What is everyone's wardrobe like?

Following on from the 'frugal' thread where we are all going to try to make more use of what we already have...?

What sort of wardrobe do you have and how do you organise your stuff?

Personally I get on well with drawers, but I love 'shallow' (not much room between).

I have a double floor to ceiling height fitted wardrobe plus one separate chest of drawers. I hang lots of stuff, stack shoe boxes underneath and have several shelves for accessories - scarves / hats / belts / gloves etc. T-shirts/ vests/ underwear / thick jumpers are stored in the chest of drawers.

I have 1 small wardrobe and 3 chest of drawers (one is mainly full of shoes and belts), wardrobe contains dresses, shirts (things i don't often wear) and jeans), one chest of draws contains tops, pjs and skirts and the other (small chest) is for underwear).

I have far too much clothes yet i live in jeans or leggings and in this weather a hoody .

Bonsoir · 10/01/2010 10:55

There are two quite large built-in cupboards in the hall outside our bedroom, one for DP and one for me, with a hanging rail right across their width and shelves above. I keep all my clothes in current use except for coats hanging on my rail. The only clothes I fold are underwear and socks/tights, and they are in one drawer in my room. If my rail gets too full, I declutter and remove to a bin bag.

There is a huge walk-in wardrobe at the end of the hall that I currently use for storing suitcases, linen, various miscellany and that DP uses for his non-seasonal clothes (his clothes take up a lot more space than mine) and for the boys. I sometimes think of rearranging this and making it into my own dressing room. But I also like the discipline of only have one cupboard.

MissWooWoo · 10/01/2010 11:16

It's nice to hear that your jeggings are hung up Bonsoir

MrsBadger · 10/01/2010 11:23

mostly shelves for me - I have a 4-door Ikea wardrobe of which 3/4 is shelves and/or baskets (for socks, underwear etc) and only one hanging section for skirts and dresses
but in a previous life I worked in a branch of Benetton so I am a champion folder and everything is neatly in square stacks.

Also holds luggage, dh's out-of-season stuff, shoes, scrap bag etc - in fact apart from my bedside cabinet it is my only bedroom storage.

bronze · 10/01/2010 11:32

One small wardrobe, a drawer in the chest of drawers and a drawer under the bed. Underwear going in the bedside table. Its squashed but probably a good thing I buy about 2 new items of clothes a year.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/01/2010 11:33

I have a room. My Dh put up swinging gate type rails and lower rails that go around the wall of the room for skirts and trousers. There is also a matching vanity. I have a wardrobe in the room where I keep my shoes racks. The shoes I have boxes for go in a small roof space thats just off the room.

dexter73 · 10/01/2010 14:25

I have a wardobe with a rail and then shelves underneath. It is quite lucky that it is small as it limits how many clothes I can buy!

MarthaFarquhar · 10/01/2010 14:30

this is a bone of contention in our house!
We share a wardrobe and chest of drawer, and it's nowhere near enough room. everything gets creased and we forget what we've got.
I had finally persuaded DH to get some IKEA pax wardrobes fitted, but the plumbing has gone kaput, so the wardrobes will have to wait until we've saved up again .

monkeysmama · 10/01/2010 14:32

Dp and I share a room but I think it is badly organised so am following this thread with interest.

We have one built in wardrobe which gives us 2 deep shelves each and 2 hanging rails each (one above other). I also have a freestanding rail for longer jumpers and dresses which don't fit in the fitted wardrobe. Underwear and pjs go in the chest of draws in our room. I use a shoe thing for belts and scarves but they spill out all the time and even though I seem to rearrange my clothes every few weeks I always wear the same things. They are currently organised by colour.

MrsB when I was a kid I used to "play Benetton" with my sisters. I even remember rolling up and colouring in pieces of paper to look like cigarettes so we could be more like the glamourous shop assistants . I think maybe we spent too much time in shops in Italy.

NomDePlume · 10/01/2010 14:58

Wellllll. This is a bit of a bone of contention chez NDP actually. I was just about to make the spare room (next to our room) into a dressing room but DH has vetoed it. Grrrrrrr. At the mo we have in our room...

Triple wardrobe - hanging rail x 2, shelf at top, drawer at bottom
Triple wardrobe - hanging rail x 2, shelf at top, drawer at bottom
Chest of 3 drawers
Chest of 3 drawers
Chest of 3 drawers
Small bedside sized chest of 2 drawers

They are split thus

Triple wardrobe 1

Wide section - My clothes and some shoes
Narrow section - DH's work suits

Triple Wardrobe 2

Wide section - DH's normal clothes
Narrow section - DH's work shirts

Chest 1 - DH

Top - Underwear
Middle - PJ botoms & t-shirts
Bottom - t-shirts

Chest 2 - DH

Top - t-shirts
Middle - jeans
Bottom - shorts

Chest 3 - Me

Top - bras, tights, socks
Middle - t-shirt type tops
Bottom - PJs/leggings/'yoga' trousers

Small Chest_ - Me

Top - Costume jewellery / bangles etc.
Bottom - Knickers

We are still running out of room

Thankfully we have a big bedroom so it doesn't look like a bedroom furniture warehouse (though it reads like one!)

norksinmywaistband · 10/01/2010 15:07

I reorganised mine this am - as realised I had all my stuff still crammed into half the space since H moved out.

I have 6 drawer chest of drawers ans a large built in cuboard but no hanging space.

drawer 1 - make up and jewellry
drawer 2 - Bras/ swimming costumes
drawer 3 - Knickers
drawer 4- socks/tights/scarves
drawer 5 - nightwear
drawer 6 - sports kit

then folded into piles in the cupboard
short sleeve t-shirts
long sleeve t-shirts
jeans/ trousers
cardigans
jumpers
going out tops
dresses
And at the back in similar piles are all my summer clothes, ready to be rotated to the front if the weather ever improves

Very oddly proud of my newly organised wardrobe

Earthymama · 10/01/2010 15:20

We have too many clothes
However, we have a beautiful wardrobe!
It's a 1930s french style wardrobe with two doors, cream in colour, with ornate gold decoration. Inside 2\3 rds of the space is taken up with a rail at the top and shoe racks at the bottom. The other third is a small shelf at the top, 4 cupboards with glass doors labelled underwear, shirts etc and then 2 small drawers at the bottom. We ignore the instructions sadly and use these to store our gardening/decorating clothes.
The hanging space is shared.
We have a beautiful dressing table that matches the wardrobe, I use this for jewellry and toiletries.
In addition we have a armoire with hanging space for jumpers and tops, and 2 drawers for more tops. In addition, we have a matching chest of drawers one drawer each for undies, third for socks and bottom two for nightwear and thermal undies.
Our coats and bulky jackets are in another room as are our shoes.
I want to build a huge fitted cupboard in the back room but DP takes lots of persuading!!

bronze · 10/01/2010 15:22

so whose dh has more space than them?

MrsSeanBean · 10/01/2010 15:26

Deviating slightly, but how many pairs of knickers and bras does everyone have? I think I have too many. I haven't done an exact count, but those in the bottom and at back of drawer don't see the light of day very often, I just rotate those on the surface.

Also, does anyone else keep new knickers on standby 'just in case'? (Just in case of what exactly I am unsure! )

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 10/01/2010 15:27

mine does. He has 4/6 of the wardrobe space whereas I have 2/6. He has 6 out of 9 of the large drawers, I have the remaining 3. I do have the 2 small drawers but they are really dinky and even with those he still has waaaaaaaaay more than me

NomDePlume · 10/01/2010 15:31

MrsSB, I have about 12 bras, about 7 of those are every day ones. I'm a funny bra size that means I can't buy the cheap and cheerful type so at £27 a pop I don't have loads. Plus I find one particular brand and style really comfortable and flattering so after years of shoehorning myself into too small bras that are pretty or sexy or cheap but uncomfortable, poorly fitting I have learned my lesson!

Pants-wise I have about 20 pairs. Some sexy, some not so sexy. Some control type ones, some 'period emergency pants'.

MrsSeanBean · 10/01/2010 15:33

Ha! My dh has a whole huge separate wardrobe in the spare room which has virtually become his dressing room. He also has a huge chest of drawers. He uses space less well crams -less-- stuff in than I do though as everything is organised neatly and laid out with the usual military precision.

OP posts:
MrsSeanBean · 10/01/2010 15:36

I have way more than 20 pairs of knickers. (mainly plain M&S types), know that without even counting. I suppose I hang on to old ones for period emergency reasons too

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 10/01/2010 15:38

there's no point in ruining perfectly nice pants though with period leakage is there ?

(bets there's no pervs reading this thread anymore if there were any attracted by MrsSB's original q)

Bonsoir · 10/01/2010 15:42

I have four bras and nine pairs of knickers . Like everything else, I like to have few and use them intensively and replace them when worn out.

MrsSeanBean · 10/01/2010 15:56

Oh Bonsoir, you are so sensible/ organised! I wish I could be like that. What do you do though if you've totally worn something out and can't find a suitable replacement?

Do you (a) delay replacing it, or (b) just buy something which will 'do' for now?

I live in fear of being caught in an (a) position and hate doing (b) so maybe I hoard to combat those fears.

OP posts:
Bonsoir · 10/01/2010 16:03

To be fair, I live in a city with a lot of shops! So no need to stockpile anything at all. If I lived somewhere more remote I might feel the need to have more stocks.

MrsSeanBean · 10/01/2010 16:05

Yes; sadly I live in the back of beyond. It must be luxury to live in striking distance of Liberty or Harvey Nichols etc, or even better, Chanel

OP posts:
Swedington · 10/01/2010 16:14

Interesting all of this. Thank you all for sharing.

Can I ask you all something. What do you think about underwear "sets"? I seem to have a bit of a bonkers relationship with them in that I like them and buy them but get less wear out of them than bra and knicker separates.

Bonsoir · 10/01/2010 16:18

I always wear matching bra and knickers. DD tells me off roundly if I ever dare not. She always wears matching vests and knickers herself .
