Breast implants: finally decided to get them, had my consultation, now stressing about size - please advise!

After years of agonizing about whether I should do it, I have finally had a consultation and am preparing to put down my deposit. Very nervous!

My breasts are okay. I'm a size 6/8 (probably more an 8 these days), 5'3 1/2, and they're a B cup. Up until the consultation I was convinced one was smaller than the other but apparently I have spinal curvature which means I hold my body to the side. I have just always longed to have a curvier figure and have decided life is too short to deliberate for so many years on end so the decision is made.

But I'm not sure which size to go to. Would a small D be too large do you think? I just don't want to have a C and there be hardly any difference - but I also don't want huge look-at-me boobs, you know?

Any input appreciated...

If you really must then a C would be best IMHO. I'm not keen on large implants, you would have to change half your wardrobe to allow for the changed figure wouldn't you?

TrillianAstra · 01/03/2010 22:03

Don't know about boob size (when you said you were small and a size 8 I thought 'no more than a C or D') but is there yoga or ballet training or pilates or something that you could do to even out your posture? If you find it noticeable now it's possible that larger boobs will make the lopsided slouching more obvious.

TrillianAstra · 01/03/2010 22:03

PS good luck, hope it all works out smoothly.

electra · 01/03/2010 22:10

thisisxgirl - I am the same size as you and I had 345cc overs - surgeons don't work in cup sizes - was this explained to you at your consultation? My surgeon told me that women often wish they had had slightly bigger implants and to bear this in mind, but he told me that for women of our build he would not agree to do any bigger than 480cc.

The things to bear in mind are that if you have them too big, you may get averse side effects like rippling, or more serious ones like capsular contracture - which is when your body rejects the implant, but on the other hand you want to get your money's worth and actually be happy they are big enough!

Go for it - I was really pleased with mine - is one of the best things I ever did.

purplepeony · 01/03/2010 22:10

has your surgeon not advised you on this? that's the kind of input (ha) you pay for. A friend of mine had hers done- went to a DD- and she had to wear a bra with filling etc to get the idea beforehand. whatever youh ave, remember they will still sag with age and have to be re-done after about 15 years.

electra · 01/03/2010 22:13

By the way, I'm now a 30F and they don't look massive. In fact, nobody actually noticed or even asked me if I had had them done - even my parents who don't know to this day!

thisxgirl · 02/03/2010 10:35

Thank you for the comments ladies.

I emphasised to the surgeon that I wanted a natural look so he suggested 170cc - which, having since done some research, seems like it would not make a lot of difference at all.

I'm thinking maybe he thought I want barely any difference at all, whereas I DO want a significant increase but just not some monstrosities that would make everybody in a room turn around and mutter, "she's got fake boobs!"

I wear a 32 back and am very petite all over. A friend recently requested a D but her shoulders are quite a bit wider than mine...

I have a second consultation before the operation so I'll go through it again, bearing in mind that I'd rather be slightly too big than disappointingly not that different - considering the cost and the surgery implications.

Re. future upkeep and such - this was one of the biggest concerns for me but I have lifetime insurance for any complications and am prepared to have further surgery later down the line.

electra - do you mind me asking what size you were before and what size you requested?

I would go for a full C cup, and the tear drop shaped ones ie like Dita Von Teese, NOT Posh who had the high profile ones ie sticky outy obv fake ones. Alex Curran has D cups implants and said in an interview that its hard to get clothes (esp tops) that fit both her boobs and her frame, so may be worth keeping that in mind.

thisxgirl · 02/03/2010 10:59

bunny - that's funny, the surgeon did say to me, "So you don't want to look like Posh then?" when I referenced the half-melon look.

I went in there thinking I knew it all - I want teardrop shaped implants submuscular - but the surgeon changed my mind. Apparently I have enough breast tissue to go over the muscle should I wish (and over the muscle is less likely to create that gap you can sometimes have?) but most of it is underneath the breast, which a teardrop implant would only emphasise - leaving them looking very bottom heavy. So we're going round and over.

I asked for a big C at the first consultation and that's when he whapped out the 170cc implant, which seems quite small compared to the cc other people have to achieve a full C.

I haven't read all responses but......speaking as a lady who naturally inflated from a 32AA pre-DCs to a 32C post-DCs.....I would recommend a C cup. During BFing I steadied at a D cup (having gone all the way to a G during pregnancy ) and tbh, I felt uncomfortable. Felt as though they were always on show. Whereas at a C cup I feel like I have the best of both worlds. They are on show when I feel like giving a bit of cleavage but also can be "hidden" under certain types of clothing when that is my preference.

purplepeony · 02/03/2010 11:54

If you are a size 6-8 then a D cup is IMO going to look top-heavy. And obviously fake- and as my mum has DD/E cups and they a e now dowm to her waist in old age, she wishes she had B/C cups like me.

Yep, I'm concerned about looking about a blow-up doll. There seems to be a fine line between achieving a look not too disimilar from what you started with and looking like a wannabe glamour model. I just don't want to spend all that money and think, oh, that's it then?

My understanding is that generally 200cc is one cup size - although obviously very dependent upon each woman's body. So I think I will suggest 200 - 250cc. Theoretically that would make me a large C/small D.

Reality - no, fair point to make, but I would honestly love to be naturally curvier. I have a really fast metabolism (yes, that old chestnut but it's true!) and genuinely find it hard to gain weight. My mum is built like a bird and it's genetics, I assume. Even at the end of my pregnancy I was able to wear my size 8 maternity jeans with the waist fully expanded and I ate a truly shocking amount at the time. To give you an idea of what I eat here is what I ate yesterday: two crumpets with butter and jam, a beef and cheese panini, a large mocha with cream, steak and (deep-fried) chips with salad and a chocolate souffle dessert thing from M&S.

Could you go into M and S with several sizes of bra and something to stuff into them, and see what looks best in your normal clothes?

thisxgirl · 02/03/2010 12:20

You shouldn't - the grass is always greener, isn't it? I really struggle to keep the curves I have and if I become very sad or stressed and lose my appetite, I look boy-ish very quickly. I battle to keep weight on like a lot of women battle to keep it off but get equally upset and lacking in confidence. When I tried out being a vegetarian for six months size 6 clothes were baggy on me...it was disgusting. Pregnancy was the only thing that helped me gain back all the weight I lost.

I hate your sister

I just googled images of Alex Curran and her boobs look huge for a D! Just goes to show it varies so much woman to woman.

longtalljosie - I did the rice trick this morning! Read about it on the internet. Very bizarre. You fill the foot of a pair of old tights with rice (200ml = roughly 200cc) and put in a bra (I have C-cup bras from when I was pregnant). It's quite hard to guage though.

Am definitely thinking 250cc now.

pinkmook · 02/03/2010 12:26

My cousin has a very similar size frame to you by the sound of how you have described yourself and had D size implants - which she has regretted ever since as she feels the are too obviously fake. I think a large C would be better IMHO

electra · 02/03/2010 12:43

thisxgirl - before children I wore a 32D but was later told I should be wearing a 30 back size when I got measured at Bravissimo. I had mine done because after I breast fed my older girls my boobs disappeared and it was very depressing!

It's not true that you need to have teardrop shaped implants to achieve a natural look - in the case of Posh I think hers look very obvious perhaps because her surgeon didn't do a very good job, coupled with the fact that she is really too thin for her frame so the edges of the implants really show up. The reason we all notice certain boob jobs (and indeed any plastic surgery) is because they haven't been done very well. Good plastic surgery is not obvious. As I said, nobody guessed I had mine done and I had high profile implants. Don't forget that when high profile implants are inside your body and you are standing up, they will be heavier at the bottom anyway.

The most important thing is to find a surgeon you trust. I let mine guide me because I trusted him to do a good job. You should always ask to see pictures of a surgeon's work too, imo and make sure the person is a plastic surgeon, not a cosmetic surgeon.

electra · 02/03/2010 12:49

When I was doing my research I came across a computerised image thing where you could see what different sized implants would look like on your frame - I'll see if I can find it......

Feelingforty · 02/03/2010 12:51

Haven't read all the replies, but I would 100% advise you to go to M&S & try the next cup size up - ie a C & fill it up with whatever, put a tight top on & see how you look & feel.

I am now a C cup, having been a very flat AA. IIRC they are 225-250 cc.

IMHO they are too big for me - I wish I had a B. Perhaps mine are a full C, but they big & round & I am very concious of them. They are also under the muscle - which I would recommend & feel soft but firm. BTW at least 2-3 a week I wish my boobs where smaller...I had them done nearly 13 years ago..so if when we have some spare cash & I feel brave I will investigate a reduction.

Just read trhe rice thread - implanted boobs don't drop like that, they protrud roundly out of the top of your bra.

Good luck & who's doing them ?

thisxgirl · 02/03/2010 12:51

thanks electra!

OP posts:
electra · 02/03/2010 12:53

Oh, I wasn't sure of a specific size - I just wanted my boobs to look something like they had before I had children! I told the surgeon that I wanted him to do them as big as he could for them to look 'natural'.

thisxgirl · 02/03/2010 12:56

feelingforty - thank you. That's interesting that you had 225-250cc to take you to a full C...you went up three cup sizes! As I'm a B already 250cc might take me into large D territory. God, it's so confusing!

I've organised it through "mybreast" and the surgeon has been doing reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery for twenty years.

OP posts:
Feelingforty · 02/03/2010 12:59

...another consideration is your rib size, I wear a 34 & am quite broad across the ribs, so apparently I can take the full C. Sounds like you are smaller than me, so personal advice would be for smaller rather than larger.
