If you used to like clothes from Next.....

..... where do you buy now?

I used to love Next clothes but the last few years I've struggled to find things I like and the quality has gone way down. Now I end up spending on girls clothes for my DD and nothing for me.

Any suggestions?

Fat face
New look (for cheap tops)
Monsoon

MunchMummy · 24/02/2010 13:27

Sorry, no help, but watching with interest as I have found the same.

I shop in Matalan , wears really well and at less than £5 for a long sleeved top I don't have to worry about by 2 preschoolers wrecking things.

undecidered · 24/02/2010 14:08

But why did you used to buy them? I have always found their clothes so drab. the only thing i ever buy from there is jewellery

NatalieJane · 24/02/2010 14:14

Next are good for jeans and socks. That's it.

8 years ago when DS1 was born nearly everything came from Next, wouldn't do it now.

Now (for kids and me, and DH) Debenhams, M&S, FatFace, Oasis, Bay trading, most pleaces actually, and for cheap fixes Boohoo.com oh and Peacocks (Don't tell anyone I said that! Things you know won't be worn very much, or things like basic plain tops for layering etc, they are really good for.

FimBOW · 24/02/2010 14:16

I bought a black winter coat for work from Next and so has half the nation its seems. You can spot Next clothes at 20 paces. They are ok for basics like plain t-shirts and jeans, never buy anything else. My dh hates Next with a passion and has not bought anything from there since the early 1990's.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 24/02/2010 14:23

Next has always had that certain look. Ive never liked it too much. I like their socks. The childrenswear is ok as long as it hasnt got the word "Next" written all over it or that it has a headless Ben 10 picture on it.
For myself I like New Look, Topshop, H&M, and River Island.

This year there's only 1 colourful, tweedy type jacket that I'm going to buy, it'll look lovely with jeans, but there's nothing else at all. It's really grim.

I shop at FatFace, Oasis, tiny bit of Boden, little boutiques, I've just discovered Soaked In Luxury clothes and bought a gorgeous waterfall cardi from them.

I really hate that 'Next black trouser suit with white shirt' look so many women seem to wear nowadays. It's everywhere.

pagwatch · 24/02/2010 14:38

I used to like Next but that was in about 1990 so I am probably not much help to you. Its been shit since about 1996.

Gap and Top shop for tee shrts and basics. Used to use H&M but the quality sucks now.
Otherwise Hobbs, Whistles,, Comptoir, Nicole Fahri, LK Bennett -[old gimmer]

mangoandlime · 24/02/2010 14:39

In the 90s the Directory was something to look forward to..it had fabric swatches and everything... Those were the days!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/02/2010 14:44

boden
fat face
white stuff
marksys

although there us something about fat face too at the mo

pagwatch · 24/02/2010 14:46

at Mango

ooh I remember the whole swatches thing. You didn't have to buy it for a while there either.

I have a full length dress from Next circa about 1988. I should do something with it. It still fits but I can't wear ironic 'vintage' - too old

LadyThompson · 24/02/2010 14:48

Yes, why was Next good in the old days? It went off in the mid-nineties. It used to have class. Now it's work wear for dental nurses and leisure wear for eating pizza at an out of town bowling alley. Horrid.

Rockbird · 24/02/2010 14:58

Nice

Monty100 · 24/02/2010 14:58

Next was lovely in the '80's. I think Hobbs might be the equivalent for work wear now but it is ££££££.

I buy from all over these days.

undecidered · 24/02/2010 15:00

I think they miss George. Anybody looked at his new givE range yet?

2old4thislark · 24/02/2010 15:02

New Look and Tesco......but then I don't need smart stuff for work.

meltedmarsbars · 24/02/2010 15:08

TKMax, but you have to really search and sometimes strike lucky, other times its like a jumble sale.

And Charity shops!

onepieceoflollipop · 24/02/2010 15:16

I noticed load of people say New Look - I am going to take their advice and have a little look for some tops.

I get plain t-shirt type tops from Asda/Sainsbury's - the sort to wear under other stuff or that preschoolers are going to wipe mucky hands down anyway.

Also the odd thing from Fatface or White stuff if not having a home day! I used to love Next. It's only been in the last 3-4 years imo that it has really gone downhill.

SuSylvester · 24/02/2010 15:49

agree re jeans and socks
although only very plain jeans
and boys unifomr

ChickenInABasket · 24/02/2010 15:51

Monsoon for work stuff
M&S Autograph, Gap, Oasis, H&M for play!
