Haircuts for little boys?

I have an appointment booked for DS to have his hair cut tomorrow. He is 17 months and has not had it cut before - he has always had quite a lot of hair, from birth, though. (Some pics on profile, but no really up to date ones as my card reader is broken)

I don't have any brothers and don't know anything about boys' hairstyles etc, so what should I be asking them to do? It is a children's hairdresser's as he is so wriggly and I thought they might have more practice with wriggly children than a normal barber or hairdresser.

It would also be nice to have a few ideas of different cuts etc - do you even get different cuts for such small boys? His hair is fine, wavy and about 2 inches long at the moment. It looks nice long, but I am torn, because he hates having it washed and being longer means it takes more rinsing, so it would probably be better for him to have it shorter for now.

He is till a bit too young for a "style" I would just get his hair trimmed. You could always ask your hairdresser they will ahve done children's hair before

Jojay · 08/03/2010 14:03

My Ds is 16 months and wriggles quite a bit having his hair cut.

So the hairdresser is lucky to get it cut reasonably tidily at all, and thoughts of a style have gone out of the window.

It's probably an inch long on top and a bit shorter round the back and sides.

As long as they don't shave his head, I'd just let them get on with it. Hope it goes well

BratleyBackToNormal · 08/03/2010 14:04

Just tell them what you've said here, they should be able to offer some advice.

The first time we got DS's hair cut we went to a childrens hairdresser, he had gorgeous long blond hair and I wasn't sure if I wanted it short or not. Talked to the lady cutting it and she suggested just tidying it up for his first cut, it looked lovely, just much tidier.
Then the next hair cut we went for a couple more inches off and then 2 weeks ago we went for a proper 'boy cut' , he's all grown up now!

Just explain how you feel about washing it and that you don't want it too short or you'd like it really short and tidy or some length left to it.... however you feel, you don't need to go in and announce 'short back and sides!' or 'a number 2 all over!' just tell them you're not really sure what you want!

If they're good at what they do they'll talk it through with you first.

Good luck!

They seemed nice, when I went in.. but will never forget the comment of an ex-colleague (it is right next to where I used to work) he said "I have never heard so many screaming kids until the day they opened that place" - I am hoping it's just more that somewhere that caters to children is going to attract families with children, screaming or quiet!

So they will probably just tidy it up, that is good to know. I might be brave and get a bit extra off for the washing issue - it will grow back I suppose, just possibly not as fine.

Re wriggling - I used to feed the DSs grapes one by one to keep them still! (I used to rip the grapes almost in two because I was paranoid about choking ...!) Happy days.

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/03/2010 10:58

I like little boys with touseled, 'surf dude' hair, and think they look ridiculous with very neat, tidy hair, and even worse with crew cuts.

Unfortunately not many people seem to agree - my family are always saying DS needs a haircut. I think he looks cool.

CMOTdibbler · 09/03/2010 11:00

DS goes to a barbers - they have little boys cut, bigger boys cut (I think it's longer on top), then you get to choose. Basically a little boys cut is what they can do that makes it neat.

They give out a lolly if you behave - so DS sits very still!

WhoLetTheBuggerOut · 09/03/2010 11:01

Mine (20 month old) cries blue murder everytime we go to the hairdresser! Style is the last thing on my head . 'Short' is all I say

BratleyBackToNormal · 10/03/2010 10:06

How did the haircut go, bertie?

Did you both survive it!?

dinkystinky · 10/03/2010 10:10

When DS1 was that age I just asked them to cut it as quickly as poss and take an inch or so off all round...

NorbertDentressangle · 10/03/2010 10:13

CuppaTeaJanice -I'm with you on the 'surf dude' look.

Its just such a shame that a lot of hairdressers are pre-programmed to do either a) the 'short back and sides' or b) 'shaved head' styles and nothing else.

DS's last cut left with what was verging on a mullet because the hairdresser couldn't grasp what we wanted. I ended up taking the scissors to it myself afterwards to de-mullet it!

BratleyBackToNormal · 10/03/2010 10:20

DS has... I mean had ... the surfer dude blond mop top until a couple of weeks ago, he's still a cutie but I do miss the hair!

We went to the barber that DH goes to last time and I said 'I think its time for the 'big boy' cut ' and he said 'of course it is! boys shouldn't have long hair!'

MrsSeanBean · 10/03/2010 20:57

OP - ask for long layers and just a trim. My ds has wavy hair and although it is quite long when wet it 'springs up'. Anything too short would look horrid on ds.

If they have naturally wavy hair, keeping it long-ish and with long layers all over usually gives surfer boy look ime.

I have, on occasion had to finish off at home to counter mullet like overtones though, as another poster mentioned. Living in a provinicial town is such a trial, hair wise

mummee09v · 10/03/2010 21:27

oh god i am sooooo precious about DS's hair!!! he has the most gorgeous, thick, poker straight, dark blonde hair which i like to keep long as well, well, long-ish. he is nearly 4 and it is in kind of a long, almost 70's influenced cut. well a few weeks ago, I took him to Supercuts.
BIG mistake ...the girl was really impatient with him and kept pulling his hair about and pushing his head this way and that, it was obvious she was getting frustrated with him. in the end i said, oh that will do, as he was getting upset and so was i. it cost me £10 for his hair to be absolutely RUINED. his fringe was all jagged and basically it looked like he had done it himself. i was furious.
so the moral of my story is DO NOT GO TO SUPERCUTS IN LEICESTER!!!!! Or indeed, in general, I would imagine!!

nappyaddict · 03/04/2010 18:12

Has anyone's DS got a DS with hair that touches their shoulders or longer. If so and you don't mind putting up photos on your MN profile (or you could even put it up temporarily) could I have a nose cos I need some inspiration for DS' hair!

Strawberrycornetto · 03/04/2010 18:16

Supercuts are horrific. I had a terrible experience recently with DS. They made such a terrible fuss, really upset him and then refused to cut more than 3 snips (and I do not in any way exaggerate) before refusing to do any more on the grounds of health and safety and charging me full adult price for the privilege. I was furious.

Am really struggling to find anywhere that will cut his hair for a reasonable price without either taking nothing off at all or giving him a crew cut. He normally has slightly wavy, shaggy white blond hair and when the "good children's hairdresser" locally cut it to about half an inch all over I cried!!!!

mesobitchy · 03/04/2010 18:27

OMG mummee09- as I was reading that, I thought bet that was Leicester!

Horrible place, bad enough sitting there waiting- facing the window like an exhibit, but you then come into contact with Edward Scissorhands without the skill, just hacking crazily at hair!

I took DD about 5 years ago- good to know nothings' changed!

mesobitchy · 03/04/2010 18:29

Sorry I forgot to say, I agree with the posters saying go for the surfer look. I love longer hair on little boys!

aarghhelp · 03/04/2010 18:37

I cut my son's hair myself (22 mo). It is sort of surfer dude. His fringe is what I called "choppy" to myself. You might call it "uneven". Is that bad? I cut it with my nail scissors when he is asleep, a very little at a time, when I think it is at risk of going into his eyes.

sherby · 03/04/2010 18:47

should be some pics of DS on profile

i take him to hairdressers or barbers and just ask them to cut the fringe and tidy the back but leave the length

you have to watch to make sure they dont cut too much off

sherby · 03/04/2010 18:49

argh profile not working hang on

nappyaddict · 03/04/2010 18:55

Sherby How old is he? It doesn't seem that long in the photo - above his chin anyway?

AnzoneioBanderas · 03/04/2010 18:56

he does look like a girl a bit

sherby · 03/04/2010 18:59

that was just after he had about 2" off

AnzoneioBanderas · 03/04/2010 19:01
