Best shops for NOT PINK clothes for baby girl?

ChocFudgeCake · 29/01/2010 23:53

I know there are lots of mums who dislike the idea of dressing a girl only in pink. So please share your knowledge with me. I don't like princess stuff. Just comfortable, nice babywear. And not designer of course

So far (dd only 15 weeks) it's been a case of keeping an eye out for the non-pink bits of various ranges. So far have had most success with mini mode (Boots range, surprisingly good quality), Gap and Boden.

Watching this thread with interest for more tips though!

(Have actually gone as far as considering making some stuff to avoid the Katie Price pink look!)

monkeysmama · 30/01/2010 09:46

My mate has an online shop where I get loads of dd's clothes. Things like this that wash well and are stretchy and comfy and last ages.

TKMaxx is often worth a browse.

Vertbaudet is well priced and not very pink

Nordic Kids more Scandinavian kids clothes

Mini Mode and Molly & Jack sometimes have some brighter stuff for reasonable prices

Stardust kids is good for funky stuff

Oh Baby London worth a look and have frequent sales

John Lewis always worth a browse.

M&S have some really nice girls stuff in yellows, blues and reds for summer in their Indigo range.

I don't like Boden for myself but there is some really nice bright stuff for kids.

Rest I can think of are all a bit more designery but these are all good.

Trickle · 30/01/2010 09:49

TK Maxx? Have seen green and orange for newborns in there! Oh and BLUE DRESSES!

Don't know what I am having but I banned blue or pink just because I hate this trend towards a sea of either.

Have ended up with one person who is convinced I'm having a boy passing me a huge carrier of blue clothes, which I am annoyed about - there is only blue not even white so that is deliberate.

I also have two huge bags from someone who had a little girl. Don't care so much about that - not only are there lots of non-pink items the pink ones were bought for her own little girl.

The annoyed part now stupidly wants baby to be a girl - partly so I can stick two fingers up at 'blue' friend and partly because some of the dresses I have been passed are beautiful inc. a lovelly christening dress.

BooHooMonkey · 30/01/2010 09:50

H&M is often worth a look, and their stuff washes really well (Can't do links sorry)

monkeysmama · 30/01/2010 09:52

Forgot to say Zara is good though they do have some pink but lots of other colours too.

Asos' kids ranges are good and they stock Gap etc.

Jojomamanbebe is lovely. Dd has some dresses from there she had as dresses last year and wears as tops this year.

schiaparellipink · 30/01/2010 09:56

another vote for h&M here - also primark do some alright stuff for little people

4andnotout · 30/01/2010 10:03

Tk Maxx do lovely bold baby clothes, lots of Katvig for very cheap. I even bought dd4 a black dress, matching frock coat and poke bonnet from there.

BertieBotts · 30/01/2010 10:09

Yes Primark clothes are nice.

I had a boy and desparately wanted to avoid baby blue, I did get bought some stuff but I think it's rude to say you don't like it if someone has picked it out lovingly, so I just made sure I didn't buy anything blue at all and used the blue things people bought as part of an outfit with something green or yellow or orange or red etc, it wasn't overkill but I didn't offend anybody either

I refused to buy into this whole pink-blue culture. DD is 3 years old and I'm generally seen as a bit of an oddity among my friends. Not that they point and laugh, but every conversation has to have "oh yes, your dislike of pink" detour

I love H+M and Mini Mode. Lovely colours (even for boys) and nice trendy clothes. And they wash really well. Usually dd outgrows them before they have a chance to wear out.

BlameItOnTheBogey · 30/01/2010 10:31

Hooray - am so glad somebody else has asked this question. I HATE the pink/ blue thing. DD is four weeks old and has, to date, been dressed in her older brother's clothes (which are generally blue because this is what was available). Whenever I introduce her to someone ('and this is Mavis'*), they inevitably reply 'ooh and how old is he?'. I can only think that it is because we are so conditioned that blue equals boy.

*Her name obviously isn't Mavis....

nannyj · 30/01/2010 10:34

Zara is my favourite

coldtits · 30/01/2010 10:35

I saw some nice things in ASDA of all places

monkeysmama · 30/01/2010 10:42

I get asked about my son all the time (SHE is 20mo) She wears a lot of "boys" clothes because they are comfier and better for climbing, digging & general 20mo life. I was looking for a stylish winter coat that'd be good for park etc & ended up buying a boy's No Added Sugar parka which even has a longer bit over the bum which makes it great for cold swings, slides etc. I've never found anything similar for girls.

We're often complimented on dd's clothes but always with the word "alternative" thrown in. She does look stylish but I have to spend a lot longer seeking out nice but practical stuff. She's a kid who wants to roll in mud not a Barbie.

Supercherry · 30/01/2010 10:49

Next have a massive selection of girls clothes and alot of them aren't pink.

Supercherry · 30/01/2010 10:50

However, the majority of the boys stuff for under 3's have bloody monkey's on.

monkeysmama · 30/01/2010 10:54

Nothing wrong with monkeys !

Indeed, or diggers or trucks.

Skegness · 30/01/2010 10:56

monkeysmama has mentioned all my favourites already. Most of the clothes mentioned tend to be good quality ime and therefore ebay is well worth a look as they will still be going strong when babies have outgrown them.

Supercherry · 30/01/2010 10:58
Grin
Picante · 30/01/2010 11:06

Zara's got some amazing stuff - just be careful with their sizing - they tend to come up really small.

PandaEis · 30/01/2010 11:08

i tend to buy from H&M, Adams online, woolworths online, gap etc and i HATE pink so i usually buy other colours like green, orange, blue etc. you can get alot of nice, none pink clothes if you shop around

unfortunately my DD has declared her favourite colour to be pink so would rather wear that colour than any other colour!! she is the epitome of a girly girl

pinkhousesarebest · 30/01/2010 11:16

Petit Bateau and Cyrillus are hard to beat.

cupcake75 · 30/01/2010 11:46

Any of the Scandinavian ones - Polarn o Pyret, Katvig, Miny Mo, Smafolk, etc. They are pricey so I only buy when there's good sales, 2nd hand off Ebay (they are excellent quality so 2nd hand is generally really good nick), or TK Maxx generally has stuff for very cheap. H&M good as well, and I've just bought her something from the 'boy's' range as I liked the animals on it.

I'm annoyed that all the clothes with animals, especially woodland animals, is in the boys sections at shops. Plus robots - I like robots, maybe my baby girl will also like robots.

Don't know what I'm going to do if DD decides pink is her favourite colour in years to come. At least I'll have had a couple of years dressing her in purple, orange, green, red, etc.

woodyandbuzz · 30/01/2010 11:50

Just to warn you...if you take a girl out in colours other than pink, they get mistake for a boy!

I took my DD out dressed in orange and blue, she was mistaken for a boy. Another day that week, she had navy trousers, again, mistaken for a boy. She is nearly 2 and has "girl" hair. She will correct people soon - at the moment, I don't bother correcting them.

woodyandbuzz · 30/01/2010 11:51

mistaken oops

anyway, gap, tesco and boden for clothes
