If you used to like clothes from Next.....

..... where do you buy now?

I used to love Next clothes but the last few years I've struggled to find things I like and the quality has gone way down. Now I end up spending on girls clothes for my DD and nothing for me.

Any suggestions?

I bloody hate Next. My parents got me a voucher for Christmas that I gave in and let dd spend there last week. She is 5 and their childrens range is almost as shocking as their adult one. And 50 quid doesn't go very far either. I have never really liked them for adult clothes, but for childrens we are far more likely to go to H & M or Debenhams now

SoMuchToBits · 24/02/2010 15:58

I liked some of the stuff from Next about 10-12 years ago, but not now. I usually buy from Boden (selected items only!), M & S, Monsoon, and occasionally Laura Ashley. Quite like some of the stuff in Gap and Oasis, but it rarely fits me.

dexter73 · 24/02/2010 16:01

Shoes and boots from Next are quite good but that is really about it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/02/2010 16:06

Next jeans are excellent (not the bootcut types, the stretch skinnies). At £20 or so they are the best value on High Street.

The rest of it is vile - trainee recruitment consultant pinstripe suits etc.

For basics Tesco and Sainsbos good quality. For smart clothes French Connection and Reiss though pricy. Linea at House of Fraser for work stuff. Also Oasis and funnily enough Wallis of all places.

Agree re Peacocks - some good stuff in there.

Does anyone but anything in Matalan? It is like my gran's Kays catalogue circa 1991 in there.

GetOrfMoiLand · 24/02/2010 16:07

And George at Asda. Got some great jeggings in there the other day, look far better quality than theys hould for £12.

2old4thislark · 24/02/2010 16:19

A word of caution re New Look - if you're an, ahem, older ladylike myself you have to
'cherrypick'! You will see some very scary stuff for young people in there but there are some great tops in there.

FimBOW · 24/02/2010 16:46

Yes, New Look is a bit like T K Maxx you have to wade through the crap, until you uncover a hidden gem.

Their trousers are the only ones that fit dd (tall and skinny).

pagwatch · 24/02/2010 16:50

I liked Monsoon a while ago but its all gone a bit Per Una

KentuckyFriedPenguin · 24/02/2010 16:53

have never had any look with Next Jeans. ALays start to thin after only a few washes and get bigger without me losing weight. I have had 4 pairs that have all done the same. New :Look Hula jeans £10 - fab.

I am stuck with New Look because their clothes are the only clothes that fit me at the mo. ANd when i have to resort to the kids section their stuff isn't too kiddy. Well, not always.

2old4thislark · 24/02/2010 18:54

My daughter finds 'cheap n cheerful' work clothes in Matalan. Good for swimshorts and cargo shorts for my teenage son too.

Alouiseg · 24/02/2010 18:57

They are full of viscose these days but they also do the best leggings on the hight street imho.

Tortington · 24/02/2010 19:05

i agree next is dire, i also think Monsoon is dire this season - they have some really outragously priced and garish clothes in our local store. Boden spring catalogue makes me want to heave ( has anyone noticed the swimwear? barf!)

for a nice suit, cut well and lasting quality - i go to debenhams - its a decent price of £35-45 for a suit jacket ( you can get black trews anywhere) or Dorothy perkins do a nice range for short people ( we have shorter arms too doncha know!)

Newlook quality is total pants, but their jeans are great imo.

i am v. dissalusioned w/the high street at the mo i content myself with ebay and get better quality products, cheaper - although they maybe second hand

i am actually wearing an oustanding 'jackie O' type dress from Next ( she says ironically) hat i got off e-bay last week.

MrsMeow · 24/02/2010 19:07

All I've bought from Next in the past 3 years or so are jeans and bras for me (they fit me better than anywhere else) adjustable waist jeans for my skinny children - although George at Asda and even Primark now do adj. waist on some jeans. Oh and I have to get the yellow school polo shirts from Next as well as I haven't found anywhere else that does the right shade of yellow.

A few years ago almost all of our stuff used to be from Next, but I got fed up with the crap quality of stuff and the fact that it all seemed to be various shades of beige and peach which don't suit me at all

Now I tend to shop in New Look mainly - I also went off NL a few years ago but they do some lovely stuff in there now. Also River Island, DPs, H&M and I buy plain long sleeved tops and scarves (one of my vices ) in Primark.

ChickenInABasket · 25/02/2010 21:03

Just bought a load of spring basics in H&M today. Nice Coloured T Shirts, cardis and a skirt. Was quite surprised by the good quality of some cotton stuff but you do have to wade through some utter tat as well. Thought their kids ranges were excellent and much better quality than the adult stuff, loads of elasticated waist trendy trousers for skinny DS.

Also got A "Designers at Debenhams" suit, they had some nice stuff and loved loved Zara's spring range.

Thanks all. I've had a few things from White Stuff in the past so going to try there again plus the others you've suggested. Always thought you needed to be 12 to shop in New Look so I never go in - must investigate!

pagwatch · 02/03/2010 14:39

Oh yes to Zara.
I always forget Zara as I don't have one here

Bewler · 02/03/2010 14:39

I have a real loathing of all things Next. EVERY birthday DH and I get a stack of Next vouchers from his relatives. Its so depressing! I love vouchers and yet I find spending Next vouchers really quite traumatic. But despite all our hints, the Next vouchers keep rolling in. Bit ungrateful I know but, honestly, what I wouldn't give to be able to swap em for some John Lewis vouchers. Sigh. Sorry, random rant. I need to find a victims of Next support group...

BrassicaBabe · 02/03/2010 16:46

Next used to be my favorite shop. I remember the swatches in the Directory etc. The clothes were well made. These days they are just blah. Not too bad for work shoes though.

Quite liking White Stuff for day to day. John Lewis is my fav though. Lots of clothes shops under the same roof!

Patsy99 · 02/03/2010 18:13

If you used to like Next (what happened there?) then Zara is the obvious successor, although I don't like their children's range.

sungirltanhasanactualhairstyle · 02/03/2010 18:29

next had the mosgt hideous, boring, mumsy maternity gear in my whole city.

thought id like the babywear but i don't. you cant buy anything in there for dds that isnt barbie pink.

i quite like the runway range but on thw whole i hate next clothes with a passion. but then i would

serinBrightside · 02/03/2010 20:41

Asda
People tree (to offset Walmart!)
Boden
Cyrillus

I have never liked Next.

janeite · 02/03/2010 20:49

I don't like Next at all, at all but years ago (like 15) it used to be good for shoes and bags.

I think just about everything, everywhere is hideous at the moment but have seen a couple of things in Mint Velvet and a few in Whistles that I like (but they are much more expensive than Next).

purplepeony · 02/03/2010 22:40

Kew- not so much
Jigsaw
Boden
white company
white stuff- not much
monsoon - not a lot

Rhian82 · 02/03/2010 23:02

Where did you find a Next that stocks maternity wear?! Even the ones in Oxford/Regent Street didn't when I was pregnant.

DH used to work there so we got lots of stuff to use the discount. White Stuff is probably my favourite style of shop, but way out of my price range.
