Shoes are important right? Someone who never invests in shoes and never thinks about their footwear never looks good do they?

I'm thinking this year I will just wear all the same clothes I already own, not buy anythign new, but actually invest in nice shoes to go with my clothes, and actually think about footwear more and getting over my fear of drawing attention to my feet, becasue scruffy old worn in conservative shoes do nothing for one's image do they?

Think I need to get over my phobia of wedges for a start, and gladiators, and sockless feet...

Does it sound like a good idea?

Sunshineyellow how about the maryjane style sketchers that jareth linked to at the begining of the thread?

Thumbwitch how do you wear pointy shoes? Whenever I try on pointy shoes I feel really silly, like they look ridiculous on me, and wouldn't they just make big feet look bigger as they have to extend out further?

i've been wearing a pair, similar to thesefor 2 years now!i wore them almost everyday during my pregnancy too. very, very comfy. i don't care what others think.

SunshineYellow · 19/03/2010 10:53

OMDB - Thanks, just had a look. Could you really wear them wih socks ? Wouldn't that make me look like a big schoolgirl?
I hate shoe shopping

overmydeadbody · 19/03/2010 11:03

Sunshine I am the wrong person to ask.

I wear mine with socks, but with bootcut trousers the socks don't really show. I tended to wear bright coloured socks but not pattrned ones.

I probably looked silly to some people.

OK - i dare you to find me a pair of shoes that 1. fit and 2. are comfy
Need something smart - preferably black - that can be worn with smart trousers and skirts.
BUT I have size 8 feet with horrific bunions - and rest of foot is very narrow and flat. So I need something wide at teh top, with a strap so it can be held on and that does not leave too much space at top of foot!
Cannot wera heels due to bunions.
My present shoes are 1 pair of trainers, 1 pair of Ugg style boots and a pair of black M&S foootgloves bought recently to fit above criteria but which give me blisters.
Good luck!

OMDB - . A case of the blind leading the blind then? Why weren't we taught this important stuff at school?

I was hoping I could let a little style creep in. Maybe I am just destined to fail S&B...

overmydeadbody · 19/03/2010 11:21

Definately blind leading the blind

haggis hopefully some stylish shoe expert will be on to help you! As I daren't even try.

Nike do a gladiator sandal - it was mentioned in the Times yesterday as a comfortable practical sandal - I hear you about the bunions - I have the same and I quite liked wearing gladiators last year to hide the offending bits.

Here they are (if the link works) - they look a bit clunky but maybe they need to be tried on:

I live in Accesorise seagrass flipflops all summer. Heels now and then.

In winter its boots, converse or work shoes.

Spending hundreds and hundreds of pounds on shoes is an alien concepr to me. I'll spend £100 on a good pair of winter boots that will last but I think even my wedding shoes werent much more than £100.

IMoveTheStars · 19/03/2010 12:42

Sunshine yellow - I wear my current skechers with socks, but only ever with jeans. they're fine without socks with skirts though (not that I ever wear skirts really)

EllieMental · 19/03/2010 12:57

for someone with no interest in 'proper' shoes, I seem to have a huge selection
I have3 pairs ballet flats, red, black and metallic (all were under £10)
3 pairs of wellies (green - for garden), pirate (for festivals)and lined (for winter)
3 pairs knee length flattish black boots some Big and funky, other smarter for work (which I live in for winter - all less than £40 in sales or charity shop)
1 pair brown suede pointy knee-length boots (£2 charity shop)
1 pair of heeled, cuffed, piratey boots in mossy green (given by a friend)
2 pairs fake converse (one red, one green)
1 pair funky sort of flip flops but more substantial for walking (£20 in clarkes sale a couple of years ago)
2 seagrass flip flops for summer
1 pair of sort of funky mary janes (£10 in last year's Clarke's Sale)

I'm sire there are more

deaddei · 19/03/2010 13:54

I am a size 9 and narrow. It's a nightmare.
Next size 9 are too small.
I buy online from Tall Girls or from After 8 in Kingston- average price £75 a pair!!!
I LOVE shoes, and wish more stores catered for my size.
I stick to ballet flats, Converses (their size 9 is perfect), Birkenstocks and boots- got a lovely pair in Duo, but paid £190!!!

lotster · 19/03/2010 14:03

I bought this fab pair of gladiator sandals from Bullfrogs last summer. I'm the kind of person who has to travel or walk any serious distance in trainers, or suffer - until this pair! They are soooo comfy and look quite glam even though they're flats, especially with black, and can do evenings too.

Cannot wait to wear them again. Had to lie to the bloke that they were £30 as I would never spend £50 on sandals usually and they seemed far too embellished for my usually simple style, but they are like magic slippers once you have them on

haggisaggis · 19/03/2010 14:09

Oh - I forgot - I do have a pair of smartish sandals I bought last year from Clarks - they have the straps in the right places so my bunions can hang out. Tres glamerous!

June2009 · 19/03/2010 15:51

I recently bought this and this.

both lovely and comfy.

overmydeadbody · 19/03/2010 17:36

Well I feel quite excited, I went to T K Maxx earlier and bought some patent hot pink Birkinstocks, with just the one strap over them, and they are sooo comfy but the strap is just right to hide the hideous bunions and they where only £20! I am now looking forward to some good weather and an excuse to wear them!

Thanks everyone for convincing me. I know birkies aren't exactly the height of fashion but they are better than cheap flip flops for the summer right?

It's ironic that the most expensive shoes I buy, at £80 a pop, that have to be replaced yearly, are also the damn bastards responsible for the bunions GGGGrrrrrrrr

nice

my bloody shoes didn't arrive today, despite paying for one day delivery. grr

PerArduaAdNauseum · 19/03/2010 20:38

Oh tut.

Can't believe you people haven't found barefoot shoes yet. Pair of ballerina-ish pumps, thin sole, walking on gravel's like a foot massage - bliss...

But you really do have to buy one size up for some barking reason.
