · 29/03/2010 21:12

What about this:

matildamum · 29/03/2010 21:19

What about a maxi dress, not necessarily a maternity one? Next have got loads here. Some of these could look fabulous with a bump.
