Hello, Anybody been to the Ritz for afternoon tea?? If you have what did you wear?

My MIL gave my husband and I a voucher for afternoon tea at the Ritz for christmas.

I really dont know what to wear, MIL says I should wear my 1950s wedding dress by Candy Anthony , the dress cost a fortune, so I would like to get more wear out of it.. Im wearing it in my photo.. (in my profile)

Im even contemplating dying it black?? (Candy Anthony said this would be fine to do)

My waist belt is leopard print as is my skull cap veil., and my petticoat is black.

Should I hide my tattoos with a bolero???

would this be tooo OTT for the ritz?

I am 50s mad, so what ever I wear will be vintage, or vintage inspired?? Ive also have to shift a stone to get in the dress again!! any opinions would be greatly appreciated! x

Never been to the Ritz but that is a gorgeous dress. It says they have a strict dress code so I would definitely bring something to cover the tatts.

toodles · 24/03/2010 13:55

Have no idea whether the dress is appropriate for The Ritz but just wanted to say what a beautiful dress it is. You look beautiful in it. Hope somebody comes along soon with some advice for you.

Pennies · 24/03/2010 13:58

Def cover the tats.

Lovely dress. Maybe a little OTT though. When I went there were people there in quite staid formal wear, but you do look utterly glamourous in the dress so go for it.

LeopardSkinPillBoxHat · 24/03/2010 14:35

Oh thank you so much for your kind compliments!!!....prehaps if I wear a less 'poofy' petticoat, and a cardigan, it might look less ott? thanks peeps x

www.lovemissdaisy.com/1950s-Vintage/Sweet-vintage-1950-39-s-plaid-tea-dress/prod_893.html

Something like that would be lovely, with killer black peeptoe's, accessories, and a small fascinator

SheWillBeLoved · 24/03/2010 14:47

Hoorah for crap links try again!

southeastastra · 24/03/2010 14:49

slightly ott, but it's nice! i went a month or so ago. i wore trousers but wish i'd glammed up a bit more. one bloke was in black tie!

LeopardSkinPillBoxHat · 24/03/2010 14:56

You're welcome!

101handbags · 25/03/2010 10:27

Wow you look amazing in that dress. Far better to be a little overdressed than underdressed. Wear it - how often do you get the chance? I agree with other posters about covering your tattoos. I wore a nice dress for tea at the Ritz a couple of years ago...but nowhere near as nice as yours

Tobermory · 25/03/2010 10:31

Lovely, lovely dress,
Wear it!

Whilst you may be the most glam woman there, the surroundings are so oppulent you wont feel overdressed!

animula · 25/03/2010 10:40

I went for afternoon tea somewhere. Was it the Ritz?

I know it's a bit of a cliché, but not all of the waiters were heterosexual; in that dress, I suspect you will find that your service is attentive.

Lovely dress.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 25/03/2010 11:02

How beautiful.
As you say, a smaller underskirt would make it less '50s, and maybe a boxy jacket might look nice.
Have you thought of a different colour from black - emerald green, navy or purple maybe?

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 25/03/2010 11:03

Oh, and maybe a little spotty silk scarf!

MaineGirl · 25/03/2010 11:46

I love your wedding dress. If you really want to dye it, then something other than black would be good, dark purple etc. i think it would be perfect with a cute boxy jacket or shrug type affair, and a less full petticoat.
i really like your tattoos too, but the ritz is probably somewhere to cover them up as its still quite formal and staid.
Have a fabulous time.

purplepeony · 25/03/2010 13:15

Have been to Ritz for tea a few times. Be careful that you do not look OVER DRESSED. Honestly, most people wear almost anything. I have been in summer and wore a summer dress- nothing special- and in winter when I wore black skirt and top with heels. Another time I wore a silk-mix shift dress with high-heeled boots.

If you dress up too much you will look out of place.

The only things they do not allow are jeans and trainers.

sweetheart · 25/03/2010 13:15

That dress is beautiful but I think too OTT for afternoon tea even at the Ritz. I've been there a couple of times and it's mostly understated posh.

DebiNewberry · 25/03/2010 13:21

I went with my mama a long time ago, it is a very pretty room, but I don't think you'd need to get as dressed up as that.

What about a pencil skirt, heels, tight cardi with your belt, and then wear your little veil?

I think you should keep your wedding dress intacto, it is beautiful. You look hot.

purplepeony · 25/03/2010 13:22

I'd say that dress was more for evenings/proms/posh garden party/ladies day Ascot. It is too dressy for tea. sorry- you look lovely in it but it would be a head-tuner.

IngridFletcher · 25/03/2010 13:24

It is a beautiful dress but too much for tea at the ritz. I wore a black maternity wrap dress and my sister wore smart office wear and we were not underdressed.

Waterduck · 25/03/2010 13:34

I agree with Sweetheart. My DH took me to the Ritz for lunch as a treat on our honeymoon. I wore an evening dress from Monsoon with a wrapover-type front like your dress & bolero (Your dress is gorgeous btw!!), and felt a little over dressed. I would definately cover the shoulders & tatoos. It is much more smart-trousers/skirt-long sleeve-type posh!! Have a lovely time - the food is delicious!!!!

pagwatch · 25/03/2010 13:42

It is very beautiful but you would have to dress it dwon a bit tbh. If it were less pouffy and with a cardy and flats then maybe.
It is very elegant surroundings but the dress code is still day wear. I wore a silk tea dress.

If you wear anything to over the top you will look a little gauche and that can be embaressing. Evening wear during the day is wag type behaviour and showing your tits over tea is the preserve of Jordan and ex-hookers.
