Can we compile on this thread all those cheap wonder products!! My skin care regime needs work but so does my purse so would love to find some bargain stuff that works!

I once put on a M&S facemask that came in a gift pack, the ones that are about £10; and my DP said (without knowing) that my skin looked very good! That was positively shocking, unfortunatelly haven't found the stuff again. They where 3 little triangle packets in a box, and it was a green clay mask. If anyone knows which ones I mean...

Olive oil and brown sugar as a face/ body scrub.

Bucharest · 15/01/2010 11:43

I read that Atrixo hand cream is like Creme de la Mer, and Boots Age Defence cleanser is like Eve Lom's.

Unfortunately Nivea is nothing like Creme de la Mar imo.

Vitamin E oil is good as a night cream, it's only £5.50 from Holland and Barrets.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/01/2010 11:47

Oh Bio oil is fab too for smoothing out your skin tone.

But what you put on top makes a huge difference too. My skin is so much better since I switched to mineral foundation.

MarineIguana · 15/01/2010 11:51

Creme de la Mer is just ridiculously priced. I have a friend who uses it ... and yes her skin looks OK, but not £100+ a pot worth of OK!

But moving down the scale - I've used Origins Have a Nice Day for a long time and though it was the only moisturiser that wouldn't give me spots - but while pg and a bit skint have switched to Simple (their light daily moisturiser) and it's really good. Costs about £3.

MarineIguana · 15/01/2010 11:53

(I also think that Creme de la Mer's packaging looks nasty, cheapo and old-ladyish. Not that it matters really but if I was paying that much I'd want it to look sleek & stylish on my shelf!)

Bucharest · 15/01/2010 12:33

Oh, Creme de la Mer's packaging looks really cheap....have always thought that.

MumtoEliane · 15/01/2010 12:51

Olive Oil is full of vitamin E, so maybe it will do the same job as the Holland & Barrett one

MaggieMnaSneachta · 15/01/2010 12:57

that just compounds the whole emperor's clothes comparison with creme de la mer.

no way can any moisturiser do so much for your skin that it costs 125!!

SPF every day, every year, decade after decade!! i have never used expensive creams but i've always been a bit obsessed with wearing an spf everyday. finally, now that i'm forty i'm rewarded with the face of a 35 year old.

And that is all you can ever really expect from moisturisers i think. i use loreal or garnier night cremes but have also used e45 cream

Bucharest · 15/01/2010 13:12

I use mid-prices stuff (Clarins, Neal's Yard, Elemis (after a mn thread)) but when my skin is really really thirsty, nothing beats good old blue nivea out of the tin. Have also resorted to slathering Vaseline on when have no blue nivea.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 15/01/2010 13:15

THere was a thread here, a while ago which was a list of all sorts of products that were cheaper but just as good.

I've always used max factor base on my face, but lack of money has got me on to Collection 2000 and I find it just as good. Also just using MOrrisons anti wrinkle cream at abut #2.00 a pot. Feels lovely going on.

thesteelfairy · 15/01/2010 13:22

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula handcream is the best hand cream I have ever used, really does the job at this time of year. I recently was given L'Occitane Hand Cream and even that is not as good. Also tried Clarins which was really rubbish and I am huge Clarins fan.

MissMoopy · 15/01/2010 13:25

If you have dry skin YOU HAVE TO try Neutrogena Comfort Balm. It is my wonder product!!
I have tried every moisturiser and discarded almost full tubes in disgust so many times. But this is brilliant. Dry skin gone, and some of my lines/wrinkles seems lessened too. And its only a fiver, and it lasts for ages.

Cranreuch · 15/01/2010 14:09

I really like Neutrogena Norwegian Formula multi-repair cream, because my usual cream wasn't helping my mature dry skin , I am using it at night and it is lovely stuff. It is fragrance free and for extremely dry/irritated skin. It was very cheap, maybe £3, think it has money off in boots just now.

pollyblue · 15/01/2010 15:04

If your skin's suffering in this weather Astral cream is fab. Comes in various size pots, think the largest one is only about £5. It's a bit lighter and I find it absorbs more easily than Nivea and works well on face and body. Light olive oil is an excellent bosy moisturiser, I mix in some vitamin e oil sometimes too. For hands I really like Vaseline's hand cream for very dry skin, in the white tube.

tigerbear · 15/01/2010 15:09

Oil of Olay moisturiser with a small amount of tanning lotion is amazing- no streaks, very natural, and last for ages. IMO, the fastest way to looking 'alive' and glowing.

I also agree that Simple products are fab.

pollyblue · 15/01/2010 15:12

body moisturiser - oops

sh77 · 15/01/2010 15:18

Cool thread. Did anyone read the article in the Daily Mail yesterday about creme de la mer? Apparently the ingredients only cost about about 25 quid a pot. It was also compared with nivea. Nivea is much better.

SqueezyIsStartinAResolution · 15/01/2010 15:18

Aspirin face mask with milk. One is an AHA (the lactose in the milk), the other a BHA (the aspirin) so you get the ingredients of expensive products for next to nothing.

Put a few aspirin in a little bowl with a very small amount of milk (a teaspoon or two), let the aspirin soften and then mix it in. Rub it on in little circular motions then after 15 mins, rinse off in circular motions with warm water....then come back and tell us how fab your skin looks

Honestly, try it!

veryconfusedandupset · 15/01/2010 15:22

Aqueous cream will actually save you money if you shower with it - never more than £3.99 for 500gr ( cheapest is 99p in some pound shops) spread it all over, and wsh with it in the shower too, big pot lasts 3 months and after a while you don't need any body lotion and use less moisturiser and no night cream.

sh77 · 15/01/2010 18:00

What is AHA and BHA?
