DP and I have finally decided to get married, but have agreed that it will be just the two of us. He generally wears jeans and T-shirts and isn't big on dressing up very smart (linen grandad shirt and chinos as about as good as it gets!). I would like to look nice, but don't want to be overdressed in comparison iyswim. What would you suggest? Am a size 16-18 at the moment, but planning on losing a stone if poss before then. Thanks!

shhhh · 10/03/2010 19:52

imo, although you say you don't want to look "overdressed"..its your wedding dress abd you should go with a dress that you want.

shhhh · 10/03/2010 19:57

shhhh · 10/03/2010 20:00

like this very much

paulaplumpbottom · 10/03/2010 20:03

very chic

www.monsoon.co.uk
I love this and loads of others at Coast

Personally, I'd use it (and did use it) as an excuse to buy a dress for more money and more MORE than you ever would normally buy.

I got mine from www.yoox.com - was turquoise but quite wedding-y, reasonably cheap but the most I've ever spent on a dress!

shhhh · 10/03/2010 20:12

that one PPB linked to....I luurrve the back...

Adair is right, coast have lots of lovely dresses that would be suitable..

NorkilyChallenged · 10/03/2010 20:16

Wow, I was thinking of posting links to things along totally different lines...

Surprise - why don't you tell us more about what you'd like to wear, what shape you are (not just dress size) so we can judge what would suit you and what you would like?

PoppityMoppityandCottontail · 10/03/2010 21:34

I love the second one shh posted, and really love the Coast one , and think they may be a good shape rather than a shift.

But Norks is right, we need to know your shape and what you like. And your budget.

Heels or flats?
Fitted or flared?
Colours?
Where are you getting married?
What length suits you?
Which bits do you like to show, and what do you want to hide?

PoppityMoppityandCottontail · 10/03/2010 21:36

Oh and Congratulations by the way!!!

KristinaM · 10/03/2010 22:08

surprise - what is your usual style? i think you should be you but a bit more dressy IYSWIM.

eg if you only even wear jeans then you will never be happy in a strapless white prom dress and probably want to go for floaty or funky trousers plus a great top

BTW are you REALLy having just the two of you? i thought you needed witnesses? no friends of family AT ALL????

Surprise · 11/03/2010 15:04

Wow - didn't expect so many replies, thanks everyone! As far as shape is concerned, I'm 5'7 and quite large on top (size 18) and about a 16 on the bottom. Legs not too bad! Over 40, so don't really want to be showing too much flesh. A dress that I love is a Monsoon one, which is floor length and strappy, with a kind of cowel neck, but really do need more nork support, so probably a dress with wider straps would be best. I wear a lot of black, but also like deep purple, electric blue and dark green so wouldn't mind any of those colours. I never wear heels as that makes me taller than DP, so flat shoes or boots.

Some of those dresses are lovely. I think I might check out Coast next time I'm in town, but am hoping to lose a bit of weight by then.

And yes, it is just me and DP - not sure if we can haul 2 strangers in off the street as witnesses, if not it will be a couple of friends only. Reason being that I've been married before and DP doesn't like fuss. He has lost some of his family and others live in New Zealand and are quite elderly so there really is no family for him to invite, which is why we thought we'd keep it simple. We plan to have a small party a few weeks later for the DCs and invite my parents and our friends to join us.

I love the top half of this but it's probably a bit longer than I'd like. It's definitely the sort of thing I like though.

I like that Monsoon dress a lot.

Lovely but not a very wedding colour perhaps

Long sleeves, any good?

I think this is lovely

Similar but silk, maybe too dressy?

Would have to see in real life I think

Surprise · 11/03/2010 19:06

Ooh I do like some of those norkily. I think I'll have to have a good look round in RL to get some idea of what suits me best. Any other suggestions still welcome though!

bargainous

elegant

NorkilyChallenged · 11/03/2010 20:26

Ooh that Jaeger one is lovely too!

What time of year will it be? Trying to predict roughly how warm (or not) it would be. And what time of day, do you know?

fishie · 11/03/2010 20:27

surprise that purple coast one is lovely. get it. you can always wear it at party too

i had a very similar sort of wedding. and i wish i'd spent a bit more on dress because the pics would be nicer and since no actual wedding do that is all there is.

the party was fab.

get a couple of friends to do witnessing so you can all go for meal afterwards to avoid anticlimax.

We haven't made exact plans yet, but we're hoping for the beginning of June, probably late in the day so we can just go the pub for a bottle of champagne then on to our favourite restaurant. Excited already!

NorkilyChallenged · 11/03/2010 20:30

Sounds lovely.

A lot of the dresses linked would work well for the champagne/dinner bit too.

Go go go to try stuff on in Coast and Phase Eight

toomanylayers · 11/03/2010 20:39

I agree with Adair. I had a dress from Long Tall Sally, teal with cream lace over the top. It was just advertised as a summer dress.I'm a jean's and t-shirt girl and was only going to get an off the peg dress from shops others have mentioned and spend abit more than usual but luckily found this. I'm over 6' but don't dismiss it as my mil who's 5'5'' was in a LTS dress too and she looked great. (My dress was called santorini, they may still have some)

Surprise · 23/03/2010 20:19

Well, I have had a bit of a change of heart, as we will have decided to go straight from the register office to London by train. So I really don't want anything that stands out too much. What does anyone think of this dress with this cardigan? Also, as we're going to have a BBQ for friends and family a few weeks later, I'd like to be able to wear the same thing again, and I think something like this might do. Any opinions (good or bad) welcome!
