So how do I get really shiny hair??

I need some recommendations before I go and blow money on shampoo that promises the world. I am a natural brunette, and I am fed up of my hair looking dull. I was very tempted by the John Freida Brunette shampoo and conditioner today but is pricey if it turns out to be shite. I need the MN wisdom to show me the way

J Freida Liquid Shine is really good. Or dye your hair, it always makes mine shiny

wash your hair well, always use a conditioner - even on the ends if your roots are greasy.

use a cold rinse of water at the end of shower - tis supposed to flatten the cuticles on the hair so it reflects more light.

don't tip all your hair on top of your head in a turban, likewise don't scrub your wet hair with a towel - this will encourage knots and tangles.

comb carefully and slowly when wet with a wide-toothed comb, not a brush. spend money on a good comb that doesn't snag. if you have long hair get a paddle brush.

don't brush your hair roughly, or too much, avoid hairdryers and straighteners. avoid harsh colourants.

i sometimes use john frieda brilliant brunette and i find it absolutely fantastic, i buy it for special occasions. its a bit cheaper recently in tesco, and boots always have offers on shampoo. the rest of the time i mix it up with different brands but always condition my hair.

finally, for frizz, john frieda's frizz ease is amazing and has won many awards and topped serum sales. be careful though, only use a tiny amount.

John Frieda is lovely and well worth it- I get compliments every day about my shiny hair but also have hair coloured with Aveda products which are nayural.

Glis by Corimist shine spray.

NAKED hair treatment masque (currently £4 instead of about a tenner in Boots) are good.

Moroccan Oil for hair is just bloody fab.

My hair dresser first used it a couple of months ago and I was really impressed. You just put a tiny smidgen on your hand, rub your hands together and then run them through your hair. I also do the same just before I straighten it. It smooths, gives a lovely sheen (without greasiness) and makes my hair "swing".

My parents came to stay on christmas eves day (my hair did need washing but I wanted to wait until christmas morning). I came downstairs after I had done it and my mum accused me of actually spraying some sort of gold sheen all my hair (I do have blondey gold highlights). She instantly asked what I had done to it - it looked so nice. When my SIL and DB turned up, the first thing SIL commented on was my hair.

I paid £30 for it at the hairdressers, but it seems to be on offer on the website.

Would highly recommend.

I use Elvive shampoo and then a Paul Mitchell conditioner.

I also try not to use styling products every day or and leave my hair to dry naturally most days.

I think dark hair can look naturally shiny anyway.

bellavita can you tell me the ingredients of the oil?
I'm just about to start the curly girl lo/no-poo thingy, and it might be a good treatment.

(sorry for slight hijack OP, if you have curly hair though, no-poo might be worth a go)

bellavita · 16/01/2010 09:26

Poppity

The ingredients are

Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Butylphenyl, Methylpropional, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (Argan Oil) Linum Usilatissimm (Linseed) Extract, Parfum, CI 47000, CI 26100, Coumarin, Benzyl Benzoate, Alpha-isomethyl Ionane.

Hope this makes sense to you!

Poppity · 16/01/2010 12:40

Thanks so much, it does have some silicones in, so no good for me!

I have dark hair and as a final rinse I use water that has been steeped in rosemary and a dash of apple cider vinegar. What you get when you do that is the most amazing shine and bounce. better than using chemical spays and conditioners any day.

triffictits · 18/01/2010 13:21

Bella my hairdresser used the Morrocan Oil on my hair last time I went. I loved it and am going to by some next week when I go again.

mamazon · 18/01/2010 13:24

use any old shampoo and a conditioner designed for added shine. wash you hair as usual, ut the conditioner on and leave it for a good 2 or 3 minutes. then rinse with COLD WATER.

its a bugger at first but when you do it every other day like i do you get used to it.

I am always complimented on having shiny hair

CountessDracula · 18/01/2010 13:34

I find macadamia oil does the trick every time
