AArg, help me find nice clothes to breastfeed in!!

Have 4 week old ds2. I breastfed ds1 in oublic until he was 1 and never really felt happy with the clothes I had - I mostly had non-breastfeeding tops that I just sort of made work, and a few maternity tops that I kept wearing because I could feed in them easily. I breastfeed on demand so it's a constant issue!

Please help me find some nice things - I can't spend lots. I like this from frugi - www.welovefrugi.com/mother-clothes/nursing-wear/product/1377 - but that's right at the top of what I could spend. I like greys, greens, blues, and purples, and floral / boho type patterns. help help?

I bought loads of expensive nice tops but ended up in a Bravado tank which is like a camisole. I'd wear it underneath sweaters (winter) and loose wrap arounds (summer)

But they were great because they covered my tummy, so didn't feel exposed, but it didn't scream breastfeeding top!

trellism · 25/02/2010 22:59

I keep an eye out for anything that might work.

I just bought these tops:

I just wear my normal clothes plus big spanx type pants that cover my stomach when I lift my top up.

NonnoMum · 25/02/2010 23:04

There are some specialist websites with clothes designed with panels for lifting up and hoiking out your boobs.

Try mummylooksfab.co.uk or google breastfeeding clothes (UK sites) and you might find something. They aren't as cheap as chips but occasionally turn up on ebay second had.

I also had a 'breastfeeding cover' which you could strap around your neck but still look down and see the baby but would hide your belly too. (google - bebe au lait nursing covers).

Good luck.

trelis, links don't work? would love to see the tops.

ilove, I have used that approach but even with that can't always find nice flattering tops to go over that I can lift up - I don't like baggy clothes, but anything too fitted just doesn't work...

nonno thanks for the link. I've looked at quite a few sites and this is one of the better ones, but prices are still a bit steep for me - maybe will get one top! I think i'll just have to keep scouring ebay - there reall seems to be a limited choice of bfeeing clothes i think. And loads of them are maternity wear as well, which is ok for the fist few weeks but i don't want to look pregnant after that!

DC3 is now 5 months and easing up on the constant feeding so am just about ready to sell one of my Princesse Tam Tam dresses on ebay - they have been my bfing best friend, so much so that I bought in two colours, brown and purple. They;re both size 12. The buttons come down far enough for easy access, no tummy exposure, perfect!! also very forgiving on a post-natal body, not too clingy. I also just feel better if I wear a dress, even if it's just over jeans or leggings.

You might be interested in the purple. Give me a shout if so.

I like that Princess Tam Tam dress. What shade of purple is it? Also I am currently a 12-14. Would it fit? I'm 5ft 10 so also wondering whether the dress would be long enough. Sorry for the 20 questions

ladylush · 26/02/2010 09:56

That is assuming that sushistar isn't interested of course

nickytwotimes · 26/02/2010 09:58

H&M have some really good breastffeding tops. GOod prices too.

ladylush · 26/02/2010 09:58

sushistar - I tend to wear vest tops and cardigans. I also have some dresses with a cross over v neck that I can pull down when I need to feed dd. I wear a vest top underneath so I don't expose myself

IsItMeOr · 26/02/2010 10:26

sushistar - another vote here for the Bravado nursing tanktop. I have a couple and they basically turn any top into a BFing top, so you can wear your usual clothes so long as they fit over your enhanced cleavage and (in my case) post baby tummy.

I found them here for what I think is a good price. I have the frugi top in the pattern as the dress you like, and virtually live in it. They also have it on sale at the site I've linked.

LetThemEatCake · 26/02/2010 10:28

ladylush I am 5'10" too - good length on me, just above knee.

will post details later

ladylush · 26/02/2010 10:37

thanks

MummyTumble · 26/02/2010 11:32

Was going to post asking the same! Baby due by easter and all my long jumper dresses and legging are going to be no good .....so marmking my place in case of more suggestions

Does vests & cardis not get a bit boring/frumpy feeling??? Vests would be fine if we had a long hot summer...

IsItMeOr · 26/02/2010 11:40

MummyTumble - yes it does get boring/frumpy feeling, but ime your standards change when you're dealing with a baby day to day. Something practical is the best I've managed to achieve most days of the past year.

But there are others on here who are way more stylish, so I don't think it has to be that way for you!

MummyTumble · 26/02/2010 11:45

I was thinking of shirt dresses? to replace the jumper dresses? I breastfed DD for over 6 months so would like some variety....

whosinthere · 26/02/2010 13:58

www.mamaway.co.uk/

Looks good, tops and dresses.

whosinthere · 26/02/2010 13:59

sorry, try this

IsItMeOr · 26/02/2010 14:34

I've had several mamaway tops, and to be honest I haven't been too impressed with the fabrics.

WingedVictory · 26/02/2010 14:35

You didn't say whether you are very big on top, but I am and found that "feeding tops" are ridiculous, as they offer just a tiny slit, which is fine if the breast is positioned there, but no good if not (and a real faff, if you have to pull a nursing bra down over a large breast, rather than neatly folding down over a little thing).

If you have my problem, crossover tops are great, as they are fitted, but can be moved aside for access (with scarf concealing whatever necessary). Deep V necks - which flatter curvy shapes - are good, too.

Try M&S for eithef of these styles.

Bicnod · 26/02/2010 14:38

Just put stretchy shoestring vest tops from H&M underneath normal baggy-ish tops, then put baby under the baggy-ish top and pull the stretchy vest top under your boob when you feed. Worked for me (and I looked cool and hip working the layered look, naturally )

trixymalixy · 26/02/2010 14:41

Breastfeeding clothes are minging. I have been wearing one of these with a nursing bra and just wearing normal clothes on top.

Unhook nursing bra, lift top up to feed and everythign is nice and discreet and your wobbly tummy is covered and held in. Simples.

Bicnod · 26/02/2010 14:43

The other thing I had was a bump band which I used while pregnant and then afterwards to cover my tum while wearing normal tops to bf.

RoRoMummy · 26/02/2010 14:52

I wore all my usual stretchy / tshirt type tops (except button up/fitted ones) with (don't laugh!) a cami/vest underneath with two large holes cut into it for my boobies!

I went to Primark and bought an assortment of coloured cami/vest tops to cut up (didn't even bother to hem them) so that I could lift my tops up without showing my tummy off in public. I think I even had two tops exactly the same which I wore at the same time, only the one underneath was cut up.

Worked a treat and sooo much cheaper than special breastfeeding tops!
