tempted, tempted, but cannot justify the price really. The cost of a weekend break somewhere or my car insurance!

Seem very £££ compared to say Longchamp, Osprey etc etc.

Convince me it's worth it?

Yes. But I'll never have that kind of money so it's a moot point for me.

Find me a well-made leather bag that will last for years for 5 GBP...

Alouiseg · 14/03/2010 12:05

I saw a beautiful leather Cartridge bag in a gunshop 2 weeks ago, I loved it and i want it. It was over £200. I think the craftsmanship on it was superb and the smell was heavenly.

Not exactly a designer label but an absolute beauty nevertheless.

MmeLindt · 14/03/2010 12:12

I would spend that kind of money on a bag but not on the spur of the moment.

When we were on our honeymoon in Italy I bought a The Bridge bag. It cost a lot of money but it still looks very good. We got married in 1997 so it was good value for money compared to a cheap bag that would have done one season.

faustina · 14/03/2010 15:10

well I love my mulberry bag. It's an oak bayswater and it isn't too heavy at all. I also think you should go for it if you have the money.

they do last forever and they are lovely. Mine isn't the show-offy kind either. I don't like the ones with bits of bling all over.

I also like the idea that it's well made, in england, and it's timeless, and goes with absolutely everything.

If you are the kind of person who buys one or two nice things and chooses them wisely, then I don't think it's any more of a waste than any other nice thing - a pair of expensive jeans, a leather jacket etc.

The east west is quite small if you carry alot of rubbish in your bag, like me. I would definitely go into a store and try a few before deciding.

googietheegg · 14/03/2010 15:35

It's also good to remember that the majority of celebs that carry these 'it bags' are given them for free, so it's suckers like us that actually buy them

Also, my mum was bought a mulberry bag a few years ago and she felt a bit of a wally using it in town and was 'bored' after a while, even though it was a very classic design. Just because you can use one bag for everything doesn't mean you want to!!

Fair enough Riven, but I don't live in the UK and there isn't (m)any charity shops here. I would be quite happy to scour charity shops on the search of a cast-out Hermes Birkin or Kelly from an old lady

because it will last forever

bibbitybobbityhat · 14/03/2010 19:23

I have never seen a Mulberry bag.

Of course I have actually seen a Mulberry bag, probably hundreds of them, given where I live and the jobs I have done. I have spent a lot of time in the company of eye-wateringly wealthy people, in their houses, at their film screenings, their book launches etc.

But I wouldn't know one if it hit me in the face. So don't buy one as a status symbol hoping that everyone will clock it, is all I'm saying .

Fleecy · 14/03/2010 19:56

I have a Somerset in Oak and it's gorgeous. I've had it several years and it still looks and smells beautiful. It was a 30th birthday present from DH - I choose it because it was classic and wouldn't date.

It's not heavy but it's big enough for a couple of nappies/box of wipes/change of baby clothes etc!

I wouldn't buy loads of £500 bags but I have bought another couple of Mulberry bags in the sale over the last few years, with Christmas/birthday money. It's nice to have something I never could have afforded myself iyswim.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 14/03/2010 20:03

I was tempted until I went into Jones the bootmakers last week and found a nice one for £36 (was half price). I'll save the rest and buy the odd box of chocolates and bottle of champagne!!

MmeLindt · 14/03/2010 21:29

Ha, Riven. If you only knew. Around here you pay about £500 for a bag from a charity shop.

BobtheWoodmouse · 14/03/2010 22:18

Radley have a new collection that look somewhat inspired by Mulberry but a bit cheaper:

like the 2nd one

They are nicer in real life, my friend dragged me in there on Saturday.

I love my plain oak Bayswater although is it quite heavy, looking nicely distressed now after several years.

LetThemEatCake · 14/03/2010 22:21

if you want a Mulberry but are reluctant to pay the prices, look up an ebay seller called mulberrymad or mulberrymadness (sorry not sure which) - seems to have a good rep etc

a lot of those bags look better worn-in a bit imo.

It is def. not about a label or being recognised. That's not me at all.

I just like the styles of Mulberry that's all.

I am a bit fussy where bags are concerned, but only ever have 2-3; one every day, one smaller one for evenings, and one for summer sometimes.

I have seen some Fossil ones for around £150 that are quite nice, and a Longchamp one at around £200.

I tried some of the Longchamp bags a few weeks ago and they weren't as nice as they looked on the website - the leather was stiff and a bit cheap looking. the folding ones are nice, but not as nice as my bayswater

MmeLindt · 15/03/2010 09:12

I have a Longchamp purse, that I really love. It is a good quality.

Ni I wouldn't. I have a lovely leather bag from Kookai which cost a fraction of that.

Ledodgy · 15/03/2010 09:52

*no not ni!
