So how do I get really shiny hair??

I need some recommendations before I go and blow money on shampoo that promises the world. I am a natural brunette, and I am fed up of my hair looking dull. I was very tempted by the John Freida Brunette shampoo and conditioner today but is pricey if it turns out to be shite. I need the MN wisdom to show me the way

I love Pantene.
Apparently rinsing your hair in vinegar (and then rinse again) makes it shinier.

ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 17:45

bristle brush, olive oil (eat), sport. Think it is just good heatlth and lack of all the things that damage hair - hairspray, colourants, styling foam, pollutants in the environment, hard water etc. Are you washing too often perhaps?

My Spanish friends swear by olive oil massaged into the scalp and left overnight. I would need so much shampoo to rinse it out again though, I don't think it would do any good.

thighsmadeofcheddar · 14/01/2010 17:46

My friend has gorgeous shiny black curly hair and she puts loads of almond oil into it about once a week. She swears by it.

badietbuddy · 14/01/2010 19:10

I really don't fancy trying oil tbh, as I have to wash my hair every day as it is, or the roots get greasy. The ends stay dry as anything though. In truth, I think a good start would be a haircut but I need a quick fix in the meantime. Any other miracle products out there?

I have heard that a rinse with a cup of urine every time you wash is supposed to give a fantastic shine.

Seriously. google it. It is supposed to be fab. You try it and report back cos I bloody won't

ZZZenAgain · 14/01/2010 19:16

we really have topics tongiht...

I've heard that too. Isn't it generally used as shampoo some place (think it was in south America but not 100% sure).

I'd go with the oil

MillyR · 14/01/2010 19:20

I have long brown hair. I have tried pretty much all of the main shampoos. I think Sunsilk brunette is the best, and is usually a bit cheaper than the other main brands. Hairdressers always say my hair is in really good condition (although maybe that is something they always say to everyone).

I also think Aussie 3 minute miracle is good, but not every day.

The best thing I have found for shiny hair is hedrin (the nit lotion)!

A lot of getting it really shiny is putting some kind of product on when it is dry, but I just use what ever DH has bought from the hairdressers. I used to have a serum from Tigi - think it might have been called Bedhead.

MillyR · 14/01/2010 19:24

The Tigi bedhead product is called 'After Party.' It is meant to smooth hair and make it shiny.

Bobbiewickham · 14/01/2010 19:42

Tigi also do a shine spray - can't remember the name, but it's in a pink can with a green lid. I've used it for years and it's fantastic. Get comments on how shiny my hair is. Called Shine something or other

[too lazy to run upstairs emoticon]

badietbuddy · 14/01/2010 19:45

Ooo yes I've tried Tigi stuff a few years ago, I may pop to a salon tomorrow and see what they suggest.

MillyR · 14/01/2010 19:48

Could it be called Headrush - I am looking at the Tigi website and considering buying some stuff. It is pink with a green top.

lisasimpson · 14/01/2010 19:53

I use the salon conditioner KMS of California and the brilliant brunette shampoo by John Frieda (wash twice)and it looks a lot better than it used to. It always looks better just after I have coloured it though!

Bobbiewickham · 14/01/2010 20:26

It's called headrush

Bobbiewickham · 14/01/2010 20:27

It's good for protecting your hair before you use straighteners as well.

noddyholder · 14/01/2010 20:28

Kerastase is the best shampoo for glossy bouncy looking hair I can't always justify the £ and I really notice it.My mum gave me some l'oreal elvive stuff she had bought in bulk(?)and i am using that and can really tell

squeaver · 14/01/2010 20:29

Hedrin, if my recent experience is anything to go by.

cornsilkscatholichamster · 14/01/2010 20:30

ojon restorative hair treatment from QVC

MillyR · 14/01/2010 20:36

Squeaver - I am glad it isn't just me. It is also great for getting all of the knots out of DD's hair.

DunderMifflin · 14/01/2010 20:54

I also like Sunsilk Brunette MillyR but I can't seem to find it anymore - have you seen it in the shops recently?

I hate those heavy, sticky kinds of shampoos (like Herbal Essence) - Sunsilk is cheap and makes my hair really shiny so I'd love to find it again!

MillyR · 14/01/2010 21:12

Asda are doing it for £1 a bottle and it is on 4 for 3. I don't know why some shops have stopped doing it. It doesn't seem to be in Tesco anymore.

I hope they are not discontinuing it - if so I will have to panic buy.

DunderMifflin · 14/01/2010 21:14

I'm going to get me down to Asda and panic buy away, thanks!!

Maize · 14/01/2010 22:32

I think some of having shiny hair is your hair type. I have straight, dark brown hair and that type of hair is naturally shiny.

I am another huge Sunsilk fan, makes my hair lovely and smells yummy. It is harder to find at the moment isn't it However I bought some in Asda and Morrisons recently so it is around.

I also use Paul Mitchell Sleek and Shiny shampoo sometimes and its very good, it is expensive but it lasts for ages.

I also use Pantene sleek and shiny 2 in 1 when I am in a hurry.

GHDs also help and shine spray.

handbagsandgladrags · 15/01/2010 17:43

I've been using Sebastian hair products for a while now & really like them. I have long, straight, very fine hair, which has a tendancy to be fly away & brittle. But these products seem to have helped.

However, THE best thing for shine IMO is my Imetec Nutri Heat hairdryer. It truly is fab! I managed to get hold of one in TKMaxx about a year ago for £18 (they're about £35 elsewhere). It really does make my hair very shiney & i no longer need to use my GHDs either so a double bonus !

To tame those little pesky 'fly away' bits i use a smoothing serum - just bought a new one from Superdrug from a range called Samy. So far so good.....

bronze · 15/01/2010 17:50

Cold water rinse

JeremyVile · 15/01/2010 17:52

Rinse for ages.
Final rinse with cold water.
Finsh blowing drying on cold setting.
Bit of shine spray or serum.
