Shoes are important right? Someone who never invests in shoes and never thinks about their footwear never looks good do they?

I'm thinking this year I will just wear all the same clothes I already own, not buy anythign new, but actually invest in nice shoes to go with my clothes, and actually think about footwear more and getting over my fear of drawing attention to my feet, becasue scruffy old worn in conservative shoes do nothing for one's image do they?

Think I need to get over my phobia of wedges for a start, and gladiators, and sockless feet...

Does it sound like a good idea?

I have to wear the two-strap ones as I can't keep the one-strappers on. They aren't quite as stylish, even though I wear the patterned ones . I have rheumatoid arthritis but can walk comfortably all day in them, and even use a well-loved pair as my house shoes. Love 'em!

Mookymoo · 18/03/2010 17:47

Still in love with a pair of Blowfish ankle boots I bought end of last year, but I've worn them to death and have nothing to replace them with now

Mookymoo · 18/03/2010 17:50

Once you know your size in Birkie's there's a rainbow of colours and styles on Ebay. Which is good if you're resembling a space hopper at 25 wks like moi, and don't want to stamp around shoe shopping!

I used to love shoes, but since I got PG & had DD (now 19months) I have barely worn anything but trainers, flip-flops & Ugg boots! I could do with retraining myself to walk in heels! I also hate showing my feet & they could do with a little TLC before the summer & I inflict them on everyone. I think even if you wear heels they should be comfortable & IMO cheap shoes generally do more damage. Worth investing in decent ones that you will wear to death & that will love your feet!

overmydeadbody · 18/03/2010 18:45

You lot have convinced me. I am getting some birkies.

Next hurdle will be to embrace heels

MookyMoo those Shelleys shoies are just a bit too out there for me, and besides, there are no prices on the website which means they are expensive!

I like to look at the ankle cuff ones, and, with my cankles, dream!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 18/03/2010 18:53

I live in Converse.

I did brnach out this week and have purchased some Dunlop Green Flash.

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 18:59

Sorry to rain on it but I had ONE pair of birkenstocks a long time ago and found the little arch support thing really painful...probably have got odd feet, but do try before you buy. Also they were vegan leather stuff and it broke after a couple of months - sent them back!

sausagepastie · 18/03/2010 19:00

Oh and there are some birkenstocks on tkmaxx online...limited selection but anyway! they've got a few.

RuthBlackett · 18/03/2010 19:10

Oh! Is Franny still in her eternal quest for turquoisey green shoes? The ones OMDB linked to may just be right for her...

overmydeadbody · 18/03/2010 19:26

lol at the vegan leather!

Many many moons ago I did own a pair of men's old school brown leather birkies (before they got all colourful) and they where lovely and comfy, if a bit lentil-weavery.

Did I mention I have cankles too? In fact, my calves are thicker than my thighs which is why boots are my friend...

Re ballet flats, I bought a pair of silver leather ballet flats in Gap last week for £25. They are comfortable like slippers, and I am sensitive of foot. So comfortable that I am now hunting another pair. And they are nicely cut around the toe - not too high and not too low. Perfect.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 18/03/2010 19:54

Must try those Gap ballets - I too find it hard to find a pair that don't either slip off at the back, or stub my big toe at the front.
Re the Birkies: Accessorise have a jewel-covered thong version with the birkie-type footbed, good for holiday evenings maybe, and although I haven't tried them yet, I'm hopeful that they'll be camouflage for my hideous gappy big toes.
My DD wears those Hush Puppies in black for school. She's 12.

Op, if you like to wear pretty tops and shoes with bows on, maybe that's a starting point in finding the style you like - so start by trying on as many pretty, feminine shoes as you can and see if that's a look you feel suits you, then stick with it if it does.

Divatheshopaholic · 18/03/2010 20:08

Im in search of comfy but trendy shoes, hence i started thread. Sadly people seem to recommend crocs, uggs, birkies, doc martins, vans
I tried Ugg casual but they werent as good as i expected. I like heeled shoes, but i dont like Fly London. I dont know MN seems like them, i think its something to do with cod buying pair of FL YAzz shoes.
Not keen on ballet pumps either. I saw some lovely Opening ceremony wedges on Asos, but they are priced over 200pounds

overmydeadbody · 18/03/2010 20:43

Good advice OurLady, I will try that. I am drawn to pretty things but sometimes feel I am too oldto be girlie and 'pretty'

"Give a girl the right shoes she will conquer the world" No prizes for guessing how I feel about shoes

ProcessYellowC · 18/03/2010 21:29

I am a size 9/10

Ssometimes I feel like the thread title is true. Shopping for shoes gets depressing when you get smirks from the shop assistants if you ask if they do shoes in my size. I live near London and they have a few "larger feet" shoe shops on Crispin Street....but I found all those shoes too large!

lotster · 18/03/2010 21:41

Back in my telly days Jimmy Choo promised me a pair of bespoke shoes. Never got them..

Process you are in good company with the likes of glamorous laydees Uma Thurman, Tyra Banks, Nicole Kidman, Gina Davis and Paris Hilton! Just read Jackie O was a UK 10 too!

I'm a 7 - the size guaranteed to have "just run out" for some reason

Also 5ft 9 and feel a bit trannie-ish in too high heel shoes, so many nice ones around at the moment, wish there were some decent mid-heel versions.. Roll on summer when it doesn't matter.

SpeedyGonzalez · 18/03/2010 22:14

I take care over the way I dress and would love to be able to carry this into my footwear...sadly my feet are too big to give me much choice.

OurLadyOfPerpetualSupper · 18/03/2010 22:20

Don't know how old you are but if 'pretty' is your style it doesn't have to mean a short lacy dress a la Miss Selfridge - the look translates for all ages, as per that dress!

cariboo · 18/03/2010 22:32

I need to know that I can run if I have to - a leftover from my years in a big city & from being a mummy of toddlers. Shoes have to be flattering and comfortable. But barefoot is the best. With a pedicure.

SunshineYellow · 18/03/2010 23:18

Can I gatecrash please?

I have birkies for the summer which I love. However, I get really cold feet, so want some shoes I can wear with socks, that will go with jeans and pretty tops. Help!! I do a long school run, so need to be able to walk in them too

thumbwitch · 18/03/2010 23:49

You are right and they do make a difference to how your outfit looks - but I can't be doing with spending stupid amounts of money on a pair of shoes that are horribly uncomfortable just for the look of the things.

I have several pairs of shoes but the most expensive are a nice pair of ankle boots that were in the sale at £80 - and even that hurt me a bit! I don't do very high heels, max 2". I don't do mary janes or squared ends (big feet, look like barges). I hate flats, the wedges are all too high and I can't walk in stilettos.

I am not a good shoe shopper!! Give me a reasonable 1.5" court or kitten heel, or even those ones that are narrow viewed from the side but wide viewed from the end, pointy toes and decent heel/ankle support and I'm fine.

Fashion and me don't go well together but I do my best to have shoes to suit the occasion - means some of my boots/shoes have been on the go for upwards of 20 years! (Sensible black courts, mostly)
